Fans rally to help Nathan Bain, hero of Stephen F. Austin’s upset of Duke

Nathan Bain was the hero of Stephen F. Austin’s upset of Duke, and he needs your help.

Bain is a native of Freeport, Bahamas, which was hit hard by Hurricane Dorian earlier this year. Bain’s father is a minister and his church was nearly destroyed by the storm, as was his family’s home. After he made a layup at the buzzer to beat No. 1 Duke at home — the biggest upset in college basketball in 15 years — Bain struggled to keep his emotions in check in the postgame interview.

Stephen F. Austin’s compliance office set up a GoFundMe for Bain and his family earlier this year. Before last night’s win, it had raised just over $2,000. This morning, it’s over $33,000, with donations flying in from fans who want to help the guy that took the Blue Devils down. The comments are priceless:

Go Heels

You beat those clowns. It’s the least I could do.

Happy Thanksgiving from UConn Nation

You blew up the Death Star tonight, Nate!

Thank you Sincerely, America

Thank you for taking the heat off us in Lexington. Prayers for your family.

A great story just got even better. Sports, man.

Can you imagine if talented teams put that kind of effort in every game. Another great upset. The only bad thing about dukes loss is louisville is going to be #1. Makes th uk louisville game crazy good if they stay there. Go Cats

Hilarious Duke fan post. Sounds vaguely familiar, but he really did hose it up last night!

I have to say reading the comments from the donations, the Duke fan base has a good demeanor after losing to them. Alot of the donations are from Duke alums and they seem to have taken it well. I hate Duke, but have to give them credit! Good sportsmanship is rare these days. Even seen Jay Williams donated $500 to the family. Some things are bigger than sports and its pretty cool to see all the fan bases of college ball coming together to help out people in need. Very inspiring!

They definitely handled it much better than a lot of our fans, I didn’t see one comment saying fire K.
