Fan says Willie’s blond hair is was bad for the program

IMG_0908

Last night, you surely noticed that Willie Cauley-Stein’s hair is no longer blond.  In true BBN manner, Willie’s hair has been a major topic of debate over the past month, and one fan felt so passionately about it that he wrote a letter to the editor of the Herald-Leader.  Check out Jack Frost’s impassioned plea for a “clean cut” program above, in which he argues that Calipari needs to stop recruiting players who “are only interested in getting to the NBA or drawing attention to themselves,” and end the “freak show on the basketball court.”

Hopefully Jack is a little happier now that Willie’s hair is back to normal.

I know I’m going against the grain here, but I agree with Jack Frost’s comments. My college coach (and it wasn’t in the 1950’s – more like 2000’s) said that college basketball was like a business. You conduct yourself like a professional, because that is what you want to get to – the next step. I’m not sure businesses today want to hire people with bleach blonde hair and a Kid-N-Play haircut. Now before all you hipsters start commenting on how too old fashion I am, or welcoming me to the modern world, there is a point about looking and acting professional. I currently work in the marketing industry, so I know the “creative” types, but I can guarantee you if someone shows up to an interview in “whatever they feel like wearing/looking like”, they won’t get the job. I’m not saying you can’t be a “free spirit”, but you should go about your business as a professional.

Yeah, but the business these guys are entering is the NBA, where outlandish haircuts are not at all abnormal and tattoos are all but part of the uniform. Nothing Cauley-Stein has done is the least bit “unprofessional” if it’s professional basketball we’re talking about.

Except that, in the NBA (the hopeful “next step”), they don’t hire/draft players based on their hair color. Meanwhile, there will be many “clean-cut” (whatever that means) players that won’t get a sniff at the professional basketball level.

      12:03 pm January 9, 2014 Permalink

He’s a basketball player. His business uniform consists of a blue/white tanktop, clown shorts, tube socks, and high tops. If anything, off the court, Willie is one of the sharpest dressers on the team. If WCS’s actual behavior on or off the court has disrespected my University, team, or BBN, I have yet to see it. I judge my Kentucky Wildcats by the content of their character, not their physical appearance.

    • DH
      12:12 pm January 9, 2014 Permalink

I don’t disagree with you about not going to a job interview looking like that. That’s the company’s first impression of you. However, playing college basketball is Willie’s interview. The NBA cares more about your size and talent. They don’t care about your hair or your ink if you can play. If JR Smith and Dennis Rodman can stay in the league with all their tats and crazy hair to go with their attitudes both on and off the court, I’m sure they’re not overly concerned with Willie being eccentric. Especially since he’s never been known to have a bad attitude. I know some coaches like to run their programs like the military, but that doesn’t work at a “players first” program

    • Retiredbballplayer
      1:45 pm January 9, 2014 Permalink

Valid points, ladies and gentlemen, about WCS not being in the normal business atmosphere – his business attire is jersey, shorts, etc…I guess for me this goes back even further to, instead of comparing WCS to Birdman or JR Smith, maybe basketball is moving in the wrong direction by letting players dress that way??? And let me stop some of you right there…yes, please put the worn-out “race” card back in your pocket. This has nothing to do with race. I’m just saying that personally, I don’t like watching players with 50 tattoos and died hair trying to get attention for themselves. Let your game do your talking. If anyone thinks I’m too old fashion, that’s fine, I can be called a 27 year old fart. But I CAN relate to Jack Frost – and it’s just his opinion, like mine – that he doesn’t like seeing these players who try to stick out (stick out not by performance, but by fashion on the court). And possibly having a coach that regulates his players appearance on the court isn’t the worst thing in the world. Again, just his and my opinion – so he shouldn’t get all this negative feedback for his opinion.

Is it not similar to David Stern’s action to make players who are injured or sitting out games to wear “business” clothes? Rather than the old A.I. days of wearing a bandana, oversized jersey and jeans? (I can see that worn-out card getting pulled out again on this comment).

Anyway – those are some interesting points I thought about. Of course, would love to hear some feedback.

      Go Cayts! (you’re welcome Elwood)

      Here’s the thing.

When I own my business, I will hire those most qualified to do the best job, regardless of hair color, tattoos, style of dress, etc.

      Why?

Because I’m a decent human being. Also because WHY WOULDN’T YOU HIRE THE BEST POSSIBLE CANDIDATE REGARDLESS OF HAIR COLOR, TATTOOS, STYLE OF DRESS, ETC?

To do otherwise is to continue living in a world where stuff like that means you’re a lower class than someone clean cut. That’s just not true.

Isaac – I’m not saying to take away his scholarship. But image plays a factor. No one was busting John Wall’s balls when he said he wasn’t going to get tattoos because he wanted to be more marketable, were they? Did anyone come out of the woodwork and say that he was an indecent human being for saying that? No. I’m going to stop you right there, because yes, I know he got tatted up and that is no longer viable, but when he originally made that statement, he had a point. Whether you want to admit it or not, a first impression is a lot about your visible image.

Twocoach – c’mon guy, read my comment. I said that I acknowledge that tats and strange hair (i.e. Birdman and JR Smith) are in the NBA, but maybe we should go a little bit further and question why that has happened. Also, I wanted someone’s opinion on why David Stern implemented the rule of wearing a collared shirt, etc. – instead of baggy jeans and throwback jerseys if you are sitting out in street clothes. Any comments on that?

Your point about Rupp looking more like a ghetto is offensive and idiotic to me more than racist. Just because kids today don’t dress like you or how you want to…or just because they have their hair etc etc different doesn’t make Rupp a ghetto. Many will think you are racist because you make it sound as though the color of the skin is defining of a ghetto. Maybe that is how you feel and thus the attempted save in your comment. I can imagine telling my di in basic training “this is a free society and I should be allowed to express myself in whatever manner I desire”. he would have made it painfully clear that I left that democratic society for the duration when I raised my hand and took the oath.

Joining a basketball team, no matter how prestigious, is not the same as joining the military. But I will agree with the sentiment regarding the military. When you join up, you are expected to conform.

And the basketball is ALLOWED to put whatever rules regarding clothes, hair, etc… in place that they want. They just recognize that it has no effect on the play of the basketball team and that it would hinder the fun of the players and possibly affect future recruiting. It’s called REALITY.

WCS’s hair color made zero difference to the team. A fans failure to enjoy WCS’s hair style has zero effect on the team. If you care enough to not buy a ticket then someone else will. You, as a fan, are replaceable. WCS is not. Sorry.

Some of you have tunnel vision. Do you recall our attitude about Cal at Memphis and the “thugs” he recruited. Of course we were wrong but that is the same perception people will start to have about UK. Right or wrong is irrelevant. Our perception will change if this trend continues. If this is isolated then it is way overblown.

    • twocoach

Fans will make up any stupid reason to bash a rival program. It doesn’t mean that the general public has that opinion about them. People that weren’t rivals of Memphis didn’t share that same opinion of Cal and his teams at Memphis.

The perception of MOST UK fans about Cal’s teams at Memphrica were that they were THUGS and very undisciplined ………….. couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn from the free throw line and last but not least ……… we held him in the same regard as we held Bobby Knight ……….. we could beat him !

A player first program lets its players color their hair and tattoo their arms. It lets, no encourages them to stretch as individuals. It also asks them to dedicate themselves to improving their game and their team mentality. Willie does all of these things. He is exemplary. Oh, and I loved his blond hair.

WCS is a free spirit obviously? If Jack Frost can’t see that He probably is a one side-minded guy who dosent understand the term “kids will be kids”… At least WCS isn’t poppin’ pain pills like another forward we all know that’s down in Texas play rehab basketball… That’s a fact JACK!! – the words of the great Si Robinson- ( duck dynasty) for you who live under a rock.

I moved to Naples Fl and I have met a lot of Wildcat fans here and we meet up at Johnny Malloys to watch all the games. So many fans in Gator Country it’s awesome!!

Unless the players start playing games in suits and ties, people can just shut it about their hairstyles not being “professional.”

Just as a note, I do not believe that there has every been a generation of people in their 60s-70s that has EVER liked the styles of people in their 20s. Folks that age in the 1950s thought the 20 year olds and their hair styles were unprofessional. Same in the 60s. Same in the 70s.

Just a reminder that 20 year old kids AREN’T PROFESSIONALS. They are KIDS.

Yall just wanna hate on a KID. Grow up. As far as davod stern making them wear buisness suits… That’s for the birds. Because everyone knows if you can ball for a team they’re not gna give two shh what color your hair is. Helping the franchise is all that matters. Let lebron wear hos hair a different colr n see if the heat tell him to change it or sit out games. Get outta here.
