Nine days in the Bahamas is about all John Calipari and his team could take. It was a blast, a great team bonding experience with a ton of basketball, but he and his guys are ready to head home. The team left the gym following today’s loss to go straight to the airport for a flight that will have them in Lexington before their Sunday night shows come on. Cal joked that he had his bags packed for two days; he’s had enough here on the island.
Coach Cal isn’t the only one ready to get home, either. The entire staff is worn out and the players too. Alex Poythress was so gassed today the coaches told him to rest. Poythress went extremely hard for five games and asking for a sixth at full speed wasn’t worth it.
“The win would’ve been nice,” Cal said in the press conference. “But in the end, this may have been the best thing.”
The loss will hopefully keep the team hungry and humble after hearing how good they are all week. Playing two tight games to close the trip brought them back down to earth a little bit following the demolishing of their opponents in the first four.
Now, we wait until Big Blue Madness for the excitement to build back up.
