Everyone is exhausted and ready to get on home

Nine days in the Bahamas is about all John Calipari and his team could take. It was a blast, a great team bonding experience with a ton of basketball, but he and his guys are ready to head home. The team left the gym following today’s loss to go straight to the airport for a flight that will have them in Lexington before their Sunday night shows come on. Cal joked that he had his bags packed for two days; he’s had enough here on the island.

Coach Cal isn’t the only one ready to get home, either. The entire staff is worn out and the players too. Alex Poythress was so gassed today the coaches told him to rest. Poythress went extremely hard for five games and asking for a sixth at full speed wasn’t worth it.

“The win would’ve been nice,” Cal said in the press conference. “But in the end, this may have been the best thing.”

The loss will hopefully keep the team hungry and humble after hearing how good they are all week. Playing two tight games to close the trip brought them back down to earth a little bit following the demolishing of their opponents in the first four.

Now, we wait until Big Blue Madness for the excitement to build back up.

I can’t imagine any TRUE Kentucky fan feeling a 1-pt loss is bad thing for this team…especially when it doesn’t even count. I, for one, actually feel the way this 6 game tour went was 100% EXACTLY what this team needed ; they got a taste of everything they could possibly face this season (well, minus a blowout loss…which ain’t happenin’). My hope is that this loss matters enough to this team, that it has the same impact that the Vanderbilt/SEC Tourney loss had in 2011-12. With this group, an undefeated season is definitely possible.

Agree. The only thing that concerned me about this trip was someone would get sick of injured. Alex looked really worn out, but as far as I could tell he wasn’t throwing up. Hope they all get home safely and make it class on time. May Godspeed.
