ESPN picks Pitino over Calipari as head coach of college basketball dream team

ESPN’s stirring the pot today with a controversial selection that should get everyone in the Bluegrass talking. Myron Medcalf picked his “perfect college basketball team” for the upcoming season, and not only did he not select any Kentucky players, he chose Louisville’s Rick Pitino over John Calipari as the head coach. Don’t worry, he’s not totally insane; Medcalf chose Cal to be an assistant coach, along with Michigan’s John Beilein and Villanova’s Jay Wright.

Why Pitino over Cal? Medcalf argues Pitino would best “manage egos and build a variety of personalities into a motivated and competitive vessel.” Funny, seems to me that Calipari does that better than any coach in the sport and he’s got practically a new roster every year.

Even though Cal and Pitino hate each other, Medcalf believes they’d be the “perfect coaching combination.”

“Yes, Calipari under Pitino,” Medcalf writes. “Could you imagine? We can. The two would comprise the perfect coaching combination. Pitino’s defensive strategy with Calipari’s fluid offensive approach would make this group a monster against any opposing all-star cast.”

Talk about a pair of egos to manage. Click on the link below to see the 10 players Medcalf selected for his dream team. Spoiler: there are only three freshman, and none of them are going to Kentucky. See that, Kevin Knox? That’s what we call bulletin board material.

The ability to hire coaches that will hire prostitutes is an often overlooked quality in a head basketball coach…

I honestly believe Medcalf has shit for brains. Like when he was younger they did a science experiment where they replaced what was a fully functioning brain with bull shit.

I could understand that logic if he said that Pitino was a better game manager while Cal was better at uniting a team and getting top tier talent to work together.

There are two groups of fans that are probably the only ones paying attention to college basketball right now. His job is to get the attention of both. He did, nothing more.

For all the hype the dribble-drive system and free flowing offenses get, Cal has consistently been one of the best defensive coaches in the league. Other than the 2013, 2014 and 2016 teams (Nerlens, Harrisons’ Freshman year, and Ulis), we’ve been ranked top 20 in the KenPom adjusted defense every year since Cal has been here. And look where Memphis was while he was there, they were a top 10 defense every year from 2006-2009.

All that to say Cal’s defensive prowess is on par with anyone’s in the country.

I agree. I kinda feel like he’s got it backwards. Go with cal’s D and pitino’s offense

Metcalf writes “We’re looking for an elite group of players we believe would jell together.”

Then he puts Grayson Allen on the team. Any half decent human being would not want to play with him.

Honestly I think pitino is a better Xs and Os coach, which would likely be the big reason why. Cal is vastly superior recruiter and at quick player development, but if you’re looking st just one season, unless Cal recruiting for the next season and # of draft picks is a big factor in this consideration, the pick makes sense. Tubby was a great XO guy as well.

Pitino is a lowlife turd who promotes mistreatment of women. He supports child prostitution, abortion and rape.

Exactly. Mule and the carrot. ESPN needs ratings, so they prod UK fans with an imaginary sentiment against their basketball prowess. Job well done to ESPN. Sad that their best option is the troll job. That’s journalism for ya, right there.

Boycott ESPN – it’s a failing company that fired most of their really good reporters so we get this guy and his obvious ploy to get more hits on the web site – don’t do it – don’t click onto ESPN.

I would agree, put aside all the kaoz and tribulations of Rick P. He’s a great coach, I can’t and I won’t allow that to impair my judgement when it comes to his coaching skills.

You guys, Medcalf is merely trolling the BBN. A starting five that includes a returning UNC guy, Bamba, and Grayson Allen? As if the Pitino pick wasn’t clear enough.

Don’t fall for it. (You’ve fallen for it.)

Of course. Slow news time, rile up BBN. Like clockwork. Don’t help pay this guys contract folks.
