ESPN is reporting that John Higgins received death threats from Kentucky fans

Turns out Kentucky fans’ outrage at referee John Higgins over questionable calls in Sunday’s game vs. North Carolina went far past fake reviews on his roofing company’s Facebook page. According to ESPN, Higgins received death threats from Kentucky fans, which prompted a meeting with law enforcement:

Sources said the phones at Higgins’ home and business have been “ringing off the hook” since the game, with angry Kentucky calling to complain and some even going so far as to make death threats.

That prompted a meeting with law enforcement.

Higgins declined to comment when reached by phone, but sources said the official will work the Final Four in Phoenix.

Ugh. We have to be better than this, guys.

    Disappointing BBN

It was Gonzaga/Northwestern but whatever- you’re the expert on officiating. You’re only touching the tip of the iceberg. The Monk foul on Jackson’s 3, the non-call on Fox at the end of the 1st half, the countless push-offs by Berry, the countless over the backs by Meeks………..

I am not going to defend death threats, but when you have a bad official who repeatedly shows bias against a specific team, and that bias impacts the outcome of the game, then receives NO REPRIMAND FROM THE NCAA, then this is what happens. If the NCAA would get the terrible officiating under control, and ban d’bags like this one from ever officiating a UK game, these sorts of things would not happen.

There were bound to be some numb skulls who came unhinged but how in the hell did he rate to call a final 4 game. The NCAA is the one we should be bombarding with calls.

Because if you watch the calls without blue glasses on you see they were not bad, except the basket interference which took super slow mo to see. That is NCAA issue, allow replay at next dead ball for those calls.

That is my point, watch the tapes. Willis grabs the wrist on loose ball. Bams off hand is clearly on neck/shoulder. Fox block was the other ref call. Basket interference probably 75% or more of the refs would have called, NCAA needs to allow review. Any non bias person watching the tape you want us to watch would see this. You look through blue glasses. What about the last jumper Hump made, was a walk so call for that to be made. Oh, it was ok to miss that since it was in our favor.

WearBBN, and Meeks pushed off with two handed shoves in the chest to get post position, came over the back on half his rebounds, their guards could be called for offensive fouls and most drives, and what they did to Fox at the end of the first half might have been a felony. Get your head out of your arse. It was ONE SIDED. If those were infractions on us, then they CLEARLY were on them.

Death Threats are insanely stupid. Stop it…just stop it.

That being said, I feel no pity for him. He ruined the season and that’s going to haunt those kids and fans for the rest of their lives.

The NCAA obviously isn’t going to police anything since he’s also working the Final Four.

I have no problem with shutting down his personal stuff and blowing him up. He reaps what he sows.

However, no death threats or threats against his family. No..No no no.

Want to blow up his business page, troll the heck out of him, and call him to tell him he’s terrible. Then by all means do. Death threats, no.

This is the damn problem. You’re condoning harassment. It absolutely is not okay to call him and troll him and all that nonsense. Our guys had PLENTY of opportunities to win the game, yet here we are still blaming the officiating. Why don’t you put the blame on some of our guys for allowing a 4:30 minute scoring drought in the final 5 minutes of the game? Or for allowing Meeks to collect 17 rebounds? Or our guards missing free throws? Or Willis/Mulder collectively not making a single 3? The ref is not the damn reason we lost the game. Accept it and move on.

      12:35 pm March 29, 2017 Permalink

What if you didn’t have a bad day at work and intentionally ruined it for others? Do you expect no consequences for your deliberate actions? Death threats are idiotic. No doubt about that. Grown adults with personal grudges taking it out on 18 yr old kids trying to play a freaking game is also idiotic.

    • KSR Spy
      11:41 am March 29, 2017 Permalink

Killing momentum, taking half our team out of the game, and keeping UNC with a lead…yes, big cause of the loss. If the game had been called fairly and we played exactly the way we did…we would have won. No question.

Once again for those that can’t read, I do not condone the death threats.

If I had one bad day at work? No, if it was consistent…yes. I would expect my clients to express their dissatisfaction with myself and my employer. If my employer gave me a raise for my bad work and kept me on that client, I would expect the client to be even more livid and do everything to get me taken off the contract or get out of the contract. Then I would also expect them to express their discontent to all of their peers.

So yes…i have no problem with anything here outside of the threats. Those need to stop.

Leave Briscoe, the other players, and Cal out of it. As for Cal, he took a young team that was floundering mid-season, and we beat a top 5 team that had dominated us earlier in the year, and we lost on a last second shot to the team that will probably win the title.
WeareBBN, you’re obviously not a UK fan…why don’t you go away and take your blue tinted glasses to Duke or NC fan blogs?

well running454… I used them as examples of how stupid it would be to do, even saying how stupid does that sound to blame them. I am a UK fan, football season tix holder, make several bball games {mens and womens}, make some baseball and softball as well….all while living 3 hours away. Just every game we lose this site and the fans blame the refs and act like we are the only team that gets questionable calls. Cal is not a great game coach, great recruiter, great guy, great for the program in his own way. I don’t care for him because I prefer titles and the one and done relying ion freshman can’t win titles. Before you say 2012 remember Lamb and Jones were back as Final Four Sophs and Miller was a Sr leader. In the big game, on offense, the Fr choked. Had Rick P stayed here we would be nearing 15 titles, if not there already, and would have been the greatest dynasty in the history of sports. Not a fan of what he has done since he got to loserville but am a fan of what he did here.

So you don’t like the superstar 5* one-and-done freshmen? You want to go back to Tubby with 2* and 3* and losing to Gardner-Webb and UAB.

I’m not saying some Kentucky fans didn’t do this, but it’s also not out of the realm of possibility that trolls have done this to make UK fans look bad too. Again, you can’t control what a small % of idiots do no matter what belief system you have.

I think the funny posts were okay as these officials have no accountability and I wouldn’t be shocked if the NCAA was sticking it to Cal for his comments about the NCAA and creating super conferences to essentially cause the NCAA to be irrelevant, but any serious threats are uncalled for.

I have seen maybe 5-10 games (not just UK games) in over 30 years where I felt the game was fixed or a ref had a deliberate hand in the outcome. This ref has now been in at least 2 of those games.

    • WeareBBN

First, those idiots are not UK fans, they are scum of the earth. The trolls do not need to make us look bad, we do that after every loss. I wouldn’t put it past trolls, either. In this article, it talks about how after the controversial OK-Kansas game a similar thing happened and he forwarded them to the authorities. I know the West Virginia fans don’t like him, either.

But suffice it to say, no matter how awful his officiating is — and it certainly is — we condemn any form of threatening behavior to his personal life, business or family. The BBN is better than that.

But we should also remember what Cal said about everything being “on tape” and make sure the world sees it.

I think the lack of public oversight of these refs leads to fans feeling hopeless after such a loss. The coach & players can’t say anything in fear of fines and suspension. Who will step up and call out such a poorly officiated game? What are the repercussions and consequences of a Rouge Ref?

Death treats are beyond silly as I’m sure this guy had no intention of calling the game for UNC. He just had a really, really bad night. Fans are emotionally and financially invested in their teams and they deserve better & accountability from the NCAA. Something we’ve never seen from Mark Emmert & his officiating crews. This year’s SEC games were a new level of bad and nothing is being done to fix the problem.

Tell me again how UNC & Louisville were eligible to play in the tournament this year? College basketball is almost unwatchable these days.

I would never threaten him, nor crash his FB; not my style, but I did sign the petition.
They asked for a comment so I said “He looked like he had money on the game”. I realize that is a harsh criticism; but, that was my initial thought while watching the game.
I realize refs miss calls, especially bang-bang plays in today’s game; but, to say he had a “bad game” is a whitewash. I have watched and loved basketball for over 50 years; and until last Sunday, it had never occurred to me that an official might have an ulterior motive. And I would have felt that way if I had been watching Podunk College play Backwoods U.
It would beneficial for all if he never calls another UK game.

I think the easy solution to the officiating issue is to give each team one challenge per half that they can use to get a bad call reviewed and possibly reversed. It seems to work pretty well in football – why not basketball? Why not use the technology that is out there to make the game better? I know they review certain calls now, but it is limited. This should extend to other calls that can be a judgement call, especially when human error can affect the outcome of a game.

And it set a precedent in the UK players minds that they would not get a fair call, and that affected their defensive tenacity the rest of the game.

sitting 4 players is Cals decision. Not all coaches sit players after 2 fouls in the first half.

And the 2 fouls on Monk were fouls. The 2 on Bam were fouls. The first on Fox was a charge but was called by the black ref and not the one all is bashing, the 2nd on Fox was a foul. Willis who cares, he is always out of position D and that draws fouls.

Yes Cal should have played players with 2 fouls so they could foul out before halftime. Brilliant deduction Sherlock.

In that picture, Higgins sure looks like he, ahem, bats left-handed. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! 🙂

Boo hoo. So I guess the NCAA has no choice but to not allow him to do more UK games right?

First off- Death Threats really are insanely stupid. On that, hopefully we All Agree.

Integrity can not be selective, and actions speak louder than words. Personally, I have no use for referees, roofers, or fans, who lack integrity. In the real world, facts are facts and they are Not optional.
Fact is, Higgins compromised his own integrity, so however it affects him is a result of his choice.

Sorry, I’m not taking his word for it. IF, someone made death threats then threats on them and they should be dealt with. But this guy turning his discriminatory actions into be a victim. Sorry, not sorry.

The guy uses his status as NCAA referee to promote his private business, then everybody is surprised when his actions as NCAA referee negatively impact his private business?

True, personal threats are over the line, but promoting himself as a rooferee goest both ways

The idiotic fringe of people doing this, the posts on his company’s FB and especially the supposed threats, give all of us fans a bad name. There’s no place for it. The guy made some bad calls and has a history of them but we had a chance to win and didn’t. The world is still spinning and the sun has come up for now three days after the game. It’s OK. Believe it or not there are more important things than UK basketball, and even if it was most important making threats to a referee is wrong.

Nice job.ESPN reports NATIONWIDE that Kentucky fans made death threats to ref.Really makes us look like Sh*t.No wonder Kentucky is probably the most hated Team in Collage basketball outside of the state. I’m as passionate about the Cats as anyone, but damn.If I were a recruit and Cal wanted me,I’d have to think really hard if I wanted to be criticized by fans for,”dropping my fork”.Not to mention the negative impact these death threats will have in future games and in unexpected ways.We WILL be shat on again just because of the reaction of ones who made death threats and have stained our program, good going..Take a page from Cal,..At the post game presser,he made mention of the refs, but pulled back fast because he knows their is a target on his back, and everyone who hates us in college ball are working overtime just trying to find any reason to “bust” the program on some “bs” actions.I couldn’t sleep for 2 days after the game, but people, we need to stop giving others more reasons to hate us.

So has anyone checked to see if Higgins was also calling the UNC / Arkansas game? You know, the one where the UNC player should have been called for a charge, or at least a walk, but the ref swallowed his whistle and allowed UNC to score on the play. Sounds kind of familiar, doesn’t it?

Let’s look at it…the guy screwed the pooch. No doubt in my mind. Was it intentional? Again…no doubt in my mind. Does any of this change the fact that the game is over, and will never be played again? There will be no asterisk next to the eventual champions name in the record book. It’s over! However, the man did use his gig as a Referee to promote his business. Only fair that when he fails this bad as a ref, it gets used as a method to mock him. He does However, have the right to live his life without fear of physical harm and especially death. The hope is that maybe the attention will result in better review policies both during games and of the officials involved. Who knows, maybe the NCAA should consider providing 5 names to each coach for each game, and allowing each coach to scratch one. Point is, there are solutions. It appears the NCAA wants profit rather than fairness. It’s not a conspiracy, it’s a business. Any time money is involved, there is a chance for corruption. But the NCAA is absolutely concerned with Vegas. Otherwise, points shaving and etc. wouldn’t be criminal acts. Whether Higgy screwed this up on his own, or was financially motivated, doesn’t matter. A more transparent system would alleviate most of these issues in the future. Now let’s grow up, quit making threats, and we can all admit that the second half is where the game was won and lost. We had a chance we blew it. We aren’t seeing any evidence in the second half of poor calls. The game was altered, but we still had a reasonable shot.
