Draft Express’ latest mock also has Willie slipping

wcs face

Last week, Chad Ford said he’s hearing Willie Cauley-Stein’s stock is slipping leading up to Thursday’s draft and we were all like “SHUT UP CHAD FORD, YOU THOUGHT JAMES YOUNG WAS A GREAT PASSER.” Well, this morning, Draft Express’ Jonathan Givony posted his latest mock draft, and in it, he says the same thing. Givony predicts Willie will go 11th to the Pacers, which is also where Ford has him going:

11. Willie Cauley-Stein, Indiana Pacers

Concerns around Cauley-Stein’s background and medical history could cause him to fall out of the Top-10 according to recent reports we’ve received, which would be a huge boon for Indiana, who are currently in the market for a starting center. Cauley-Stein is the most versatile defender in this draft class, and the Pacers have done a great job of helping other young underachieving players reach their full potential in the past.

A few years ago, we found out Willie has a sickle cell trait, which sometimes causes fatigue. Considering it took me a minute to remember that, it didn’t seem to affect his career at Kentucky too much. Also, if these “concerns about Cauley-Stein’s background” are what I think they are, that’s bogus. Yes, he likes to experiment with his hair, gave himself a silly middle name without even knowing what it meant, and is a different kind of dude, but anyone who has talked to him knows that’s a good thing.

Rant over, sorry. Here’s where the rest of the Cats rank in Draft Express’ Monday mock:

1. Karl Towns, Minnesota Timberwolves

9. Devin Booker, Charlotte Hornets

11. Willie Cauley-Stein, Indiana Pacers

13. Trey Lyles, Phoenix Suns

40. Dakari Johnson, Miami Heat

43. Andrew Harrison, Indiana Pacers

One more interesting note: Givony says the gap between Towns and Jahlil Okafor has “widened significantly” in recent months to the point it’s a “foregone conclusion” Towns will go #1. Wow.

This kind of stuff happens all the time right before the draft. Somebody leaks information about some players background in the hopes they will fall to their team or an agent can get his client more money by leapfrogging another player. Honestly it will cost him money but Indiana is a better situation than Sacramento anyway.

I have a feeling Trey is going to be the steal of the draft. Had he not been on a team with a #1 Draft pick in the post, we would have appreciated him much more. He is the type of player that would have been legendary with 2 years.
Put 20 pounds on him over the next 5-6 years and he becomes the type of player GMs would love to have with a shooter star. Strong, can score, rebounds well.

Trey’s being injured/sick also limited his exposure and development a little. I think he’ll be very good in a few years as well.

This is stupid. If Willie had “background issues” everyone would already know about them. There are no secrets about basketball players in Lexington. There were NBA scouts and media at every game and most practices.
