Kentucky and Kansas State do not share an illustrious history as opponents on the basket court, but Bruce Weber and John Calipari have a salacious history off the court.
It all starts with Anthony Davis. Before the Unibrow picked Kentucky over Illinois, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Davis would choose UK after receiving $200,000 for his commitment. Obviously, the rumor was nothing more than a rumor. The origin of that rumor is where things get interesting.
Gregg Doyel, then at CBS, revealed to Matt Jones and a few others that Bruce Weber leaked the story to the Sun-Times.
“If anybody is behind this, Weber is behind this, because he doesn’t lose very well. And, he unfortunately loses recruits left and right. Nobody loses more recruits than Bruce Weber. That ought to be on his coat of arms – Bruce Weber: Losing recruits like a son of a gun.”
Neither Calipari or Weber ever commented on the matter. Is it true that Weber tried to sabotage Anthony Davis commitment to Kentucky? Maybe, maybe not. But if he did, I don’t think John Calipari would graciously accept the slander without carrying a grudge to Atlanta.
