Is this the week we say goodbye to DeWayne Peevy? Lawrence Kreymer, the sports editor of DePaul’s student newspaper, is reporting that DeWayne Peevy has been offered the position of athletic director. Per Kreymer, DePaul is “now working on finishing the deal.” Ugh.
Last week, the Chicago Tribune reported that DeWayne Peevy was one of two finalists for job along with Northwestern’s Mike Polisky. Peevy has been with UK for twelve years, six in his current role as Deputy Director of Athletics. Prior to coming to Lexington, the Birmingham, Alabama native worked with the Southeastern Conference. He has been an integral part of shaping the John Calipari Era through media relations, marketing, and scheduling and is the liaison to the SEC and SEC Network offices. Recently, Peevy was singled out as one of the “behind-the-scenes power players” in the SEC by AL.com’s John Talty and Matt Zenitz, who said it’s “only a matter of time” before he becomes an athletic director.
Peevy means a tremendous amount to the Kentucky Basketball program and losing him would be a big blow, especially on the heels of Kenny Payne taking the job with the New York Knicks, but if he takes the job, we wish him nothing but the best. Hopefully he’ll be back in Lexington one day.
