Derek Willis will not miss any games for summer arrest

Mark Zerof | USA Today

Mark Zerof | USA Today

Derek Willis will not be suspended for his public intoxication arrest over the summer, John Calipari announced today.

Cal said he and Willis have “talked a few different times” and “Derek knows he’s under a different eye now than he was.”

Willis was punished internally for the incident, although Cal would not elaborate on the extent of that punishment.

Calipari has done a great job at keeping players out of trouble and grooming young men into class acts since he’s been at UK, but I don’t agree with not suspending him at least a game or two. Especially since he’s going into his senior year, to do something so dumb and not get suspended really sets a bad picture for the team.

Hmmm, “FBI Informant” trolling in three, two, one…

I tend to agree, however, that some type of more public punishment should have been handed down to Derek for bringing unwanted negative attention to the program.

Dont need to troll. I think it’s pretty clear that people think it is the wrong decision.

I’m reaching? And UL isn’t my school. I’m a UK alum.

What did he say that was incorrect? Looks like his opinion is backed up by the facts surrounding Cal’s tenure at UMass. Like it or not, before he got to UK, Cal ran two completely rogue programs in UMass & Memphis. The amount of crime, NCAA issues, legal problems, drug problems, domestic abuse problems, etc, far outweighed the norm, and outshined the winning. Just bc it doesn’t appear that he runs the same type of program at UK, shouldn’t dismiss the pathetic programs that proceeded. Even our own Matt Jones called him out before the title game at Memphis, and he was completely justified in doing so.

You know what’s fun? When we post negative things about UL, knowing that UK has had their fair share of employees with run ins with the law, and UL fans are going to easily point all of them out with a 3sec Google search. It may be wise to not expose our own glass house.

      Uk is my alma-mater.
But I live in Louisville. Unfortunately my alma-mater has a sports fanbase where the vast majority never went to college and therefore cannot conseptualize the difference between sports and real-life.

Well, we know that the BOT at UL had many UK fans on it, including the person that was leaking info to Matt. Now Junior Bridgeman is in charge of the hiring of the new BOT. Junior will certainly be putting together an Athletics Friendly Board and I can’t imagine that being a big UK fan will be finding themselves as part of the group. You think Jurich has had power before? Just wait till he lobbies his people onto the BOT. Facilities and money for coaching is getting ready to go through the roof.

Why all the butthurt? Forde said Cal owned the draft, which is a huge deal for recruiting as was just stated. And then he simply made the true comment that owning draft day every single year doesn’t equate to National Championships. That’s a fact. Why are you all so sensitive about it?

Wait… Rick isn’t allowed to use plausible deniability but Calipari is? At UMass they were cheating on grades to keep guys eligible which is an on campus issue, had agents buying HOOKERS and jewelry and giving cash to Camby ON CAMPUS, at Memphis he had Roses brother ON THE PLANE right in front of his face, and they had players busted for PROSTITUTES, and they had players busted for starting riots, and they had players busted for drugs, and on and on and on and on and on. But now Cal is not the same guy that had banners removed at two places? I’m confused.

Look, another Pitino article, followed by awkward stalking story about eavesdropping on UL players at Foot Locker. Jeez this stuff makes UK fans look dumb. Seriously, who goes to Foot Locker since the Internet was invented?

17 points? I’ll take So Miss and give you 2 to 1 odds.

They’re a better team. They may not win since it’s a road game but there’s no way in hell they lose by 17 points.

Anyone that thinks 7 wins was going to happen is absolutely out of their freakin mind, over the top, blinders on.

This team is a 3-4 win team against this schedule.

      The only wins are:
      NM St
      Missouri
      Austin Peay
      Possible wins:
      Southern Miss
      South Carolina

The rest are absolute losses with no questions about it whatsoever.

And if there are a couple of injuries at certain spots it’s gonna be a 2 win season.

Kentucky football is in the dumpster.

Every post you make disses UK and/or defends ul.

      Begone, now.

At least he didn’t suspend him indefinitely and then end the suspension before the 1st game, like Pitino would’ve. Cal is honest from the start, no need to put on a show like Ricky boy.

Coach Cal knows exactly what he is doing and I believe that over the years he has proven that he has the best interest of the players and the University at heart. I trust his judgment and if he feels that the situation has been handled properly, then I don’t see that there is any problem. This is not a situation where the punishment, if any, needs to satisfy the fans. it is a situation where that Mr. Willis needs proper guidance and I believe that is exactly what Coach Cal will give him. Case closed.

Good move. There are ways to hold people accountable without suspending them. In the end, punish the kid, not the team and state by having him sit out games.

Willis should be required to complete a rehab program. I’m sure he’s been working off community service hours.

Is it a waste of time and money for ACL surgery/therapy?

    • Booby Petrino
      4:11 pm August 25, 2016 Permalink

I don’t see the correlation between ACL surgery and a rehab program pertaining to alcohol, but I’ll answer your question: Sometimes it is a waste of time and money to have ACL surgery, like when they just keep injuring it and never fully recover. But sometimes it is not a waste of money. Now..back to rehab program. You’re saying that just bc a 20yo college kid got drunk and arrested for PI that he has a dependency on alcohol and needs rehabilitation? That’s extremely presumptuous.

I think the big issue with Derek since he has been at UK is emotional maturity. A lot of times, he still thinks like a teen-ager. I can’t say too much, because there are times that I still think that way as well! 🙂 But seriously, this incident will hopefully inspire Derek to assume a more responsible mindset. He has the potential to take this basketball thing for a long and lucrative ride if he plays his cards right. Would be a shame to see him blow it over silly, immature decisions.
