Derek Willis puts the speculation to rest

(UKAthletics.com)

All weekend long the talk has been stirring about the possibility of a Derek Willis transfer from Kentucky. Pat Forde got the conversation rolling on Saturday morning when he tweeted out that multiple sources had been saying that Willis was weighing the option of transferring. Willis’ father made it clear that Willis was 100% staying at Kentucky.

Tonight, Derek himself took to Twitter to quiet the speculation. Judging by the tone of his tweets, he’s getting a little sick of all of the rumors.

Hawkins grew up 23 miles from UK and grew up watching them. Do you really think he wants to miss out on being part of this team? Besides, Hawkins will get playing time. He’s a guard.

I’m sure an apology from Forde is forthcoming, right, for putting this kid through all of this unwanted national attention to something for which there was no evidence?

…or will he come out and say his sources have more information than Derek Willis and his father have access to?

Media matters makes things up and takes them out of context or engages in complete fabrication – doing precisely what they claim to be against, of course.

Oh yeah – praise Canada – where posting anything negative is considered defamation for which you can be sued out of existence and also prosecuted and sent to jail – even if it is completely true.

I’d like to see him play more simply b/c he’s a mismatch. Put him at the two and if the other team goes man, he backs his guy down inside. If they go zone, he busts it from outside.

Of course, on the defensive end we’d have to play zone entirely while he’s in. No biggie.

Paula Deen, Paula Deen, Paula Deen, when are you ever going to learn not to say things that just aren’t so? I know you LOVE Rick and that’s ok but please just stay over THERE. Why don’t you investigate why Chane Behannan and Kevin Ware were kicked off the UL squad over last summer? Isn’t that the kind of thing you like to do? You know, dirty investigative work. No? Oh, you just like to spout out things that just aren’t true. I don’t care who your sources were. What a UL homer….you mad bro? Awwwwwwww poor thing, poor poor thing…….go complain about that you have to pay for food at NCAA games or something when it’s only $6.00 dollars for a meal.

You two are idiots arguing about if he talked to other schools and he announced he’s staying. What does it really matter? He will do what’s best for him. He will never get any clock at the 4. FORGET THAT. With Alex coming back I doubt he sees anything but clean up minutes again. I live in Louisville but im a Kentucky fan. I seen him play high school ball probably 10 times and im gonna tell you this he never was great at any one thing he’s above average at most things and average at the others. Hes really to slow for the 3 but I wish him well and hope he succeeds I really thought that him and Jon Hood would have been better served at a Western Kentucky type of school. I could be wrong but I don’t see him playing hardly any again next year and why waste your playing days sitting on the bench when you are a good basketball player? Go to western and start at the 3 or 4 and join the 1000 point club kid.

You know as much about UK basketball and the reason for playing there as you are at putting together a fake trolling screed. Your comment: “I live in Louisville but im a Kentucky fan” gives you away – when you have to make a qualifying statement that makes no sense – like you are defending yourself against a charge not being made. If you are Louisville you are also in Kentucky so that doesn’t make sense to begin with. You must not have watched too many games with him playing as he was the bomb at Bullitt East. They were invited to national tournaments only a select few schools get invited in the entire country going toe to toe against the best teams and players in no small part because of Derek Willis.

      Nice try. Now go away.

    • Dee W.
      10:43 pm April 27, 2014 Permalink

Right, right. I’ve seen that posted quite a few times. It’s a bunch of garbage – just as much now as the first time it was posted going all the way back to when he was first recruited. D-Will played excellent ball at Bullitt East and the team was invited to prestigious national tournaments to play against the best teams and players in the country and he was no small reason for that, and he did very well against them. There is also no indication D-Will has the arrogant attitude you are portraying him as having – quite the opposite.

Get lost, troll. We saw the kid play – your “source” is as credible as the Pat Forde nonsense.

Well, hell, I know his dad, mom, aunt sue, uncle bob, high school coach, 4th grade rec league coach, coach cal and his trainer (oh, and his dentist)! I’m clearly close to the family so listen to me and forget what they say. Derek now hates his HS coach b/c Derek does not have a mind of his own and got pushed to UK. As a result, he’s been looking hard at other schools even though he was clearly bore hyped coming out of HS. (Julius Randle mystery have been making up his comments to Matt about Derek’s offensive abilities after his KSR interview last week.)

No, Derek’s gone… His tweet was to throw everyone off the trail. Trust me I know!

  29. Reality Check

He’s 19. He doesn’t have a clue. Half way through this next season he’ll realize why people are speculating. It won’t matter how he improves he won’t get time over these incoming freshmen. They were sold an NBA dream. At best he’ll get some time as a senior. If he is content to be a UK player and watch them succeed on the bench he’ll be fine. Sadly for him he’s better than that. Only time will tell. I guarantee Lee transfers after this season. He won’t get any time again and he’s not a Kentucky kid. He should save himself a year and go now. There ain’t enough minutes to go around on a Cal 7 man rotation. He won’t even play them early in the season in blowouts. Willis and Hawkins are UK kids so they’ll stick around and get the shaft just to be a part of it. Maybe it’s worth it for them.

This kid can play, you can see it when he gets time on the court. I don’t think we will see much of him in the upcoming year though, there is just no space. If he sticks it out though, I could see him being a major factor in his junior season. Lets hope he has the foresight to hang in at KY and abide his time, it will pay off for him in the end.
