Derek Willis hit 55 threes in five minutes today

Derek Willis had himself a nice little practice today, according to a tweet from John Calipari Monday night. The freshman forward from Mount Washington hit 55 three-pointers in a five minute span, exactly 55 more three-pointers than you or I hit today.

Calipari also said Alex Poythress was “unreal again today” and all the guys are getting better.

Bring it on, A&M!

Cal doesn’t believe in playing whites. So, he could hit 500 of them in 5 minutes and it would not matter.

    • Musehobo

The reason is that while he provides a decent shot, he does not provide defense, athleticism, rebounds, passing, or anything else. Personally, I would like to see him play more. But if Cal doesn’t think him being on the floor is an asset for us right now, I trust his coaching ability over my armchair coaching ability.

He hasn’t been hitting in practice. I thought he’d get a shot against UT but after we started hitting the 3’s the way we did and the wing players playing the way they were I think Cal did the right thing in waiting for another day. I look to see him tonight, I hope his confidence is up since he’s had a couple good days of practice.

Why ain’t he playin? Think of a more athletic Wiltjer 2.0 he would just delay his man going around him 1/10th a sec longer . Can’t guard a middle schooler, that’s real talk..

How about he doesn’t play because he’s still learning how to play solid D, hasn’t hit that 3 in game (1 for 5) and he lacks D1 strength. Sounds like Kyle from last year and you guys were calling for his head. I suppose the grass is always greener…

    • Real Cracka
      9:46 pm January 20, 2014 Permalink

Yea, 30 whole minutes in 17 games to prove himself. That seems like a fair judgement. If he has any sense he’ll transfer like Kyle. Because Cal will continue to recruit over him and continue to let him languish on the bench no matter how good he is.

    • Good times
      9:54 pm January 20, 2014 Permalink

I think you must be part of the “clutter” that Cal was talking about. Who do you exactly suggest Willis take time away from? Julius? Alex? James? Truth is you could make just as much of an argument for more playing time for Marcus, but I suspect you don’t have the same warm feelings for him.

    • Ukfan
      2:20 pm January 21, 2014 Permalink

As I have several times before, Calipari needs to press more, rotate in and develop his bench more. Do that and we don’t have the issue like we did last year. (And lay an egg on point guard). Darius Miller was a key reason we won a championship….please remember that Coach Cal.

Do you watch the games? The twins and young can’t guard anyone either. Willis should play much more than what he is playing. He’s a basketball player. He’s more athletic than Wiltjer, can handle the ball, he can pass, he plays better defense than Wiltjer, and he can shoot. There is no reason why he isn’t getting at least 10-15 minutes a game.

    • Good times
      10:03 pm January 20, 2014 Permalink

I watch the games enough to realize the Twins don’t play the same position as Willis so your point is moot. Please, go ahead and make an argument for Polson to start over them. Not saying Willis isn’t a player, but he would take minutes from Julius, Alex and James and don’t see him making as much of an impact as any of those guys.

    • SoonerCat
      10:30 pm January 20, 2014 Permalink

Suzanne said the twins don’t play defense not once did she say that they play the same position as Willis so your point is moot.

      12:24 am January 21, 2014 Permalink

As bad as Young is shooting, and considering he can’t feed the post and his D is horrible. I would give some of his minutes to Willis.

    • Good times
      10:20 am January 21, 2014 Permalink

Considering Suzanne was making an argument for more playing time for Willis, bringing the Twins into it is at the very least irrelevant.

I agree that Cal does allow some players to make a ton more mistakes than others. I don’t believe it is a race thing however. 30 minutes in 17 games is defiantly not enough game time to be able to truly evaluate a player. Less then 2 minutes per game is pitiful. You pose the question of who you would set between Young,Alex or Randall? I don’t think anyone was suggesting starting Willis, but for God sakes give the kid a chance. All 3 of those guys have had periods of laziness or just plain bad play and Cal as stuck with them. They are all better than Willis, but you never know how good a kid can be unless you give him a shot Cal.

You don’t need minutes to prove you can guard someone. I for one would like to win this year, and our best bet is to develop young, poythress, randle, all the spots Willis would be playing. I’m sure Willis is fine with his time, he couldn’t have reasonably planned on getting major minutes this year. I think Willis will be a player here if he works hard and puts on strength. I still don’t know why he didn’t redshirt this year, he’s a player that’s going to take some time to develop.

This is Coach Cal’s way to publicly state the obvious that he is pacifying the fans and Willis by letting the fans know that Willis is shooting well. In reality, Willis just isn’t ready yet defenseively to guard SEC level competition yet. He will get ready and will contribute more next year and could even start by his junior or senior year. Lets be patient with Derek Willis. He probably should have been redshirted. Lets remember that he did score some very early in the season and probably could again if given the opportunity. He is NOT Josh Carrier and potentially a lot better. If he could grow into a Scott Padgett type role then I will be very happy.

This team will get bounced pretty early and after next yrs fans will really be tired of this exhausting shit. Having new players every year is getting very old.

soft troll or lackwit? Either way, I’ll bite

-One season since the last NCAA ship
-In the preseason, pundits heralded this years class as one of the best of all time; as it stands, this class can still stand out in a big way if they can cut down on turnovers and show more consistency on the defensive end

I agree that dealing with the growing pains of each new team can be agonizing. The problem, as I see it, is the hype. UK has already had exceptional recruiting classes, and the bar keeps being raised higher. That’s why comments as yours are made when we’re only halfway through the season. Shit happens, especially on the road. Wall and co. lost at unranked South Carolina, Davis et al lost at unranked Indiana. Don’t lose perspective on what this team really is: a group of (mostly) freshmen that are growing, as a team, exponentially. Individually, they’re used to being THE option for every clutch scenario, and now they’re figuring out how to play as a team in hostile road environments.

Frankly, I foresee a successful year next year. I think that we’ll see a solid foundation, even with a mass departure. We’ll be graced with the best forwards in the country, collectively. Further, we’ll have a guard that can distribute with such ease that he’ll look like John Stockton next to Andrew Harrison.

we are not good at making assists
we are not good scoring transition fast break baskets after defensive rebounds
our starters want to get “their” shots in the half court… so they keep the ball too long which causes turnovers and low assists and explains their lack of interest in the fast break…imo

On a comment this week on KSR the talk was about the mid range jumper, Well as coach Geno Auriemma said the mid range jumper is a lost art, why? because no one practices it anymore. As soon as players (boys) walk on the floor they practice dunks then head to the three point line no one practices shooting the mid range jumper off the dribble. As a coach I had a young man one time that hit 86 threes out of 100 so I said let’s shoot 100 mid range jumpers he made 42, and that is with no defense. So it don’t surprise me Willis can do that but I would bet he could not make that many mid range jumpers
