Derek Willis knew he was ready to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Keely Potts; he just didn’t know when to do it.
“I was trying to figure out the right time to do it and with our busy schedules we don’t have that much free time,” he explained, following the Tuesday night engagement and ensuing basketball game. “I figured this would be an important enough day since it’s a big moment for the both of us being Senior Night. I just wanted to share it with everyone.”
Willis’ teammates didn’t find out until moments before they took the floor, when John Calipari called Willis up in front of the team during the pregame talk. Calipari said, “They gave him a standing-O and hugged him in the locker room.”
Then came the moment, in front of 20,000-plus people in Rupp Arena and cameras all around, when Willis took one knee and went to place the ring on her finger.
As he explained it, “She was pretty nervous and asked me if I was serious. I said, ‘Well yeah.’ She was nervous and has been emotional all week since it’s senior night. When I went to put the ring on her finger her hands were shaking and I asked if she could just keep them still for a second because I was nervous to put it on too.”
“It was a pretty cool moment for me and it meant a lot… I’m glad I could share it with everyone in Rupp Arena.”
