Derek Anderson blasts John Calipari on Louisville radio

Derek Anderson did an interview with Drew Deener on ESPN 680 yesterday, and, well, he certainly had a lot to say. Anderson took shots at John Calipari, last year’s Kentucky team, and the players who decided to go pro after this season, claiming that kids today have no concept of what it’s like to play against the caliber of players he played against during his college career.

“We won against pros and we dominated. We averaged 91 points a game. How many did this team average? 75?” Anderson said of this year’s Kentucky team, which finished 38-1.

Anderson then criticized John Calipari for letting kids go pro instead of encouraging them to stay in school and develop their skills.

“If Coach Cal wanted to keep these kids and develop them, he should tell them that. He’s just running them in and out. It’s not him, it’s not just him, it’s the parents. If my son is supposed to go second round, ‘Son, you need to stay in school, get your degree in case something happens, and also finish the job. Make sure you make these people know you can actually play.’ They’re just running them out of here. Like Dakari Johnson. I hope he makes it, but he’s a 7-footer who can’t jump. What’s he going to do with no degree when he’s done in two years?”

When Deener mentioned the Harrison Twins, Anderson continued his rant.

“It’s sad to see this man. I never thought–if I was a coach, I wouldn’t allow it to happen. I would keep my players and develop them and teach them there’s a better, different way to do this.”

Anderson then criticized John Calipari’s coaching, which he says cost Kentucky the 2014 National Championship.

“Last year, when we went to the Final Four with [Julius] Randle and them, it was because of pure talent, and the reason we lost? Coaching. Why did Louisville beat [UConn] by 30? They pressured their guards. We let the kid Shabazz Napier–he walked the ball up and just shot in our face the whole night. I’m like, ‘did you not watch the tape of Louisville beating them? They pressured these guys.'”

When Deener said it sounded like Anderson wasn’t happy with how things were going at Kentucky, Anderson agreed. “It kills me. I’m tweeting people, I’m like, ‘Coach, you know you can run a lob to your seven-footer.’ Nobody can jump.”

When Deener asked if the BBN had attacked Anderson yet for his comments, Anderson said no. In fact…

No, they agree with me. Look at them, I’ve never had problems with them. I had one guy on Facebook say, ‘Well, he’s doing pretty good, he’s 30-something and 0, he’s doing really well, he’s going to the Final Four.’ And every time at the end of the game, end of the season, we don’t win a championship, I say ‘are you happy now? Since you want to give Coach all this praise?’

I love Coach, I think he’s a great guy, he helps people out, he brings us back, he’s treated me with nothing but respect, but I’m talking about coaching. I’m not talking about personal, I’m talking about coaching. If you’re going to coach these kids, let’s make them play the game the right way.

So basically he’s selfish and don’t want the kids to eat while they can and then come back to school if they need to.

Don’t want to have negative feelings about DA. Really, really don’t, but the last several years he seems to be doing things to get attention. These comments were really unnecessary. Sometimes I wonder if former (pre-Calipari) players are just jealous of all the attention the current players get.

Coaching cost us a title this year, and he is right. Ask Doron Lamb, Teague and others who went in the later rounds and are no longer in the league. The problem is the fans here are too biased by all the McDonald’s All Americans coming through here, not winning a title, then going on to the NBA.

And by the way, Cal has taken more pride in us being an NBA developmental league team than winning titles. He’s gotten in trouble for admitting to it.

Are you saying the players and their families had no input on whether to go to the NBA and that they ultimately didn’t make the decision, Calipari made the decision for these adults?

Are you saying that if Lamb stayed at Kentucky 4 years rather than 2 he’d have a long NBA career?

I mean I agree that his coaching may have cost us the West Virginia game in 2010, but on the other hand he wasn’t the one bricking all of those shots. I agree, his coaching may have cost us this past year if it was his idea to take his foot off the gas and to not feed Towns.

I don’t really agree that he cost us the UConn game by not pressuring Napier and Boatright. UL had quick guards and were a pressing team all season. Kentucky didn’t press a lot, had 6’6 guards that weren’t very quick, and didn’t have their rim protector.

I disagree with DA’s comments about the NBA. Cal gets the players information and I believe 95% of the time the player/family makes their own decision. Now if the player is a top 10 pick, maybe Cal does nudge them. The players can always return for their degrees. They are accountable for their decisions in life.

I do agree that Cal takes a lot of pride in the NBA side, but I also think he wants to win titles every year regardless of the perception he puts out regarding the NBA (his top marketing concept for recruiting)

Not saying he would still be in the league, but at least he would be closer to having a college degree for life beyond basketball. Indeed, he MAY come back and get his degree, but the chances of that are far less after they’ve been out several years. I don’t blame Calipari for them leaving though. These kids come with the expectation that staying more than one year is failure. Parents, friends, and people in “their group” are telling them all sorts of stuff.
In my opinion, if you’re not a sure first-rounder, you need to come back.

Coaches coach, but players are the ones who have to execute on the floor during the game.

Syrin23, Doron Lamb is no longer in the NBA because he lacks a solid work ethic, it has nothing to do with coaching. Teague is a guy that was probably encouraged to come back for a second year, but Davis and MKG were going and his brother was already in the league, so he didn’t want to feel left behind and made the jump. Bledsoe has talked about how Cal encouraged him to return for his 2nd year, but Bled thought he was ready and chose to bet on himself. Obviously it worked out for him, but other guys have done the same thing and not worked out. Cal gives his players information, but they make their own decisions on entering the draft.

While I love what Cal has done here, I firmly believe he has a slightly different set of goals than we, as fans, do for the Kentucky Basketball Program.

His goals (as I see them reflected in his comments and approach) are to 1) Send as many kids to the NBA as fast as possible to make an insane amount of money (compared to the median household income in Kentucky of $43,400/year). 2) Win a lot of games. 3) Be in the discussion for the National Title

Our goals seem to be 1) Win the National Title. 2) Win a lot of games. 3) Hold on to our players as long as possible, then send them to the NBA when finished here, so that they can make unfathomable amounts of money.

It kind of feels like we are being used to make others incredibly wealthy and we get some of our goals met, but not the ones that are most important to us.

CPACAT: “We are getting used”. Your mistake here is acting like you matter. These kids are working on improving their life through there skill. You just happened to be interested in that skill and are allowed to participate in it. That mindset is rather arrogant. For some reason your opinion and goals supersedes these kids lives.

He loves his program and that can be a double edged sword.
I think the degree comments are off base as they are only so many years the players have potential to earn so why not try.
I am glad the coaching issue was mentioned though, probably a couple NCs were claimed by other programs due to a lack of tactics.
At least UK is back as one of the top programs again and going to Final Fours is more than enough.

You mean potentially playing overseas if the NBA doesn’t work out after receiving several million in the first 2-3 years? I’d guess at minimum 100K per year over 10-15 years plus sponsorships. So who knows really? That’s a pretty open-ended question.

Players in Europe and China can still make a few million dollars per season. Darius Miller just signed a 1 year 1.5 million deal to play in Germany. I’d take that any day as it’s well more than I make per year.

What DA doesn’t realize is that if Dakari stays 2 more years, he still will be a 7 footer who can’t jump. Why stick around and have his draft stock do nothing but fall? Take 2 players, same talent level, stats, etc, except one is a sophomore and one a senior, the NBA team is going to draft the sophomore every single time. As much, as a fan and UK grad, would love to see Dakari back at UK, he made the right decision for himself. If the NBA doesn’t work out, he will make his money in China or somewhere else doing what he loves. They will pay upper 6 figures for 7 footers who can’t jump.

Same goes for the Harrisons. These kids don’t want to be insurance salesmen or physical therapists. They want to play basketball. Having a degree, frankly, doesn’t mean much at all to them. If it falls through in the NBA, there are many opportunities for them to still make money playing basketball around the world. Why stick around in college when you’re only going to hurt your chances at making money? After all, that’s why they’re in college in the first place – to prepare them for their future careers. And each and every one of these guys’ future careers is on the basketball court.

The last time I checked there were ways to increasing jumping ability. Dakari did better last year after injured because I think he liked being the go to guy, he knew he wasn’t going to get yanked like he did in the Wisconsin game. Therefore I think by all means he could have helped his stock tremendously by coming back especially since we have not landed another big man other than Skal. It would more or less had been his and Alex’s team and although he would not have been a lottery pick next year a definite strong first rounder. Plus a long summer In the weight room working on those calves to get that vertical up to 10″ haha.

If he knows so much about coaching and it’s so easy, then why isn’t Anderson a coach?

Also, it’s easy to sit back and say that his team averaged so many more points, but scoring is down across college basketball as a whole, not just on our team. The game has changed.

The NBA places a premium on youth. This is why there is so much pressure on players to leave early. The Harrison twins returned for a second season and everyone acts like this makes them a failure somehow. Players almost have to leave early or it hurts their draft stock.

I’ve always liked DA, but his comments on this are way off base and if he really thought the BBN would back him up on this, then why is he saying this stuff on a Louisville radio show??? Why not come on KSR and talk to the BBN directly and then take some calls??? U of L players tend to stay four years, how is that working out for them???

Cal has flaws like all coaches. K lost in the first game two of three years even though Duke was over-seeded. Rupp went eight years without a FF and with Miss. St. dominating the SEC. Tubby got fed up with pandering to HS kids, particularly after Rondo. Pitino like Cal lost close huge games he should have won. It’s not that there isn’t something to Anderson’s comments, but they could be applied to any coach with a shift in the particulars. I don’t think he’s running players off either – with the exception of perhaps Wall. But if they want to go he’s helping them. Pitino does just the opposite. Behanan should have left after the title and had a bank account instead of what happened to him, even if its his fault. What has he got now?

    • J-Dub421
      5:25 pm April 29, 2015 Permalink

Harrell should have left after his sophomore year, he was projected as a lottery pick then. He’s not now. Rick convinced Harrell to stay another year, now he’s another year older and more flaws were exposed in his game. Same with Russ Smith, he would have gotten drafted much higher coming off the tile in 2013. He came back because Rick told Smith he’d teach him to play point guard and it would help his draft stock. Smith played next to no point guard and his draft stock fell.

I don’t agree with his statements on Cal pushing kids out the door but I agree that Cal has been out coached on several occasions, but that is the beauty of the game. We all know that Coach gives each individual player all the information he has and that individual makes their own decision on the matter. I truly believe Coach puts zero pressure on the players to either stay or go. He really does just passes the information and the kids, with the help of their parents makes the right decision.

  34. RC
    5:17 pm April 29, 2015 Permalink

WAKE UP people, DA is correct on all of this. Cal’s in-game coaching is suspect. He doesn’t watch game tape of the opposition for crying out loud! How is this even possible? He completely gagged up the Wisc game by going slow too early. We almost lost to ND because we had no idea how they were going to play us. Preparation might have helped.

He’s 100% correct about guys leaving too early who aren’t ready to contribute at the next level. They’ll have short careers. Teague, Lamb, Liggins, Orton are prime examples. NONE of them were ready and all are out of the league.

Cal seems to genuinely want our kids to leave en masse. It helps with recruiting I guess. Until this year evidently.

You can rip DA all you want but the man knows more about UK basketball, the NBA and making a career in basketball than anyone here does. I agree with him 100% of what he said.

I totally agree his coaching is suspect. Everything thing we do in life requires a plan. In no way should we “shoot from the hip” Its very lazy and in Coach’s case, has cost us when it matters most. But I believe in all honesty that he cares for these kids. He lets them makes the decision for themselves. Even if it is for better for for worst.

You wake up. Of course Cal watches game tape. Mostly Robic watches game tape. They just don’t show a lot of film to the players because they won’t remember it. Watching hours of film is a waste of time for a bunch of 18-20 year olds.

Liggins was a junior, and another year would not have helped his draft stock any. Lamb has always lacked a work ethic, he washed out all on his own and another year would not have improved his draft stock. Teague and Orton were both told they should come back and chose not to all on their own. Their decisions are on them.

DA is full of shit and just begging for attention – his time in the sun is over and he wants to run his mouth. Where does he get this “majority of UK fans agree with him?” I don’t agree with him. Plus he says “at the end of the year we don’t win a title – uhhh, did we not win the 2012 title Derek? Didn’t your team win ONLY 1 also?
I also disagree that coaches should “make their kids stay in school”. How do you “make a kid stay”? Do you tie him down? do you hold a gun to his head? Do you pay him? You can’t make a kid stay if he wants to leave. DA, lost a lot of my respect with this trash – catering and pandering to a hack like drew deener just to get attention. Times have changed DA – you’re an OLD MAN now; catch up to modern times and modern players. And quit running your yap on UL reTard radio – either that or just put on a chicken-head shirt and go root for them.

Maybe he didn’t talk about it at the correct type of format but I’m glad someone has the guts to speak up for a LOT of people who feel the same way. Some people feel we can’t question Cal’s methods because we’ll make him mad and he’ll go to the NBA. That’s not right. If BCG or even Tubby was still coach there would not be such silence. I remember before the UConn game last year I read where UL had beat them by so much and I went back and searched and found out they played a matchup zone. I even went so far to tweet asst coaches even though I knew they would not read it. We know Cal doesn’t like zone. Result UConn win. 2012 Kansas, even Cal said he almost started burning clock too early, Self says the just ran out of time. MKG says in timeout, “coach why wont you let us run”? Coach Joe B. Hall even asks Cal after the game why he started burning clock so soon.Result UK win. 2015 as typical we start burning clock with SEVEN mins left and a FOUR point lead. Result UK loss. 2 NC we lost because of coaching. If it was anyone else but Cal a lot more people would have said this. As good as the 96 team was one player left early for the NBA Antoine Walker. I don’t think it’s much of a secret we get the recruits we do because of Cal not because we are UK. Most have used UK as a stepping stone. If this nearly every year occurence was in exchange for national championships, not every year, but the years where we got to the point it was within our grasp like the last 2 it would be different but we are not. If fans were honest with themselves and Cal not a one of us like Succeed and Proceed. Heck even if we did win the NC every year it still would be hard to get used to. It isn’t Kentucky history or Kentucky basketball. Now it seems if this coming year is any indication that maybe we aren’t going to get all one year players anymore if so then it will be easier by losing a few but not most of the team. Whatever happened to if you aren’t a guaranteed first rounder come back to school? Remember Randolph Morris, didn’t get drafted, no agent, came back. Nazr being the last pick of the first round and thinking if he went second round it would show he made a big mistake. Now we have the twins, Dakari etc. that have a really good shot of going second round and maybe mid to late 2nd round. Is Cal, parents really doing these young men a service by allowing them to go pro? Any scout who was being honest would say that every play THIS year with the exception of KAT should have came back to school. The most dominate college player in my lifetime was Shaq. UK could never stop him, no team could, no one player. He stayed 3 years and was DOMINATE in college. Was WCS, Trey, Devin, Twins dominate? NO. People’s first inclination is to be against DA because they think he is attacking UK, he isn’t. He is just saying the truth. As I said before, if Tubby Sent these same 7 players to the draft when he was here fans would have wanted him to get a psych evaluation before they wanted his head on a platter. But because it’s Cal even the fans who are against stay silent because we don’t want to make him mad…he almost left last year. That’s bs one man should have that kind of control of a college basketball team. I say speak up and judge him like others and I’m saying we Lost the last 2 NC because of coaching. Not ineptitude but because of a coach being set in his ways. We were favorites against UConn and Wisconsin and I heard very few people blame Cal where once again if BCG ever would have gotten us in the position of last year and blew it by running clock with seven mins to go he’d been lucky to keep his job. Sorry so long but is my opinion. DA in my opinion speaks truth, he just hasn’t gone about it the right way. I think a lot of fans feel the same, again they keep quiet for fear of losing Cal, no coach is so great that he should cause us to stop speaking up for what we believe in as UK basketball fans.

Good gosh..step back off the ledge or just go ahead and jump and get it over with. 3/4 of your wasteful rant was based on Cal “allowing” players to go pro. Please get a grip. They are adults. They make their decisions. Cal provides them the info and they make the decision. Matt told a story on the radio about Archie and how he had him sit in his office while he called NBA GMs and asked them (not knowing Archie was in the office) about Archie. All of them said Archie needed to stay but he left anyway. Get a grip. It is their life and they are the ones who choose whether to leave or not.

Also, dominant is the word you were looking for. I realize it’s close to dominate but still not the right word. Just one of many in your incoherent, ignorant rant.

I agree with Derek 100% .I think the Harrison`s Johnson & booker & lyles & WC should of all came back!
My thought is why rush them away when if they do get hurt they at least have a education!

where do you get that Cal “rushes” them away” – what a load of crap. How do you tell Trey Lyles – a possible lottery pick that he needs to stay in school and risk injury? If you’d tell him that, then you’re just doing the kid wrong to pad your own record. If Booker and Lyles come back (like Russ Smith did) what good will come of it other than a few more wins for Cal? How would you feel if Booker and Lyles did come back and blew out their knees, or suffered a broken bone in their back like Rex did? Career shortened and maybe even over – cost them and their families millions of dollars? I guess that’s OK huh?

I agree with DA that Cal’s coaching has cost us a couple of championships, because it definitely has, but that’s a jerk move for DA to bluntly state that on public radio! I don’t agree with DA on Cal pushing out players, though. Cal lets the players and their families ultimately decide, which is the way it should be. I think some of them have made bad choices to leave, including Dakari this year, but it was their decision and that should not be thrown in Cal’s face. On the flip side, you have Rick Pitino costing players and their families a good amount of money by persuading them to return when they clearly aren’t going to improve their stock (Harrell, Russ Smith, etc.).

BS – Cal’s coaching has cost us a couple of championships??? What a load of crap. Without Cal we wouldn’t have been in 4 of the last 5 Final Fours with a chance to win it all. Name another coach at UK that has gotten us to 4 F4s in 5 years – please, name him. If Tubby had stayed, or Rick had stayed, or if we had ANY other coach maybe with the exception of coach K, we do not have 4 F4s in 5 years and thus do not have the chance to win it all. Speaking of K, he’s had as much talent as Cal and lost in the 1st round 2 years in a row.
Cal is a FANTASTIC recruiter and a VERY good coach. If Pitino is so great, why does Cal kick his ass EVERY year??
You people are not true UK fans if you can bad-mouth a coach that has given us the unbelievable run that Cal has given us.

Nowhere did I say that Pitino is a better coach than Cal, but come on Cal had a horrible game plan for Wisconsin. Well, he basically had no game plan. Our players looked lost and played scared on both sides of the ball for most of the game. A team that gets three straight shot clock violations is not well coached. Not saying Cal is a bad coach overall, but for that game he was terrible. He also made no offensive adjustments at all against WVU in 2010, and no defensive adjustments against UConn last year.

    6:48 pm April 29, 2015 Permalink

AGREED with DA. Coach Cal is the #1 reason why we did not go 40-0. The two main issues I have are. 1. FINAL 4 Against Wisky We were up 4 with 3 minutes to play and with 7 NBA PLAYERS ON YOUR ROSTER (and the #1 pick) you get manage to get 4 SHOT CLOCK VIOLATIONS IN A ROW? Duke the SAME exact position in the title game. Coach K and those guys pulled it out WHY? Coach K KNEW Wisky did not have any shot blocking, he puts Winslow at the four and spreads them out and everything opens up. More drives and more open 3 threes. This was the same EXACT way Duke beat them earlier in the year! Look at the film COACH! The blue print was in front of you! Instead we have this line up with Towns, WCS and Lyles in clogging up the lane making it easy for the slow footed Wisky players to defend. Should have put Trey at the 4 with Karl, Devin, Aaron and Tyler. I mean I love Willie, but he hurt us in that game. We needed more spacing and 3 point shooting.

      7:12 pm April 29, 2015 Permalink

I forgot to add, what is up with this revolving door crap Cal. Twins should have stayed. Dakari should have stayed. Trey should have stayed! They are losing millions by going in, understand this. Trey Lyles will go like 15-17 this year. Had he stayed and been featured he would go top 3-5 FOR SURE! He’s GOOD! So now he loses about 8 – 10 milly on that Rookie contract. Now we are finding out the hard way why they should stayed as fans. We are fighting over late recruiting scraps and one by one they are ALL saying NO. These other coaches have a lot of ammo in criticism on Cal and these elite recruits are listening.

Pretty bad judgement for Derek to appear on a Dirty Bird program and run down UK. Cal did not lose the UCONN game. Our guards were not quick enough to stop Shabazz. Cal slowing the ball down did not help but did not lose the Wisconsin game. Any player knows you do not go 3 times down the court and not get a shot off. Any player should have taken a shot to give us a chance. Cal could not shoot it. As to the draft issue, if my son was offered millions of dollars after playing one year I would support him and tell him to take it. Derek would to if he were honest. Can you imagine a student being offered $10 million dollars to work for Apple after finishing one year of college? We would all say take it!

You know, one thing that doesn’t get talked about in that Wisc game was Cal slowed it down for a reason. They were literally one of the most efficient offensive teams in the history of the game. It was written about all season…we had historic defense, they had historic offense. Giving them less possessions was what Cal opted to do (and by the way, whether we like it or not, what he always opts to do…even in all of the games we win). Had we scored on any of those 3 possessions that game would have looked completely different and the odds were definitely in our favor that we would score at least a few more baskets. We didn’t. They did. Game over. It sucks. It hurts. But let’s lay off Cal. Most of these armchair coaches couldn’t coach their way out of a wet paper bag yet think they know more than the guy heading up the largest program in the country.

Say what you want, but DA is 100% right ! As for the kids leaving early to make money & being ready; there needs to be a balance & the 2 year rule. In all honesty non of the kids from this year team are any where close to being ready. As far as Cal: Cal hard headness has cost him a lot of big games in big time situations. You would think by now after so many times he would learn, but for whatever reason Cal refuses. When you start piling up & helping to develop your own reputation for these kind of stupid decisions during close games, the odds & statistics sooner or later have to tell you you’re making the wrong decisions. This let the kids figure it out mentality is great on paper; what’s the back up plan when they obviously aren’t going to figure it out like during the Wisconsin game with 3 consecutive shot clock violations? There is no plan since for whatever reason Cal won’t or refuses to call a time out. Someone anyone call a time out & run a play!
