DeAndre Williams’ mentor on UK: “They think they can show up [late] to the dance and steal your girl”

Evansville Athletics

Evansville Athletics

Heading into the weekend, Evansville transfer DeAndre Williams announced his commitment to Memphis, choosing the Tigers over fellow finalists Arkansas, Baylor, and Kentucky.

Following the announcement, though, attention turned to the ongoing back-and-forth between Kentucky and Memphis fans and media members regarding UK’s true contact and interest heading into the home stretch of Williams’ recruitment.

Kentucky’s side argued John Calipari and the UK coaching staff backed off in Williams’ recruitment, while Memphis’ side argued it was a hard-fought win for Penny Hardaway and the Tiger coaching staff over the Wildcats.

Today, Williams’ former head coach and mentor Kenneth Roy joined the Jason & John Show in Memphis to sort through the rumors and clarify Kentucky’s side of things, where he threw multiple jabs at the UK’s recruiting tactics in the process.

He began with an analogy comparing Kentucky’s late arrival to Williams’ recruitment to a boy arriving late to a dance simply assuming he can steal someone else’s girl. Especially not the one and only Penny Hardaway’s girl.

“Once DeAndre hit the portal, [Hardaway] was there from the very beginning until the end. Kentucky came a week later. You have to look at it that way,” Roy said on the show. “They’re Kentucky, they think they can show up [late] to the dance and steal your girl. I guess they had another thing coming when it came to [recruiting against] Coach Hardaway. Coach Hardaway won’t [allow] no one stealing his girl.”

When asked about Kentucky potentially backing away from the table on Williams late in the recruiting process, Roy said those reports were incorrect, adding he had evidence the UK coaching staff was texting the versatile forward “until the very last day.”

“Do not believe any of the literature that Kentucky backed off. Kentucky didn’t back off no way, no shape, no form,” Williams’ mentor said. “DeAndre was receiving texts until the very last day about how much they wanted him. That’s just their spin that they’re putting on it. And it’s a shame they would have to do something like that knowing the stature of who Kentucky is. Hey, if they lost out, they lost out. They don’t need to spin it. We have evidence that they were in it right until the very end. I don’t know why they would do that. Are they ashamed in losing to Memphis?”

The frustrations also come from Kentucky failing to “play by the rules” laid out by Roy in Williams’ recruitment. From the start, the Evansville transfer’s mentor demanded all communication go through him, not Williams.

When Calipari and the UK staff began going straight to Williams and his mother – essentially cutting Roy out of the recruiting process – the coach and mentor was not happy.

“I look at it this way with Kentucky. Kentucky showed up a week later. We gave everybody the ground rules of how to play ball,” Roy said. “Kentucky, they started doing their own thing, dealing with DeAndre directly, not coming through me. … That played an important part, as well, because they didn’t play by the rules correctly. They thought they could go directly to DeAndre, they thought they could go directly to mom.”

Despite laying the “ground rules,” Roy spoke with Kentucky directly just one time.

“They only talked to me one time during the whole process. If I’m a part of the process, why do you think you can eliminate me and get the prize? That’s not going to happen like that. Why are you not talking to me? I’m a part of the situation. Kentucky, again, they didn’t play by the rules, they were in it right until the very end, and Memphis won out. That’s all I can say about that.”

At the end of the day, Hardaway’s pitch was “second-to-none,” something Williams and his camp couldn’t refuse.

“We went in and looked at all four programs, and we did the pros and the cons of each program. We did a process of elimination. What stood out, just head and shoulders above everyone, is how Coach Hardaway handled the recruiting process,” Roy said. “His recruiting process was second-to-none, and that’s what we loved about him and the program. I enjoyed the Zoom call we had with him and his coaching staff. He got to know us and who we are as individuals, between [DeAndre’s] mom, DeAndre, and myself. He wanted to show his genuine self, and that’s what took us from the beginning. … We couldn’t turn it down.”

They can…….sometimes. Alabama has done it to us in football. UK can do it in basketball

LOL, this dude is a 24 year old that hasn’t even started his junior season yet. Also, it’s funny for penny to run his mouth considering he doesn’t have a high school kid recruited for 2020 yet. I didn’t even know that until this stuff started. Also, I love when someone mentions they have proof but they don’t show any. I don’t mean it to make fun of the player because everyone is on their own timeline, but the more you read about him it’s clear why cal didn’t want him. A 24 year old going into his junior year, who didn’t want to compete for playing time with 18 year olds and wanted to go to a place where he could get up as many shots as possible, so he goes to a school with 0 high school recruits so there’s nothing in his way, all the while having a corrupt handler just trying to attach himself to the player. Also, this guy should dominate college basketball being 24 like he is. Imagine if an actual good player got to play college competition while 24. Heck Karl-Anthony Towns is just 24 and he’s been in the league how long, going on 5 years. He’d average 50 in college right now. And no offense, if you’re attached to someone like that hoping he’s your meal ticket that says a lot about the type of person you are. This is all just laughable, and the definition of punching down. Poor penny is likely to not have a job soon if he keeps “tearing up” the recruiting scene like he is and coaching them to underachieving seasons, while breaking NCAA rules and making players they hired him to get ineligible. Remember when there was a question how long Penny would be there until he undoubtedly ended up getting an nba job?

This mentor sounds like bad news. I know Coach Cal wants no part in dealing with “handlers”. He wants to deal with the player and the Mom. It’s a two way interview. That’s like having your handler show up for job interview on your behalf. This “mentor” thinks this kid is his golden ticket. That’s why we didn’t involve him and that’s why I’m sure Coach Cal is ok with this 24 year old opting to go to Memphis.

Thats the thing…Cal has always dealt with Mom and the kid but this is no kid. Like u said 24 year old MAN. This mentor is keeping his hand in the pot for the payday if it comes. Guess somebody else needed some “moving money”…he needs to grow a pair and not oet his ego get hurt…but i wouldnt be surprised if Penny isnt driving this narrative

Why does a 24 yr old need a “mentor” to run his life? Maybe if he was a 17 or 18 yr old high school kid, but at this point he should run his own life with possibly the help of trusted advisors. You see athletes continually get burned when they turn their finances and decisions over to Handlers/Mentors/Whatevers. This mentor is not helping this man grow and learn responsibility. He should be on the sidelines ready to assist, and not in front of Williams trying to block access to him. Otherwise, Williams is going to need a “mentor” when he is 44… well maybe that is his goal.

A classless reaction, first by Williams, and then by his former coach. The fact that Roy’s “rules” required everything to go through him suggests that he was acting more like an agent than a mentor. If he and Williams were so enamored by Memphis, why didn’t he commit to them on Mother’s Day, the day that Roy said a commitment would be forthcoming? He says he has “proof” that Kentucky was pursing Williams to the end. Have someone not associated with Kentucky’s program call him on that. Bottom line: Kentucky is better off without Williams and his trash-talking agent.

Didn’t Penny have the #1 recruiting class last season? Pretty sure he did. They were also 21-10 with a losing record on the road and barely above .500 in conference. Yeah I understand the Wiseman situation but even without him that class was still top 10. All that talent and we’re NIT BOUND….congrats!

I read the article about the handler that one of the posters linked. LOL, he fits right in with Penny. He paid for two recruits (just in the story) two move from other states to live in San Diego. The players where living in $2400 per month condos, one lived with his UNEMPLOYED mother in the condo. The one kids condo was paid for by a man in New York (the condo in San Diego), and he was associated with Roy as an assistant coach on a travel team Roy coached. Yeah, nothing to see here, just a star player and his unemployed mother moving from Oklahoma to Cali so his mother could find work, there are no jobs in Oklahoma. Kind of like Wiseman moving from Nashville to memphis and it only cost $12,000, that was a bargain.

The “mentor” wanting everything to go through him, describing the player as a prize, and praising Hardaway the way he did all smack of the kind of things that lead Cal to back off a recruit.

And many of those recruits later end up being named in documents surrounding scandals.
