On Monday night, Dan Dakich called Kentucky’s 115-69 win over Arizona State for ESPN, and today, he came on Kentucky Sports Radio and said it’s the best performance he’s covered during his broadcast career.
“I’m not so sure it wasn’t the best performance I’ve ever done a game of. I’m telling you, from start to finish, a couple of things were involved. Number one, and I said this on the broadcast, they have more talent, Kentucky did, but number two, and probably more important, they played harder than Arizona State did, which is a deadly combination. I mean, damn, if you’re going to have more talent and you’re gonna play hard enough. Number three, they played smarter. I’m not so sure — now, I haven’t done, I think I’ve done three Kentucky games — I’m not so sure, regardless of the talent level, that Kentucky has had, I’m not so sure I’ve ever seen a better performance of that in my broadcast career. Honest to God.”
“I think Arizona State came out to play, I mean, they were gonna try,” Dakich added. “That deal was over in two minutes.”
Who can beat Kentucky right now? According to Dakich, the only team with a shot is the one the Cats face in Las Vegas on December 17.
“I think North Carolina can give anyone problems. They can score with you, veteran guys,” Dakich said. “Carolina/Kentucky’s going to be a hell of game. In fact, I didn’t have a game on the 17th. I was hoping that game was in Rupp because I want to see that one as a fan because that’s going to be a hell of a game. That might be 300 points scored in that damn game between the two of them. And that would be the only team. I’ve watched Indiana, Indiana can’t play with them, not what I saw. I watched Louisville, Louisville can’t begin to play with them. Michigan State, maybe if Duke gets its team back. Kentucky’s going to have to have one of those West Virginia nights from the Boogie Cousins/Wall days to lose a game.”
Dakich added that he expects Kentucky’s shooting to improve over the year as Fox continues to develop along with Monk and Mulder. And don’t forget Derek Willis.
“I think [Derek] Willis is a damn pro, man, honest to God. And I’m watching him in person thinking, holy cow. And he’ll shoot the ball better.”
Top to bottom, on the court and off, Dakich left the Bahamas VERY impressed by the Cats.
“What I saw was, holy hell, this team is good. And tough. And really connected. They don’t have any egos, I’m watching them around the hotel, I was in the airport with them yesterday, just good dudes. Just dudes that are having fun. I talked to Cal for just a minute, not very long, you can tell he enjoys them too. It doesn’t sound like much, but it’s huge.”
Yes, it is. Listen to Dakich’s entire interview below, which includes him admitting he trolls the BBN on Twitter from time to time when he’s bored.
