Coordinator of SEC’s Men’s Basketball Officiating Announces Resignation

A new position in the SEC’s league office is now available.

Mark Whitehead, who has been the Coordinator of the SEC’s Men’s Basketball Officiating since 2016, has stepped down from his spot, according to a statement released earlier on Tuesday by SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey.

“I appreciate Mark’s work and his investment of time and effort the last four seasons to improve the SEC officiating program,” Sankey said in the release. “He was tireless in his dedication to the position and we will miss his enthusiasm for the sport of basketball that brought our officiating program to a new level.”

Before making the leap to Coordinator of Officiating, Whitehead had been a longtime basketball referee, at one point covering 22 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, including five Final Fours,  while working in the SEC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-12, American, Mountain West, Conference USA, and Missouri Valley conferences.

The SEC has stated they will immediately begin its search for a replacement.

He shouldn’t have time to resign he should have been fired long before now.

Thank you. When it comes to him doing his job I don’t see why he was allowed to keep it for this long. Pathetic

My friend also “stepped down” from our high school grocery store job after he threw broccoli at our manager. I think this is about the same thing. Making us the most foul called league in the NCAA was his broccoli. Hopefully we can now watch players actually play basketball instead of taking free throws.
