Colin Cowherd says UK fans bragging about All-Star weekend is “pathetic,” program’s history in NBA “embarrassing”

Oh, hey, look, Colin Cowherd’s saying stupid stuff about Kentucky players in the NBA again. After claiming that UK players in the NBA are “underwhelming” and “immature” on Friday, Cowherd aimed his fire at Kentucky fans and the program’s history to open his show today. After Kentucky players took over All-Star weekend and dominated the headlines, Cowherd said that any fan that brags about how a former player did in an all-star game is “pathetic.”

“You’re all jazzed up this weekend because you really did well in an all-star game. That’s pathetic. Can you imagine an Notre Dame fan or a USC or an Alabama football fan saying, did you hear our guy won a skills competition at the Pro Bowl? That’d be embarrassing. Your fanaticism for this weekend’s All-Star Game is embarrassing.”

After an odd comparison between the All-Star game and Adam Sandler movies, Cowherd came back to his point.

“If you’re bragging about an NBA All-Star weekend, you’re the NFL fan bragging about the Pro Bowl. You’re pathetic.”

Cowherd must have enjoyed the attention from the BBN over the weekend so much that he went a step further, calling Kentucky’s history of putting players in the NBA before the Calipari era “embarrassing.”

“If you took out Calipari, your history is embarrassing. Calipari has made it captivating because of John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Anthony Davis. I think Anthony Davis is — and by the way, Karl-Anthony Towns, that’s a Kentucky kid, I think eventually, he’ll be something too. But if you take Calipari out of the all-time Kentucky equation, it’s embarrassing when you compare it to the all-time great teams.”

I think Rajon Rondo, Tayshaun Prince, Antoine Walker, Walter McCarty, Ron Mercer, Tony Delk, Derek Anderson, Jamal Mashburn, Rex Chapman, Dan Issel, and Pat Riley might have something to say about that “embarrassing” history. Duke reference coming in 3…2…1…

“And Duke maybe doesn’t have a time of all-time greats, but they don’t give me head cases. They don’t give me busts,” Cowherd continued. “Kentucky underwhelms me, gives me head cases, gives me busts. Quit blaming the messenger. Look in the mirror.”

I don’t have the full clip of Cowherd’s comments yet, but here’s a portion of it (excuse me typing in the background).

UPDATE: Here’s the clip from Twitter…

he basically had his entire first article dismissed by the performances of the former cats this weekend. so now instead of taking his pill and moving on, he doubles down but this time on the fans themselves.

He is totally looking for clicks. if he had a single argument based on a relevant fact, he might not come off as so childish. but he doesn’t

His leaving ESPN was a win for them, I could never stand to listen to his radio show. No one has a higher opinion of him than he does. The term egomaniac comes to mind.

Colin Cowherd is the Milo yiannopoulos of the sports world. He says dumb shit so that he gets click and engagement via social media. You can help him go away but not clicking on his articles or listening to his half-baked talking segments.

There’s never been a Duke bust, or an underwhelming Duke product? I can only name one superstar from Duke in the league and that’s Irving.

This is the list he needs to have thrown at him again and again. I just tweeted it at him but he needs to get it from everyone.

Kentucky #2 all time in number of former players with NBA titles. #5 all time in number of titles won by UK players. Considering Ohio State and San Francisco are in top five, maybe this isn’t the best way to judge a program’s all time success level.

By the way, Duke’s not even in top thirty. Now that’s a topic worth devoting a segment to; not UK’s history.

Nice job on the link TED. I’m sure Cowherd will just dismiss it as meaningless because it doesn’t fit his argument. Facts are optional when it comes to his drivel. He’s got a hard on for Calipari over something in his past, might be for being called out on his bashing of John Wall over the years. But it’s obvious that he has an anti Kentucky agenda and is using it to further his “shock and awe” commentary. He has no credibility in the world of sports talk so he needs the clicks and the chatter.

It’s pitiful that a so called sports journalist or ‘personality’ has to talk about issues even THEY don’t believe, in order to get attention. It’s a sad commentary on society that today clicks are clicks regardless of what drives them. Forget this guy and don’t feed the beast.

So let me get this straight… We should feel ashamed for not having a ton of successful guys in the league, and now that we do have a ton of successful guys in the league, we should feel ashamed for being happy about their success.

That’s an argument without a fail state… Funny, for a guy who runs a radio talk show, he’s clearly not interested in debate. He just wants his opinions heard. There is nothing to debate in his statements, Cowherd is just preaching down at us plebs from his pulpit, telling us how to feel. He probably expects us to thank him for it too.

  14. To echo some others, do.not.react. You’re giving him what he wants, especially if you tweet him.

I don’t think any Kentucky fan is under the impression that winning ASG MVP is some career defining moment, but do you really expect us, as a fan base, to not even mention it? That would be very weird.
This man is clearly a Kentucky hater just like the rest of the country – but it’s such an ugly trait when you’re supposed to be reporting objectively. Generally, Kentucky does not produce “busts” in the the NBA. Sure, there are players who don’t do well and end up in the D-League but those were players who were shaky to begin with. MKG might be the only player who was projected to be an All-Star who turned out not to be – but he still starts on a playoff team. And head cases? Cowherd has had it out for John Wall literally since he put on a Kentucky uniform – the man is OBSESSED with John Wall. I’m not going to act like Demarcus isn’t a handful but that is one player out of nearly thirty. If Cowherd wants to selectively choose his stats (like lack of playoff appearances/wins when all of players are lottery picks and go straight to the bottom of the league) so be it, but one day he’s going to look around and have no one else to report on besides Kentucky players.

KSR should quit posting this guys antics. His new show is bombing, and we’re giving him ratings. Stop empowering him to do it more. Just as BBN is strong enough to increase someone’s ratings, we can boycott and kill someone’s ratings. We should intentionally ignore this clown and then watch him plummet.

Sam Bowie was basically crippled for the bulk of his professional career, and he was still pretty damn good. He just gets a bum wrap because he got drafted ahead of the greatest basketball player like… ever. Cowherd is just the Rush Limbaugh of sports. He says crazy stuff to infuse his ratings with haters.

  23. TJ
    2:46 pm February 20, 2017 Permalink

This is what happens when your ratings are embarrassingly low. There are a handful of fan bases that you can poke and stir up enough that it might give you a boost in the rankings. The argument is asinine. I think his whole thesis is garbage. Its not bragging, its taking pride in our guys beyond what they do here. I think it killing Cowherd to simply ‘not matter’ anymore.

The whole Duke illustration was asinine. If Danny Ferry and Josh McRobert’s hadn’t ridden the pine pony back in the day for title teams, they may not have gotten a single ring before Kyrie. Speaking of Kyrie, he’s pretty much carrying the torch for Duke in the NBA. Its nauseating to hear claims that Coach K and Self can do what Cal does. They can’t. They can recruit one-and-done’s and win, but they can’t develop them like Cal can. Kyrie is just about all Duke has now. Jabari was on his way, but another ACL injury could wreck him. Wiggins is a budding star for KU and if Embiid can stay healthy, then maybe, but they’re quickly challenging Duke for Bust U. ownership.

This is a desperate cry from Cowherd begging Calipari to make him relevant again, even if its for a moment.

How exactly are Duke’s one-and-dones doing in the NBA right now outside of Kyrie, by the way? Or Kansas. Or UNC. Or whoever you want. I’ll be waiting, Coward.

I mean, dude, 3 of the top (if not THE top 3) big men in the NBA are all from UK. The Phoenix Suns like Cats so much they keep drafting them. Even most of our “busts” are still on rosters or working in the D-League, and they all basically left college too early.

Also, if you’re gonna complain about headcases (presumably a knock on Cousins and maybe Rondo), maybe focus on the biggest punk in college basketball, Grayson Allen, who will probably get a shot in the NBA because he plays at Duke and puts up points. But Boogie, who is about to help the Pelicans dominate, apparently being the best big man in the game makes him worthless.

Easy research courtesy of Jon Scott’s Big Blue History – There are 20 NBA Champs with UK players. Granted none were Kareem or Michael on their teams, but saying “0” is a tad disingenuous.

“If” there was any truth to his crap I would take it as a compliment. We have been able to win over 2200 games with what he considers “disappointing” players. Apparently our coaching has been pretty darn good. We would have 3000 wins by now if we had any talent.
