Coach Cal and The Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches

Last night Coach Calipari joined Bob Hurley Sr., Ray Harper, and Allen Feldhaus, JR. to speak to the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches. Cal went up and spoke for forty minutes and covered a variety of topics. One thing is for sure, Cal has that swagger back. The Herald-Leader’s Jerry Tipton was at the event to cover some of the noteworthy tidbits:

I think we all know who the one guy that friend was referring to. If you don’t let’s just say it begins with an R and ends with an yan Harrow. While there was a lot of issue’s with the build of last year’s team the major issue seemed to be with the leadership of one guy and meant the difference between success and the NIT.

Along with Duke that study showed that ESPN mentions Kentucky more than any other college basketball team. Pretty funny that any other coach would even try to compete.

Coach Cal calling Ricky P out for being the liar he is and I love it. I thought resigning with a  12-22 record was how every coach wanted to go out.

What are you thoughts on Cal’s candid comments? It is pretty obvious Cal is back in top form.

I would guess that Cal was referring to Robert Morris being “one guy” not calling out Ryan Harrow.

I think its a little classless for KSR to keep mentioning Harrow by name. He is a college kid, and it didn’t work out and was probably a mistake on both sides to ever bring him here in the first place. But theres no need for the site to constantly mention his name and keep kicking a kid when he’s already down. We’ve moved on, no need to keep harping on the kid.

Seriously, the Harrow part was hard to read. First of all, I don’t really know what led you to believe anyone was referring to Harrow at all. They were obviously joking about Robert Morris. Also, this sentence: “I think we all know who the one guy that friend was referring to.” What??

The last time i looked, Basketball was a five man team sport. I will agree that harrow was the weakiest link in the U.K armor. I think it is unreasonable and petty on coach cal’s part to hang the Robert Morris Massacre solely on Ryan Harrow. If U.K is eliminated in the first or second round of the NCAA that might be blamed on poor floor leadership and a lack of talent. You get put out in the first round of the NOT INVITED TOURNMENT and that’s a coaching and preperation. You guys seem to forget WAY too easy that they were a top five recruiting class last year. OH and thanks again for reminding everyone that RICK PITINO is still the greatest coach to coach basketball in the state of KY. You guys have a great thing going dunno why you always have to refer to RICK. BUT LOVE IT !!!!!!!

In addition, I will also say that I don’t believe it is Cal’s style to talk poorly about any current or former player. I think he goes out of his way to avoid going down that road, just like he went out of his way to help Harrow return to a home state school to play ball this year. The reason is Ryan’s father, but I think we all know he had no future at UK. Cal has more class than to bash former players.

I actually I attended the event and the joke about the “one guy” was definitely referring to Robert Morris.

Cal also stated that Dakari Johnson has been a big surprise and that Willie Cauley-Stein is going to have to push harder. He also made it clear that having Randle is benefitting Poythress.

One thing that he mentioned that I never heard before was back in his first year, he brought John Wall into his office that January and told Wall to take as many of his teammates with him in the draft. He didn’t do that because he didn’t want them but to make John more of a leader and push his teammates. Wall came back and said multiple times that Eric Bledsoe just didn’t believe in himself as that type of player but we all know how that changed.

Listening to him talk about his players is like listening to a father talk about how proud he is of his own children.

I’d really love to know what kind of Magic Eight Ball this site uses to choose players to support and players to crap on constantly.Play hard, hang a banner, and be a class act on and off the court? That’s great, but just don’t make a joke about Cal. Member of one of the most beloved UK classes ever? Ok, but you better not question the work ethic of Cal’s class. (which turned out to be one of the least motivated teams I can ever remember wearing the blue and white) Harrow’s biggest crime against BBN? He wasn’t John Wall or Brandon Knight. Meanwhile Chargie Goodwin was a walking (or running… out of control) turnover machine who couldn’t finish *or* hit free throws, but he gets a pass, I guess because he got drafted, and we all know UK is all about the NBA these days, right? RIGHT?

Evidently here is the list of things you*can* do and *not* draw the ire of KSR writers:
    Choke your wife
    DUI
    Punch your girlfriend
    Drunk Driving
    Kick a homeless guy
    DWI
Sex acts with an underage girl

Why don’t anybody ever tell about Rick P ??? When he heard Tubby was out he reached out to several of the big money people. He ask what they thought a out him coming back ??? They said let them ask and see what they could do. All the while Mitch was Calling Billy D. They go back to Rick and say not a good time yet. But they will make a push with big money to the university. Saying they can make it happen but he needed to resign. He was worried he would lose both jobs so he said no. Then when Billy G was fired he really thought he was going to come back. Well he thought he was going to be the king again but Cal was the man that was on the other end of the phone. It killed old Rick but for some reason it’s never been told. Now it has. Rick is a great coach but his asst coach Ralph Willard was the man who taught Rick a lot about the impact of the 3 point line. 47. Reality Check
    5:00 pm September 21, 2013 Permalink

Fact: It took Loserville twenty-seven long-ass years to win a Title…from 1986 all the way until 2013…

Fact: During that same 27 year span (1986-2013), UK won 3 National Championships…with 3 different coaches!

Fact: It took 12 long-ass years for Rickety 77 Ford Pinto to win a National championship at the U of Smell…

Fact: It took Cal 2 years to reach a Final Four and 3 years to Win a Title at UK…

The sad part is that Loserville Tard fans win just one thing…one time…and…suddenly…out of nowhere…they become unbearable…screaming the mantra of their city’s most famous son Cassius Clay (Muhammed Ali) endlessly for all to hear…”I Am The GREATEST… Of ALL TIME!”

Fact Check Correction: No Loserville Tard. No you are not.

One more: Loserville wins one time…and suddenly all past and previous history becomes obsolete and irrelevant to them? Because now the Tards all say, “You need to quit livin’ in the past!”

OK. Question. Is that what you Tard fans have been doing these previous twenty-seven long-ass years?

Get real chicken meal. And yeah…that would be a KFC Yum Center chicken meal of course!

I can’t remember the last time I have seen so much BS being tossed around like it was candy. UK fans are known as the best in the land, thats true in traveling with the team, but as being Good Fans that show Good Sportsmanship towards everyone, , they are the worse in the world. Hell right here, they are cuttung a ex player like he was dirt, and second guessing the coach for even bring that ex player here. Wake the hell up , UK can not win every game, nor can it win the NCAA every damn year. The coach has told us many times, He’s a players coach, and will recruit that way. That means we get a 5 -6 new players every year, and could very easy lose 15 or more games. Because You never know what Freshmen will do in a real game sitting. So UK has a down year, big deal, UofL has one every 3 years, Duke has them every 4 years, N Carolina has them too..All teams do…so get the F**K over it..stop your whinning and belly aching about one damn season and one ex player…Its a new Year enjoy it, because if you keep up the bitching and whinning, Coach Cal could do what Tubby did, thats to tell UK to stick this place right up our ass……I would not blame him if he did, if he ever read this thread here on KSR………

#43 I know it’s hard for you to comprehend but not everyone that has something critical to say about KSR is a UofL fan. I’m a proud UK fan. And like #35, nice job of completely missing the point. I know that all programs have their blemishes. My point was that KSR writers pretty much turn a blind eye to the legal troubles a lot of former Cats have been in, but they’ve picked a handful of other upstanding Cats to vilify on here for the silliest of reasons.

I think they could rename this site Calipari Sports Radio as many writers on here seem to think the coach is bigger than the program. Don’t get me wrong, I like Cal and appreciate what he’s done for the program, but my loyalties are to the Program, not the Coach.

@56, after running your post through the Google gibberish translator, I do have one point to add… I don’t care if KSR covers any of the misconduct of former players. That wasn’t the point (way to miss it like the other two guys though) The point is, I think it is wrong of KSR to constantly trash a handful of good upstanding former players simply for the purpose of generating page hits.

KSR isn’t a fan page anymore. It’s a business. As such, their #1 priority isn’t posting UK news anymore, it’s generating revenue, and the first step in doing that is generating page hits. The best way to do that? Controversy. They’ve made the business decision that its in their best interest to put guys like Harrow and Woods and Shepherd through the ringer, despite having done nothing wrong. They *could* have chosen other players guilty of far worse transgressions than what any of those guys have done, but there isn’t any controversy in throwing a pedophile or wife-beater under the bus.

The point of my first post wasn’t to show what a bunch of former players had done. It was to show what guys on the KSR Hit List (like Woods and Harrow and Shepherd) *HAVEN’T* done.

And I wouldn’t care as much about KSR pushing their agenda if there wasn’t a significant portion of the fanbase that takes their every cue from this site. I’m proud of my school and their athletic endeavors and I don’t like it when anyone, be it an individual fan or a whole website, represents my school poorly. I think lately KSR is doing an increasingly poor job of representing my school, so I’m going to call them out on it.
