Children Believe the Earth is Flat, Thanks to Kyrie Irving

SB Nation

Kyrie Irving is an idiot.  Not because he doesn’t want to play with LeBron anymore.  It’s because he believes the Earth is flat.

At first, it was funny.  The guy who went to Duke for a year, one of the nation’s most prestigious universities, does not believe the Earth is round.  The jokes wrote themselves.  Now, it’s no longer funny.

Kyrie’s false beliefs have crept into the minds of the kids that revere him.  Middle school teacher Nick Gurol told NPR that no matter what he does, he can’t convince his students the Earth is round, thanks to Kyrie.

Science teachers aren’t likely to change a student’s misconceptions just by correcting them.

Gurol says his students got the idea of a flat planet from basketball star Kyrie Irving, who said as much on a podcast.

“And immediately I start to panic. How have I failed these kids so badly they think the Earth is flat just because a basketball player says it?” He says he tried reasoning with the students and showed them a video. Nothing worked.

“They think that I’m part of this larger conspiracy of being a round-Earther. That’s definitely hard for me because it feels like science isn’t real to them.”

If the pen is mightier than sword, words from celebrities are nuclear warheads.  In Kyrie’s case, a classroom globe doesn’t stand a chance.

Reminds me of the those who believe egomaniac sociopaths like Trump and deny global warming and science. Anything they don’t agree with is fake news. Facts no longer matter. It’s sad.

And like the Democrats denial of math – no problem at all doubling the National debt – just send the bill to our Grandchildren. It’s sad…

    • Wow, it’s usually at least the 2nd or 3rd comment before you global warming chicken littles lump people like me in with the flat earthers. There is plenty of evidence that global warming is a hoax. Former NASA scientist and current college professor:
      http://www.drroyspencer.com/

Don’t paint with a broad brush. Neither I or Dr. spencer believes the earth is flat.

“Climate change” is an evil conspiracy by the world’s scientific consensus to trick us into cleaning up our air and water for no good reason.”

Here’s why folks like you, Gettelfinger – those who can’t see any further than their own damn noses – are troubling:

Climate change may be real. It may not. I don’t know, and you don’t know.

Folks like yourself, however, who dismiss the claim, continue to go against the warnings of the scientific community (that means most, not some “Dr. Spencer”), and put our planet and every living thing on it at risk..

I, and others who put a little faith in the scientific consensus, would like to our inhabitants try to clean up our footprint on earth, and therefore don’t go around “rolling coal”, practice recycling, and shit like that.

Now, here’s the big problem you don’t seem to grasp:

      – If I’m right, we get to continue living happily on Earth.

      – If I’m wrong, we get to continue living happily on Earth.

      – If you’re right, we get to continue living happily on Earth.

      – But if you’re wrong, life on earth sucks for everyone and everything, cities will be flooded from rising oceans, animal ecosystems could collapse, our food sources will be endangered, and wars and famine will crumble our civilizations, and then you’d wish, deep down in your soul, that you were right….

So why not consider the fact that maybe – just maybe – you, and “Dr. Roy”, and Luether, and other shallow thinkers, might not know what the hell you’re talking about for once, and take a little precaution, think about what might e a greater good for all involved, instead of getting your jollies from pissing off liberals and nay-saying scientists….

Because again, lets be real: you don’t really know.

@ uk big board update nice. That’s as solid of an argument I’ve heard for either position.

    • Big Board, please read Mark Steyn’s latest book. In it he proves that the claim by the chicken littles that 96% of scientists (or whatever that number allegedly is) agree that man made global warming is going to kill us all is a false one. The “consensus” is not near the overwhelming nmber we are lead to believe by Al “Do as I say not as I do” Gore and his Hollywood hypocrite friends with their jets and limosines.

I have been told all my life that the earth is round. The argument seems logical. However, I have not been around the world so I cannot, from personal experience, guarantee that it actually is round. Of course, I have not been to the edge of the earth either so I can’t say for sure that it is flat. I tend to believe it is round but what if it is all a big hoax?

      4:57 pm July 29, 2017 Permalink

It’s not an argument. And why would NASA and the government lie about something like that? If it’s a hoax that means all the satellite and space shuttles are fake and the moon landing never happened. And who would benefit from this? It’s ridiculous for any educated person to think the earth is flat.

    • Eazy
      5:00 pm July 29, 2017 Permalink

Oh, and it would mean every other country lied about going to space and science isn’t true. It’s just ridiculous. There isn’t even a religious fairy tale to make people believe it’s flat.

    • 4everUKblue
      5:36 pm July 29, 2017 Permalink

Now that you mention it, there is plenty of evidence showing the moon landings were faked. Why has no one who has space walked ever shot a 360 in space, especially in this HD age when anything that can be filmed in HD will be. And show me a picture of a satellite that is actually a picture and not an artist rendering….Another great question is why has no one ever circumnavigated the earth north to south? Education is dependent on those who control what goes into the textbooks. Hitler said “Let me control the textbooks, and I will control the state.” There are many questions if you don’t just accept EVERYTHING you’re taught and see in mainstream media. Or you can just question nothing!

Joemoney….all I said was show me, I never said it didn’t exist. Can you show me? As for your lol…evidence may be a strong word but there are many questions about the moon landings that defy science and common sense if you bother to look. If you can prove the moon landings were not faked then by all means do so but if open your eyes and stop drinking the govt cool aid you might find there are many many unexplained and unanswered questions surrounding the moon landings oh and do some research on the creation of NASA. Do some research before come in with you lame ass lol.

On the moon landings being faked: a Chinese probe orbiting the moon has taken pictures of the Apollo landing sites, showing the Rover, it’s tracks, and all the equipment left behind. However, as usual, conspiracy theorist will yell fake or Photoshop. That or they’ll believe that millions of Americans and Chinese scientist and engineers are in on it.

The problem with believing the flat earth conspiracy is the severe amount of unearned respect you give the federal goverment. To think it could pull off a conspiracy that size, not to mention include all the governments of the world in it, is truely beyond adult reasoning. The same government that cant handle gathering enough intel before its last 2 major wars. The same governement that cant get healthcare correct. The same bleeping government that hasnt figured out how to keep its key infastructure together….

I’m not saying the earth is or is not round or flat but I challenge both sides to prove their argument beyond a shadow of a doubt. But here is a question. What the hell in going on in Antarctica that has 53 parties signing a treaty to keep us out? When have 53 parties agreed on anything? As of 2015, there are 53 states party to the treaty,[2] 29 of which, including all 12 original signatories to the treaty, have consultative (voting) status.[10] Consultative members include the seven nations that claim portions of Antarctica as national territory. The 46 non-claimant nations either do not recognize the claims of others, or have not stated their positions.

The best way to do handle a conspiracy theorist is to ask what evidence would it take to make them believe. Usually they get it and scream Photoshop or fake. At that point it’s over, nothing will convince them if anything outside their viewpoint.

Time to wake up people. Open your eyes and start asking some questions. Most of us here are educated people, many of us UK grads, and still we believe pretty much everything we are told. Just because something is written or believed by a majority doesn’t make it so. History has shown us this. It’s OK to go against the grain, to question what everyone else thinks is true. Without people who had a different view of their world there would be no progress, no innovation, just the same thought process. I’m not quite ready to proclaim the world is flat, but from what I’ve seen (me personally) and read, there’s a lot more scientific proof that supports flat earth than globe earth. Just take the time to do the research for yourself. Don’t just dismiss people as crazy, that’s what feeble minded people do to make their own world more comfortable, anything to keep them from thinking about what’s really going on. Make your own conclusions and think for yourself. The whole point is that we’ve all been lied to…about everything.
