Chairbacks are Coming to Rupp Arena

In the new lease between the University of Kentucky and Rupp Arena, the Lexington Center Corporation agrees to invest $15 million back into Rupp Arena.  One of the first additions will be chairbacks for the upper level guests between sections 228-234 and 211-217.

“We are trying to create things that go back to the fan experience,”said UK athletic director Mitch Barnhart. “We continue to try and put pieces to the the puzzle in place that make it a really special place to play.”

Chairbacks aren’t the only changes happening to Rupp.  Four “individual UK entertainment or club suites” will be added to provide pregame and postgame entertainment for fans.  The location is not finalized but they will likely be in the concourses.  All of the upgrades should be ready for the 2018-19 season.

In this agreement there are no planned changes for the outside or Rupp, but those could come when the convention center is renovated in a separate deal.

Will they lose seating if they put actual seats throughout the upper level? Chairbacks? Lol

Good move. If it has no back, it’s not really a chair. It’s only a glorified bleacher.

I think the whole side of a lower level should be straight bleacher sitting and be for students

If students would go, that would be a great idea. Sadly, we’d be stuck with a quarter of the lower level empty.

Why no chairs in the other sections? Come join me in section 223 and see what kind of “fan experience” you have when its impossible for anyone to walk in front of you without getting intimate.

That actually sounds like it could be a pretty fun fan experience…

I really don’t see how chairbacks are going to make it better. It’s going to more cramped when people walk into the rows.

    Will ticket prices go up?

Still haven’t heard how many seats will be lost – the current bleachers are not really wide enough per person to accommodate most butt sizes of current 2016 USA population. 🙂
