Cats blown out in Gainesville, 88-66

Kim Klement | USA Today

Saturday night’s game in the O Dome was a difficult one to watch for Kentucky fans as the Gators were in control from start to finish.

De’Aaron Fox played well after uncertainty around his status prior to tip-off, but outside of his 19 points, there wasn’t much, if anything, for the Wildcats to be proud of. It was a very embarrassing performance in the last shot at a significant win for the resume.

John Calipari’s postgame comments are on the way.

Until then, laugh at these stats and realize Kentucky is one Malik Monk jumper away from having lost four in a row.

    Unbelievable.

In my opinion BAM needs a lot of work. The team needs to practice shooting and running plays! Derrick Willis should start and stay on the floor for the majority of minutes. He should also do more shooting because he is a great 3 point shooter, good rebounder, and all around good player. Briscoe should do more of the baseline shooting like he used to do last year. I really miss WCS, KAT, Poythress, Lyles, Booker, Ulis, etc. LOL!

Plus they need to REBOUND, REBOUND, REBOUND! How do you let a team out rebound you by 25?

Everytime Willis makes a mistake Cal yanks him. Can’t get in the flow. But Briscoe can turn it over 8 times in a row and not get taken out.

Watching this game was very disappointing…but as I turned it off after being down 20….extremely frustrated….I began to wonder why I even give a crap.
Coach Cal makes more money in one year than 99%+ of us do in our lifetimes.
Each of these teenagers is also going to be a multi-millionaire before they can even legally buy alcohol.
Yet we all agonize over these defeats? I guess I am beginning to question the reason for my obsession and passion for UK basketball.
Truth be told, I am guessing they care a heck of a lot less about such a bad loss than most cat fans. Why should they? Sure, their draft stock may take a hit as some of these guys are exposed on the national stage. But they will still be drafted and know Cal has 6 more guys ready to take their place in a few months. All future NBA stars. Nothing else matters. Rinse and repeat.

Monk and Briscoe certainly didn’t seem to care as they were laughing it up on the bench during the last couple of minutes.

Agree. And the shot of Monk, Fox, Bam and Bricksoe laughing it up on the bench while we are down 20 with 2 minutes left is the proof. No way a kid in the past, remember those guys that would walk on glass barefoot to play for UK, would put up with a defeat like this, IT MATTERED to them. i just went online and cancelled my hotel reservations for Indy as I am not going to the tourney, 1st year in many. Well 1st since we did not make it and lost to RMU in NIT. Defense is coached and taught, Not happening. Caring about this proud program is built into you..Not happening.

I have been having the same mental conversation myself. At this point in life I don’t want to let a lot of things get to me. I think Malik Monk is a fantastic offensive player. But to watch him laughing on the bench when they are getting taken to the woodshed is frustrating. They should be upset. But, if I was going to start a job in a few months that was going to make me an instant millionaire, I guess I wouldn’t have too many worries either. This has been an odd basketball season this year. UK is not the first top 10 ranked team to get blown out on someone else’s homecourt. My biggest fear for them is that they don’t seem to be too bothered by it, and they are really playing their worst basketball of the season. Hopefully it is just the flu bug that has them playing so badly.

I hate losing, too, and I’ll be upset for a minute, but if you let the fact that some teenagers lost a game to another group of young men ruin your weekend or longer, you need to take a long look at your priorities.

It seemed like they started out good. It always bothers me to see them threatened to be taken off the floor over a minor mistake, to the point of them looking toward the bench to see if they are going to be taken out while playing… seems distracting. It also bothers me that certain players seem to be overlooked if they are not what some think are going to be “NBA material.”

They don’t even try to play defense. Once again Fox moved out of the way instead of helping when a UF player drove the lane. All he ever does is reach an arm out if he helps at all. Not just him, others like Monk have done the same. Can’t risk taking a charge and maybe getting hurt, would drop their draft position. I want the days of kids playing here because it is UK. Givens, Macy, Sir Winston, Mashburn, Ford, Chapman, Delk, Walker, Mercer, McCarty, Lock, Pelphrey, and the long list of others. Kids we got to know and love for 3 to 4 years. Kids that were proud to play FOR the University of Kentucky and BBN.

Losing by 22 is pretty bad…but the worst part is looking over at our bench with 2:00 left and seeing Monk, Briscoe, etc LAUGHING and having a big time. That is absolutely pathetic, unacceptable, and completely symptomatic of the main problem with this team: a lack of leadership. Let’s face it: there IS no leadership on this team. At some point, following Texas A&M game, we have lost our way. I would be interested to find out what happened. Enough with this “they are young kids” crap. That’s a cop out. Something has happened and it may be after we flame out in the early rounds of the tournament before we find out (if we find out).

      12:54 pm February 5, 2017 Permalink

WildcatBlue27 – you inferred that I was saying he cannot coach. I neither insinuated nor implied it. I know he CAN coach. What I am insinuating and implying is maybe he should spend less time with distractions such as book signings and podcasts, and more time adjusting (or, if you prefer, “tweaking”). Because to me (as BanjoBeliever notes), we fans have every right to voice an opinion. In my opinion, Cal decided early on that this team would overwhelm opponents with the running game, and would become an “elite” defensive team to create those opportunities. That’s what he based his strategy on this year. Well this team is clearly *not* an elite defensive team (and in my opinion is a below average defensive team), which has effectively eliminated the run and gun approach we annihilated lesser opponents with earlier in the year. It is my opinion that if Cal would just quit with the distractions already, and spend all of his energy focusing on how to right the ship, or adjust to what this team is, we might be better off. This team will not become elite defensively.

How many times has Cal had us ready for Mid March? 5 out of 7 times. 2 of those were with poorer performing teams than this. UF probably played their best game all year. Im telling every fan on here that now is not the time to be peaking. If in 3 weeks they are still playing like this then yes we are screwed. But the biggest problem with this team is that they havent identified a leader and their is not consistent effort. Hell, effort alone would have kept us in this game. Getting out rebounded like this was effort.

    • WeareBBN
      11:00 pm February 4, 2017 Permalink

This group does not give effort, that is not going to change. Defense is effort, rebounding is effort. Our helper on defense moves out of the way when someone drives, that is coaching. I don’t care who it is, SIT THEM. He won’t because he will lose out on the NBA recruits which is what he wants. I would rather watch the last 5 from the bench, at least they would care and try despite their talent gap. Is a shame that kids have that much talent and so little heart or care. Cal is lucky we are in the SEC and not the ACC or we would be home for the tourney.

    • jabky
      11:01 pm February 4, 2017 Permalink

I agree. Florida played lights out and for whatever reason, UK did not play with as much desire. Hopefully some it has to do with the bug that has been going through the team. At this point, Briscoe is not the one that should be the leader. That needs to be Fox, and he needs to step up and take it. He is the point guard and if this team is going to make any run in March, he needs to be barking the orders. Briscoe can help, but he needs to let Fox be the lead. Just my two cents.

  21. wildcat502
    10:55 pm February 4, 2017 Permalink

This is like watching an AAU game. We are not playing good defense, but Florida is making it look so because of their bad shot selection. Still no help defense or rotation. Rebounds are made out of hustle and we were out rebounded by 19 in the first half (out rebounded by that margin in a half, not the game…………………….a half). We need someone, besides Monk, to shoot outside and no one is stepping up consistently. We try to drive to the basket on every possession, which is ok, but kick it out on occasion.
Calipari needs to use his timeouts to teach his players and not waist it on screaming at the officials. And the players need to listen and quit their talking, since Cal only has about 20 seconds remaining.
The offense has been confused since Calipari said we need to run through Bam first. Maybe they should trash that and go back to the beginning. This will allow Bam to get offensive rebounds and putbacks, since he seems to be hustling.

  23. jabky
    10:56 pm February 4, 2017 Permalink

I don’t think tonight was because of Cal’s coaching. The team just didn’t have the heart and effort to get it done. Florida wanted it, Kentucky didn’t. 54 rebounds to 25 is the only evidence that needs to be shown to support that. I think at some point late in the game Cal just kind of gave up. He coached hard earlier in the game, but it was not doing any good.

    • WeareBBN
      11:04 pm February 4, 2017 Permalink

Then SIT them, it was obvious early on they did not care and really showed with about 2 minutes left. He is coach so send a message and let them watch the entire 2nd half. Oh wait he can’t do that cause he will lose other recruits that just want to show up for a year and leave while taking the spots of very good players that would be loyal here for 3-4 years.

Here’s what Adolf Rupp would do. Run sprints in practice until they puke. Then run walls after that. Don’t understand what could possibly be so funny over there on the bench at the end of the game. Not sure what is going on with this team as we have regressed, but laughing on the bench at the end of a game where you just got totally destroyed is not what you want to see of your team. That’s a tough pill for BBN to swallow and I hope someone associated with the team takes note of it

What a joke. We got guys like Monk laughing on the bench and through the handshaking line. Unbelievable. Monk’s attempt to play defense and rebound is actually worse than his display of concern about getting bombed by Florida. Way to show up Monk, you might want to wait at least one more second into the shot clock before jacking up another contested shot.

Monk is a good offensive player and I love his 3’s. Maybe he just shows his emotions differently than other people. Or maybe he is young and doesn’t think about it the same way as the fans. I agree that teams need to have heart and give it there very best! I loved the old days when we had players that stayed 3-4 years and gave it their all for their team.

You don’t see great competitors laughing at losing, much less getting blown out. They care and that is what drives them. He quite clearly doesn’t care in the slightest. I would rather watch lesser talented players who care than a guy who doesn’t care about a team loss or that they were playing better in December and maybe even November than they are now. Wherever he gets drafted he better hope it is on a garbage team with no proud veterans on it because they don’t play that.

Maybe we overreact? I understand this is the gold standard of college basketball. But look at the comments! The coach sucks! The guys laughing! Where do you stop? The simple fact is, most of you are not happy, even if we win a championship, you’ll still find something to complain about. That is much more telling of who you are than it is of what UK ball is. You should be happy we are this spoiled. That we have even been afforded that luxury. Can anyone give me a situation where we are better off than we are right now? Probably not. It stings to lose, and certainly is frustrating, I’m 35 and I was in love with UK by the time I was 4. Again, losing sucks, but to bad mouth the kids and the coach that put us in a situation where we can even be mad about losing is a bit silly. Maybe put this energy into your relationship with your kids, or find a hobby. I get frustrated, but I’ll never stop rooting for the CATS, no matter the outcome. If we are the best if the best, maybe our fans should start acting like it.

Everyone talking about draft positions need to stop. Everytime we lose their name slides down the board to with the loss. Being a stud and WINNING is what gets a player drafted high…..see the last 6 years.

It was their worst defeat of the year. This team will need to make a lot of improvement to make it to the Final Four.

But, the talent is there. I think it may be just finding the right combination. Tonight was just one of those nights. At first, it was easy to get discouraged by a couple of phantom calls by the referees. Then they seemed to slack off on defense. Then they were getting slaughtered on the boards. Everything just went downhill from there.

They will get another shot at them in Rupp. We will know then how far they have come and how far they have to go. Some of us are still with the team.

Monk is a once in a life time talent. He is unreal. But…I don’t like him. He should have gone to Arkansas. He would be putting up the same numbers and caring about wins and loses the same. Calipari has let him hijack this team. For the same reason Calipari makes excuses that his players are young, I’m going to hold him accountable for not having them ready to play. Come on Coach!!! you made your bed right!! Or is that too critical!!! Maybe instead of telling your fans how lucky we are to have this great talent on our team, you should tell these pre-madonna bitches how lucky they are they get to put on that jersey!!! It goes hand and hand. The guys that played hard at UK and endeared themselves to the fans, carried those same fans to the NBA with them and made them stars. Now we have guys that think they are just going to the league with all UK fans on their side. Monk could care less about Kentucky!! He is a 19′ jumper with 27 seconds left on the shot clock. I hope he gets drafted high to a terrible team and disappears!

Willis and Hawkins are the best this state had to offer. I love both those guys but how are they working out for us? Add three more guys that are not quite as good from the commonwealth as those two and I suppose we will have 3 National Championships in the past 4 years?

I have no answer for last night. It was painful and Inam rather glad the hospital was busy and I didn’t have time to watch or listen.
We need a REAL power forward consistently. Willis and Wenyen have both had simultaneous great games we just need it every game.

Instead of being a HOF Coach, our Coach has turned into one
POMPOUS ARROGANT BUTT, its no wonder the players were laughing on the bench, its the only time they can get away from the constant hollering and screaming of the supposedly Coach. If he would coach and worry about the players now, instead of playing the Super Butt and acting as if it’s his coaching that are getting them to the higher level, the team would be better and get their confidence back, face it Coach Cal, these KIDS are all SUPER when they enroll, they could go to any school and play ONE year and go to the PRO’s so face facts and do what you are getting paid top do, thats coach the team, win games and get THE CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHY at the end of the season

Oh my god, you are all whining about a kid cracking a smile on the bench? They had already accepted the loss, the game is over. They are all disappointed about it. “Maybe we should have shot the ball underhanded”… I would have laughed at that too. Who knows what was said, but for you to come here and criticize any of these kids who work their butt off, you are all totally out of line. You’re not in their position and I’m sure you have taken it all way out of context. These kids care about this team and care about winning.

We were outplayed and outcoached from the first minute and have alot to work on. But, I for one support this team through the good and the bad and I’m not gonna turn on any of the players or the coaches and come on here and start griping like a little bitch. Yall are petty as hell to be acting like that. I’m looking forward to revenge when Florida comes to Rupp and hopefully this will be used as a learning experience and a source of motivation.

      Thank you….good post.
      I might also point out
      #2 Baylor lost
      #3 Kansas lost
      #5 Arizona lost
      #7 W Virginia lost
      #9 Virginia lost.
      It happens…
Some of these people need to go support Gonzaga…they haven’t lost a game.
They could catch the Zags on ESPN most nights from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m.

People griping about coach cal and the players he brings in…don’t understand college basketball in the slightest. Is there an effort and focus issue with this team, absolutely. Do they refuse to play any semblance of defense, without question. Is their shot selection ridiculous, most certainly. Was it in bad form to be yucking it up on the bench, of course. Should briscoe and his leg tats be limited to 10 minutes a game, probably. Doesn’t change the fact that “one and done” is the most effective way to win collegiate basketball games. If you want mediocrity, by all means let’s find some down home Kentucky boys to play terrible basketball for 4 straight years. You people are clueless. This team has time to turn this season around. They can improve and fix their flaws. But even if they don’t, this team would be an anomaly in coach cals tenure. NOW GET OFF MY LAWN!!!

I think tonight was great. Some of these kids will change their families lives later this year with the draft. After all, isn’t this what it’s all about with Cal?
