Remember Stefan Moody? You should. If not for his cramps in overtime last year, Ole Miss might’ve stolen one from the unbeaten Wildcats in Rupp Arena.
Moody scored 25 points in the early January meeting last season, connecting on 8-of-13 from the field and 5-of-7 three-point tries.
John Calipari said afterward, “If Moody doesn’t cramp up, we probably lose the game. I mean he was just ridiculous. We couldn’t do anything with him.”
Kentucky extended its defense to limit Ole Miss’ outside shooting, but Moody was able to use his quickness to create shots, although it didn’t really matter what Kentucky’s defense was doing. Moody was pulling from DEEP and busting shots in the UK defenders’ eyes whenever the situation called for it.
His head coach, Andy Kennedy, compared him to Marshall Henderson in the postgame press conference. “Thank God only a little bit,” Kennedy joked.
This season, Moody leads the SEC in scoring at 23.8 points per game. He is the Rebels’ best outside shooter at 36 percent with over seven attempts each game. I have no doubt his hot hand will pick up right where it left off one year ago, because he’s just one of those guys who craves the challenge of playing in an environment like Rupp Arena.
Maybe Kentucky can contain him this season. The Cats can’t rely on cramps to bail them out once again.
