Calipari’s Crazy Idea for the SEC Tournament

john-calipari1

John Calipari has always pushed the boundaries, creating critics along the way.  His newest idea is one that only he could come up with.

According to Jon Solomon of CBS, at the SEC Meetings in Destin Coach Cal proposed that instead of a postseason SEC Tournament, they make it a preseason tournament.  There is some logic behind the crazy idea.  Since the tournament doesn’t affect seeding for the NCAA Tournament, you can promote the conference if you play it early in the year.

Unsurprisingly, it didn’t go over well with the other coaches.  But is it feasible?  It would be difficult to create excitement from SEC schools during college football season, but I think it’s safe to say that Kentucky fans will show up in Nashville no matter when the tournament is being played.

    Love it! Brilliant…

Would give another SEC school better odds of beating us (being early in the season… and we will have a majority of green Freshmen) and allow the automatic bid to be ‘up for grabs.’

It would also make the regular season games matter more than they do now.

Seriously, the SEC tourny (or any conference tourny) is all about perspective (of what team you play/root for).

If your KY fans, you hope we win but doing so doesn’t help our seeding positively (but it can hurt or seeding negatively if we don’t).

If your a fan of any other program the tourny is your big shot to get in the NCAA tourny. You lose and your out. You win and you’re in… but it’s a real stretch… as it’s definitely going to be harder to beat the favorite (KY) after they had a whole season to get tuned up.

If the tourny is in the beginning of the season… and you’re another team other than KY, if you lose you’re not out of the NCAA tourny.

If your Kentucky… and you lose… so what, it will have no effect 4 months later and the regular season games are what will matter (what we want).

It’s actually win/win for all programs.

Automatic bids need to go to the Power 5 regular season and conference tournament champions. If the same team wins both, the team that finished second in the regular season gets the second bid.

And the tournament needs to stay in the post season. If Selection Sunday afternoon championship games don’t impact seeding then all tournaments need to finish on Saturday. I’m sure CBS would welcome the chance to turn Selection Sunday into a full day of programming. They practically did it this year anyway.

i don’t get it… but Cal is a genius. So I am OK with it.

This was a tongue-in-cheek dig from Cal about the lack of apparent weight the SEC tourney seems to possess.

Would the winner of the tournament get the automatic bid? I think it would be interesting, but there’s no way they could have it in November with football still going on. It would have to be in 2nd or 3rd weekend in December or January after football is over.

The SEC tournament needs to end on Saturday and the fact that Texas A&M got a higher seed than us is the perfect example why it does.

Since there is no way to crown a legitimate regular season champion anymore because of imbalanced scheduling, a tourney at the end is the only way to pick a recognizable champion. Remember that last year’s SEC regular season was essentially decided by a schedule that had us playing at A&M. Who wants a bunch of schedule makers to be the primary factor in picking a champion?

As for a “preseason” tournament, I have said for years that KY, UC, Xavier ,Ohio State, Indiana and Louisville should host a preseason tourney each year a rotate locations each year. WOW could you image how HOT those tickets would be! GO CATS!!!

Can’t have a preseason tourney with multiple teams from the same conference. So IU and OSU … one has to go

No. Why should KY play any of those teams? We gain zero and they gain everything.

But then… you think those would be hot tickets. Every thought of swimming in the Ohio River at night. You should do it.

League tournaments are stupid. I say scotch them all and expand the NCAA tournament to 128

It’s not a bad idea. The only problem is that it mainly benefits UK. On that basis, there’s no way other coaches are going to go for it. It benefits UK because we want to get the SEC tourney out of the way and focus on the real upcoming tournament, etc. But the other teams, mainly those who are perennially on the bubble or not in, need the “win or go home” pressure to make any kind of push to win the SEC tournament. In other words, if you put it early in the season, it takes the “do or die” pressure off the lesser teams, and they stand even less of a chance to win the tourney.

It’s a stupid idea. I would rather Cal play the reserves in the tourney and go home early. He hates it anyway.
