Calipari went on long rant in defense of fellow coaches Fox, Gottfried

John Calipari used his postgame press conference to go on a long rant in support of Georgia head coach Mark Fox for the job he has done with the Bulldogs throughout so many close, heartbreaking games.

The rant then turned to Mark Gottfried, who was fired from NC State earlier this week, as Calipari said, “We’re firing coaches in midseason… Are you shitting me?”

He concluded it with, “FAKE NEWS!!!! I’m just kidding.”

Have to agree with him…never been a fan of firing coaches in midseason.
Still haven’t got used to the Les MIles thing; LSU fired a coach with his record…unbelievable.
And his team was good last year…at least U of L thought so.

I love Cal’s comments in his post game presser, “I’m stepping back, it’s on you now”. I don’t think so pal! You’re being paid millions and these young guys obviously don’t know how to play defense, don’t know how to defend the pick and roll, don’t know how to make winning plays, don’t know how to defend without fouling, don’t know when to take high percentage shots, don’t have an out of bounds play, don’t have the killer instinct to always put the game away with a big lead. I’d say you’ve got a hell of a lot of coaching to do to get this team ready for a deep run in March! I don’t want to hear the words coming out of your mouth, “it’s on you now”. Coach Cal, regardless of what you think, “it’s on you, dude” !

ANY road win in conference is a good win, but what we see defensively on ball screens has been going on for 25+ games, because that apparently is the way Cal wants it played. He seems to believe that Willis/Bam/Gabriel and occasionally Humphries can stay with smaller quicker players, and if needed Fox/Monk/Briscoe/Hawkins can defend/rebound down low vs. guys 4-6 inches taller and 25-30 lbs. heavier. With about 1:30 left in the game UK aggressively tried to make Frazier give up the ball. First 38 minutes he looked like a lottery pick! Ga. even ran a staggered screen late to Bam, after his initial switch,(KNOWING FULL WELL HE WOULD) to once again hang Willis out to dry with the much quicker Frazier. It is what it is, until UK coaches admit otherwise. Clutch FT shooting down the stretch was big. Wonder why we rarely see 6-9, 6-10 guys guarding Fox 20+ feet away from the basket?

Oh by the way, on topic of coaching positions………Any top tier program, meaning consistently staying at least in top 30 nationally…..want to take a flier on Johnny Jones of LSU or Gottfried of N.C. State? Boosters across the country, here is your chance!!………ah, probably not……

It is a business and the schools can fire when they want. What about football coaches that leave prior to the bowl game to take another job, there are lots of those. Basketball coaches leave after getting commits and telling kids they will be there. It is big money business so Cal needs to shut up and coach his team, that is what UK pays him to do, remember try to get kids drafted is the #1 priority.

A lot of fans of other teams want what UK, Duke, Kansas, and other top 25 teams have. I don’t blame the fans of these poor teams like Georgia, N.CState, Ohio State and other poor performing teams wanting better coaches. Bravo for Calipari and Izzo for standing up for other coaches, however these poor performing coaches are being paid to produce.

bluegrasstu, much truth to what you said. NC State and Ohio State have both had NBA type players on the roster last few years….not as many as UK/Duke, but still you would think that decent NCAA tournament runs would follow. Georgia and Mark Fox haven’t been so fortunate. I believe Fox does a pretty good job with the talent of players he can get at Georgia. If he had a Dominique Wilkins, Vern Fleming, Terry Fair, etc. from years past, pretty sure he too would be thought of as solid coach. Those considered “great” coaches usually have superior players….pretty much goes hand in hand. RECRUITING is everything at college level, and if schools can attract upper level talent, those are the ones that usually appear deep in March. If Avery Johnson. at Bama, and Fox at Ga. can convince top in state kids to stay in state, both of those teams will be hard to handle in coming years. UK/Duke/Kansas/N.C. have the luxury of national recruiting appeal….HUGE advantage!
