Calipari told Quickley he misses him already. “We can’t make any shots!”

Lost in all of the excitement of three new Kentucky draft picks Wednesday night, John Calipari made a brief, concerning comment about the current team while congratulating Immanuel Quickley on being a first-round selection.

“I miss him already,” Calipari said into his phone with Quickley and his family on the other end. “We can’t make any shots!”

Quickley reminded his old coach that he was unable to make a shot early in his SEC Player of the Year sophomore campaign, urging Cal to give his new group some time. Cal wasn’t having it. He replied, “That’s all I want to hear… give them some time.”

Watch it in the clip below but don’t dwell on it too much because the rest of the video is so much better.

That is exactly what a great coach and mentor looks like. Exactly.

He complains that no one can hit shots but he’s said several times that Mintz hits often, yet he puts him on the 2nd team…

Pretty sure “we can’t make shots” comment is a thousand percent tongue and cheek. Cal says this every year, pretty much all year too. It is his modus operandi to always, always, always play his teams down, especially before the season.

nocode, I hope your first statement is right. As for your 2nd statement, he says it every year because most years it’s true.

If he says he has no shooters every year then why do we have 3 times more players in the NBA than all other schools combined??? Booker, Herro, Murray, etc.. were lights out shooters and zero titles since 2012…

If memory serves me correctly, all those mentioned trailed off later in the year. Booker absolutely went stone cold. He couldn’t hit anything late and that’s one reason we lost in the Final Four. Having said that though, that happens. I lay that loss mostly on Cal’s take the foot off the gas too early mentality. He almost cost us both FF games in 2012 doing that after we had blown out both teams in the first half.
