John Calipari got into a New York state of mind this afternoon by calling into Mike Francesa’s show to talk about the Cats and whatever else their hearts desired, which made for some great radio. Calipari hit most of his usual talking points — Isaiah Briscoe is great, Jamal Murray could be really great, this is the most inexperienced team in the country, yada yada — but he had a few new things to say about Skal Labissiere.
After comparing Skal to Marcus Camby yet again, Cal said Skal’s been really good in practice the past few days.
“I’m just telling him, ‘man, you’ve gotta stay in the moment, let’s get better day to day.’ He was great in practice yesterday, really good today. We had a great practice and after the practice I said ‘You know we really were good today. Why is that?’ ‘Skal.’ That’s why we were good because he was good. So I looked at him and said ‘You don’t have to be great, you just can’t be God awful.”
Some — not this blogger, of course — might say that’s a pretty good motto to have in life in general.
“One of the nicest kids, probably too nice. I’m trying to get him be mad at me or mean and it kind of hurts him,” Cal added.
I’ll share some more of Cal’s comments with Francesa throughout the afternoon.
