Calipari: “They were just better than us”

John Calipari called it like he saw it, like we all saw it: Duke was the better team Tuesday night.

They were just better than us,” Calipari said after the game. “I told them I got out-coached, you guys got outplayed. We’ll watch the tape and move on.”

Cal admitted he thought his team would have an advantage on the glass, but that was not the case. Duke out-rebounded Kentucky, 38-37, and beat the Wildcats to every loose ball, he noted. Cal was also very impressed by the turnover margin. Duke had only four turnovers in the entire game.

“They’re a very good team,” he said of the Blue Devils. “If they play like that, they’re not losing many, if that’s who they are.”

As for Kentucky, Calipari said, “We all gotta do some soul-searching here. Let’s figure this out.”

This may be one of the worst defensive teams we’ve had that is still a pretty good team. Teams with vets and grown-ass men will probably whip us…namely Tennessee and Auburn. I don’t see UK winning a title, nor the SEC, with this soft-as-Charmin bunch. Pretty good players and some good shooters, but soft….especially inside. Amazing how easily they set screens, we switched, and they drove right by our guys….over and over. Better use a zone Cal to have a shot this year.

On a few occasions in the second half we actually moved our feet and prevented straight line drives and these were the results:

      1) Zion bumped into the defender(s) who had position, and walked a couple times. No call. I liked when we stepped in front of him and made him try to spin or abort his straight line drive. But it only occurred a FEW times the entire game.
      2) Esp RJ Barrett would make a really difficult shot falling down, almost stumbling because our D, positionally speaking, was pretty good.

Look, the problem is that RJ is unguardable. He’d be a starter on virtually every NBA team right now, AND he’d be unstoppable in the NBA. He’s like King James or KD, in that he is bigger than his defender and doesn’t have to worry about getting blocked. Same with Zion.

Virtually impossible to guard. Somebody who COULD guard either one is Jared Vanderbilt. But he’s gone.

The only hope to stopping James or Durant is to hope they just are missing shots, or maybe get them in foul trouble.

I liked Zion’s and RJ’s competitive nature. They played like THEY had a chip on their shoulders.

We were wearing those cute, little pink hats. What do you call those, p**** hats?

Two players I’d say weren’t donning those hats — Travis and Johnson.

The rest of the team didn’t come to play. Hagans doesn’t understand “smart” defense. He gambles, let’s his man drive by him. Tyler took some crazy shots, but I liked his effort. Nick just doesn’t have a good b-ball IQ yet. He doesn’t understand the game yet. Quickley was a non factor. EJ played like it was his first collegiate game, nervous. He just needs to settle down. Green? Expected 14 points, and 5 assists from him, but he was invisible. PJ reverted to his hot/cold self from last year, though he could stay out of foul trouble.

I thought the refs were bad. I’d grade them at a C minus.

But the bottom line for Duke is that RJ is so skilled and big right now, that he would literally DOMINATE NBA games right now. If you can stay in front of RJ, then the refs must call the charge or push off by RJ. If the refs don’t do their job and allow RJ to bully himself, as the refs allowed WI to bully their way to the basket in our 39th game, then RJ is unstoppable. What’s gonna happen is the defender or RJ will be on the bench with foul trouble. If it’s RJ in foul trouble, then he’ll stop bullying his way to the basket, and start settling for jumpers. The problem is, like Durant, he can hit.

Everything you said was on the money. The real takeaway is that Duke is incredible. 2 guys that will be NBA all-stars one day and another that starts from day 1. UK is unfortunately worse than we thought. Top 10 at best and will be lucky to win the SEC.

Coach K proved tonight why he is the best and why he gets the recruits that Calipari used to get. Truly ask yourself, if you weren’t a Kentucky fan and you were a big time high school prospect, would you want to play for Coach K or Cal? That’s a no brainer to me. I’m in no way, shape, or form giving up. However, tonight was a big wake up call.

A Bobby Knight protege and pal who models his whole philosophy after the chair throwing, racist, toilet paper coach? A snarling curmudgeon who’s made disparaging comments about 18 year old kids not on his team in front of a national audience? Or a coach who treats each player like actual family, whose wife cooks for them, who has them over regularly to his house? You’re right, it is an easy choice.

I agree with timbo, I still choose a coach with integrity, so I still choose Cal over any other coach. K has zero integrity, but he has the best team money can buy and nothing will ever be done about it.

Say that out loud to any fan base in the country, other than UK, and you’ll get laughed out of the building. Coach K has been dominant 10 years before Cal, and is rocking his head on and off the court. Say what you will, Coach K has significantly less OAD since Cal has been here, and won TWO national championships during 2 years UK was the favorite. He’s 2-1 against Cal head to head, and K runs the recruiting circuit. He’s the HC of Team USA, and never lost a game. Cal was destroyed by RJ Barrett as USA U19 coach, and still couldn’t slow him down a year later. UK is the #2 program in America, but the distance is getting worse every year

I have a nice title for this years team. The forgettables or how about the quitters that’s better! This team and coach better bring it. means something to wear that jersey to this state! Quitting ain’t an option! You think we became the best college basketball team like this! I trust them to figure it out! It was tough but you can’t quit and they did! I pray something burns inside to not quit. Losing is ok but quitting???duke was on fire and we didn’t extinguish shit! Foul jump come together move the ball sweet Jesus Nothing!!Weak weak weak! I could go on! but I have to remember we have football this week! Hopefully everything can get turned around!

Yeah cause he paid to get all 3 of the top players out of high school. Those 3 players whooped our team. If Zion had gone to Clemson like everyone thought he would have we win this game easily. His sudden change is cause he got paid.

I completely agree but the saint of college basketball and everyone’s favorite coach will never get hit for anything. The NCAA has no balls when it comes to Duke or Carolina either. If it was Kentucky they would have had investigators on it right after Zion committed trying to find something.

Really, this happened because some kids were paid to play there???? No, it happened because UK played uninspired again and believes they’re great just walking on the court. Grown men took kids to the woodshed. Everyone realized Davis & MKG were different than the rest of their class regardless of age….well Duke has 3 that are just different. They were bigger, faster, and definitely stronger….add in they wanted it more and you have the result. Reid is the ONLY grown man we have. Really saddened by PJ play tonight, and Richards not in the starting lineup say it all to me.

We just aren’t as good as we thought in the Bahamas. When Pros don’t play defense in an exhibition game you get the result we saw…..

Holy shit people it’s one game. You are awful fans. You know what, when we get it together in February and start clicking, just stay away. I don’t give two shits about what happens in a bullshit made-for-tv matchup in the middle of the night the first Tuesday in November, and you shouldn’t either.
Don’t give Cal a pass, but don’t crucify him over one early season game.

First of all, I was sickened to watch a UK team get beat up like that last night. It is inexcusable for a team with all the resources you need to get embarrassed like this. The most discouraging thing was the lack of effort and energy most the players showed. But seriously why are people giving up on Cal all the sudden. We see time and time again that his teams improve drastically over November and December. He will get them were they need to be. Stop with the doom and gloom. If these 2 teams play again in the tourney I promise it will be a different story. We may lose but we would not get blown out. I say let Cal do his thing, like he has always done, and we will be just fine!!!

Today, Duke is better than us.
