Calipari says UK reverted because they didn’t scrimmage in practice

Why did Kentucky revert to bad habits vs. Florida? John Calipari didn’t make them scrimmage in practice last week, which led to a lackluster effort in Gainesville.

“I was feeling good until we went down to Florida and got rocked,” Cal said on this morning’s SEC Coaches Teleconference. “I didn’t scrimmage the week before Florida. Basically, it was a quick turnaround. Prior to that, we were scrimmaging every chance we could. I made a decision and every once in a while, my decisions aren’t right. That doesn’t happen often, but this is probably one of them. It took an edge off some guys we needed to compete.”

Calipari said he was disappointed to see his players go back to “exchanging baskets” like they did in high school vs. being aggressive on every play like they were during their winning streak.

“If you’re in that mode, normally you’re going to get beat.”

More scrimmaging in practice this week, please.

I dont mean to steal a line from AI, but seriously, its March and were talking about practice? Not a game, but practice…. This doesn’t bode well for our young cats im afraid….

So they aren’t suppose to practice anymore? This comment is dumb

If You would actually use your brain and think, this late in the season and not scrimmaging in practice is no longer an excuse. There’s no time left to worry because if you’re worried about a scrimmage this late, it’s over. This isn’t January anymore, it’s march. Times not on our side anymore. These guys are what they are, that’s not bashing just stating the obviously ?

This is no suprise. Cal is wayyyyy too comfortable lately. Making all that bread and he knows or thinks he is a god around here. Thats the problem. He should be scrutinized way more.

I think he didn’t scrimmage on purpose so he would have that as his fallback to prove a point to the players that you can’t play HS basketball against experienced college teams. Good lesson and puts the blame on himself rather than those too young to fully accept it.

This is a group of good athletes, but not better than average basketball players. Too, their Mothers probably really like them. I agree, not sure why we are talking about practices at this point.

So Cal reverted; not the players.

Cal’s given us a ton of excuses this season. He’s taken most, of not all, the blame as well. At some point, the players are just going to have to play better. It’s that simple. It’s March. There should be no more excuses. No more road games. BBN will be there for them at every game. No more excuses.

I think he is clueless on how to get these guys to play consistently, which is why he keeps changing things. Considering that Richards and Diallo are still starting over JV and PJ.

Soo true. I dont get it. Richards and Diallo have to sit. Gabriel also. Lets play a game with our best players starting barring foul trouble and play 35-36 min/ game. Its crunch time.

“Our best players”? Our best players don’t play for UL.

Yo Cal. We got ran out of the gym. Not because these guys didn’t scrimmage this week. Rather, because they wouldn’t REBOUND!!

Also – Because Nick Richards is playing way too many minutes. I guess he forgot how well SKJ played against Kansas. What am i missing?!

This much talking and excuses in March is not good.

You could also see the let up in defense in the Ole Miss game. The late season emphasis on offense may have hurt. But also realize that just about every home team won their last home game, and some were upsets, with few close games. This wasn’t really an upset, and the Cats couldn’t match the intensity of the Gators. More games on neutral sites should help going forward.

The positive aspect would be, every game from this point on will be a home game atmosphere for Kentucky. The kids will see the real fans and feel their energy. I think he must feel it helps to have a couple of his best players coming off the bench and that is why we do not see a change in the starting 5. There was a lot of foul trouble (poorly officiated game in my opinion) and I think this is why Richards played so many minutes. None of these kids should go pro ….
