John Calipari elected to not have a pregame shootaround prior to today’s game, as they normally do. If he could go back in time, he would’ve stuck with the routine and gotten his team together for a morning session.
“I decided not to have a shootaround today,” Calipari said after the game. “I’m not making an excuse. That was my choice. If I had to do it all over again, now that I’ve seen the result, I would’ve had a shootaround this morning. I just felt maybe they were mature enough to do this, and I’m learning about this team.”
It’s hard to say what effect the no-shootaround decision had on the team’s readiness, but one could assume it played a role in the slow start. Remember, Cal had to call a timeout one minute into the game because his team fell down two baskets early.
No more skipping shootaround, please.
