There was a time, not long ago, when Kentucky was recruiting Texas star freshman Myles Turner. Turner, though not a huge priority for the Cats, held an offer from UK and was considering Lexington, even if just a little. John Calipari already had a loaded frontcourt lined up for this season so the interest was never high either way, but there was interest at one time.
Clearly, things didn’t work out and now Turner is a Texas Longhorn. Good for him. But his recruitment wasn’t a complete loss because it produced maybe my favorite quote from a UK target regarding our head coach.
In Turner’s high school blog for USA Today, he wrote, “Like Coach (John) Calipari is really laid back. He told me straight-up: ‘Myles I’m a 50-year-old man and you’re a teenager; there’s nothing we can talk about every day. I’m not gonna be calling you seven days a week.’ I really liked that.”
Cal likely uses this line on most, if not all of the players he pursues, and I’m a big fan of the tactic. Why try to start a fake conversation about shoes and teenager stuff when you can be like, “Hey kid, I’m an old man and you’re not so let’s live our own lives and catch up from time to time, k?”
Real always recognizes real.
