Calipari on Tennessee loss: “This one’s on me”

A lot of fans are angry with John Calipari for not calling a timeout in the final minute of the game when his team panicked, but give Cal credit; he started his postgame press conference by accepting the blame for Kentucky’s collapse.

“I made mistakes in the end and cost them the game. I should have called a timeout. I don’t ever like to in those situations but this is a different team. This team is too young. They’re just too young to know what’s there and if they get in trouble, just call a timeout.”

A Shai Gilgeous-Alexander jumper put Kentucky up two with 1:28 left but the Vols continued to capitalize on Kentucky’s errors. A Shai turnover led to a huge Tennessee three, followed by another Shai turnover that led to a dunk by Admiral Schofield to put the Vols up by three. Shai went to the line and hit a free throw with four seconds left, but it was too late. Tennessee won, completing the sweep over Kentucky and stealing what would have been a huge, huge win for the Cats going forward. As always, Calipari refused to blame his players.

“I wanted to see — I should have called a timeout. This one’s on me; it’s not on this team. This team did everything they could to win the game.”

Not calling a timeout late in the game worked last week vs. Vanderbilt, but not tonight vs. Tennessee, which Calipari chalked up to the Vols’ physical play.

“This is such a young team and I could see when they crowded the court and they were being physical, pushing guys around and into each other, I should have called a timeout. At least 10, 12 seconds to go, I should have seen it and when I saw it, I let it go, hoping he would maybe — you can’t hope. Not with these kids.”

“I’m saying that the chance that we had to win the game fell to me and I let it go.”

Blaming Cal is not the answer. We scored 59 points. At home. Coming off a loss. Shai and Quade played great. Nick played well also. But that’s it. They’ve completed regressed the second half of the year. These guys need to come back. I’m sure Diallo will go but that might be a good thing.

But I’ve got the youngest team blah blah blah. Your excuses are getting old Cal. No offensive movement, no set plays. But hey, we finally scored on an out of bounds underneath so things are looking up. Fire all the assistants and bring back Orlando Antigua. Joel Justice is out of his league and Kenny Payne has outlasted his UL welcome. Demand it Barnhart or tell Cal his seat is warm. Are we a football school yet hahahahaha!

It does apparently buy a free pass with a bunch of people here. There is this cult of Cal who seems to have the idea that he is bigger than UK basketball, unquestionable in all things. If you don’t kiss the ring of Cal you should just go root for some other team even though there were nearly 2000 wins before he ever showed up. MANY championships before he ever showed up. Despite all that history, the greatest tradition in college basketball worshiping Cal is bigger than all of that. He is bigger than UK.

I agree Ed. The slightest criticism of Cal and they’re ready to brand you a traitor and have you tarred and feathered. Some things Cal has done have been great, but when he drops the ball all the Cal apologists need to open their eyes.
A lot of people seem to think Cal built Kentucky. I think Kentucky helped build Cal. They’re still a good fit but he has to do some adjustments. Now, cue the “what are you coaching credentials?” comments.

Well,I was the 6th man off the bench in the late 1980s for the #1 ranked state team and #5 nationally, but the game is much to different to compare today,EXCEPT for the fundamentals..This team is solid on D,,the guys just haven’t been able to score on a consistent basis. ..Last season we just outscored teams for alot of Ws..Not so much this year…Fellas, this is what we have, it’s Our team,we must support them right now. MAYBE Knox? It would be nice to get a second year of JV, SGA, PJ, Richards and Quade – but Diallo and Knox are good as gone. I don’t get it. But that’s why there’s a G-League.

He’s only the 6th coach since Rupp and this is yet another down year. Maybe it is an NIT year but who cares. These are the kids that “wanted” to come to Kentucky. So many others were recruited and did not come here. She may not be the prettiest girl but she’s who we brought to the dance. Enjoy and celebrate these kids instead of tearing them down. It’s a basketball game. There are worse things in life that people deal with everyday. We’re too spoiled as a fan base and we’ll look back later and see how great we had it. Peace out

there are things that happen within the game that cause a loss, the TO or lack of one is not what cost the game. getting beat for a dunk after a made FT is what losses games. lack of defense, blocking out and rebounding loses games, standing around watching loses games, i actually think this team has gotten WORSE as the season has gone on, were better at the beginning of the year. they are not confident, they are not fighting, they are regressing in a bad way.

looking at the schedule and they could easily lose the last 6 of 7 games, easy. there is no reason to think they will win a road game rest of the year, bama at home – they beat OU, missouri at home, play similar to tennesee. Miss. as the only win and a first round loss in the SEC tourney will get you in the NIT…

Didn’t work for Tubby, either. Can’t stand it when they treat the players like that. If they’re making you angry as a coach, it’s because you’re not coaching well enough.

Talk to them like adults and you’re their coach when they come over to the sideline. They ll retain more that way than with screaming and stomping.

I am NOT saying Cal needs to go. However, that was not “gold standard” coaching last night. That was one big choke. Very disappointing especially after Cal calls on Rupp crowd to lift this team up. Many of the BBN are weary of “we’re the youngest team in college” excuse.
Yes, we may still have lost after a timeout, but it still should be taken.
On the bright side, today is national signing day so the KSR crew can talk football today.
