Calipari on staying at UK: “Fate intervened”

While in town for the Calipari Fantasy Camp, ESPN’s Seth Greenberg sat down with Cal to film a few short interviews for ESPN, and couldn’t help but ask about LeBron and the Cavaliers. Cal is a bit exasperated with the question, but played along, telling Greenberg that “fate intervened” for him when four players decided to return to Kentucky in lieu of entering the draft, which made his decision to come back simple.

“Fate intervened for me,” Cal said. “Whatever happened after the season with any teams, at the end of the day, this is where I wanted to be. And you know a big part of it is we had four guys stay, and they didn’t have the chance to say ‘well if you leave, we’ll leave.’ No, you already made a decision to stay. So that weighed on me more than anything else.”

Cal only mentioned four, but I’ll mention six. Thank you, Andrew, Aaron, Alex, Willie, Dakari, and Marcus.

It could be only four. The other two might’ve said “well if you leave, we’ll leave.”

Since the players had to make their decision after the season, before Cal, theres no way any of them couldve said “well if you leave, we’ll leave.” Thats what Cal is saying in his quote, “they didn’t have the chance to say ‘well if you leave, we’ll leave.’ No, you already made a decision to stay.”

The question that wasn’t asked was what about next year or the year after? If I’m a recruit, I’d want a guarantee the coach is coming back before I sign–and I haven’t seen him say that anywhere. He almost went this year and only came back because 4 (6) guys decided to return. What if 7 or 8 leave next year, as is likely? What then? This is probably why we’ve only got one recruit signed at this point, but the reporters don’t seem willing to ask that question.

What coach gives a guarantee he will be back? What if he guarantees to 2015 recruits he will be back, but the Cavs new coach bombs and Cal decides to coach Cleveland next year. They will just decommit and go elsewhere or transfer after enrollment. What if Cal is taking it year by year and doesn’t want to guarantee he’ll be here? Why should he? How many other coaches make guarantees about future seasons? Next to none. We have 1 recruit because most elite recruits know a spot will be kept open for them for as long as it takes at the schools on their list. The recruits want to wait and see who all might be declaring for the draft after the season. Don’t panic, has Cal let you down yet with a recruiting class? Maybe reporters don’t ask the question because it’s a foolish question.

Appreciate all that Cal is doing for UK but sometimes he really puts his worth well above the program. We will be fine when he leaves.

Cal is the perfect fit for UK and vice versa. He is bigger than life and UK is a bigger than life program. I suspect he could run for Governor, when he retires and win by a landslide, as long as he doesn’t get elected ag comish first and misaporopriate funds.

It comes with the job fellas. The last three before John all were tied to close calls of leaving while at UK. I think Cal is here for the long haul. If he didn’t leave for 80 mil and a chance to coach Lebron he ain’t leaving.
