Calipari met with the Harrison twins this morning

John Calipari was a guest on 104.5 The Zone in Nashville this morning and he dropped a piece of news for Cats fans who were listening. I wasn’t listening, but the internet is awesome so we know Cal said he met with the twins “about 20 minutes ago” and told them he supports their final decision either way. He sealed the conversation with a couple of hugs.

104.5 will have the audio online soon and we’ll post it for you here.

Announcement on the way?

“He sealed the conversation with a couple of hugs.” If true, that means bye-bye….

I would agree with that, if it wasn’t for pride. Aaron is more ready than Andrew in my opinion, but I don’t see one going without the other because then the one who stays has to live with being the “inferior” or “under-developed” of the two

Sounds like he met with them but they hadn’t made a decision yet. He said “he supports their final decision either way”. Since Cal is leaving this weekend to hit the recruiting trail he probably wanted to connect with them in case they did decide to leave. It still could go either way, but not sure this necessarily means they’re gone.

Whatever their decision, good luck to them. There’s a lot of hard work to put in to reach the goals they ultimately want to achieve, though I do think the easiest path to those goals is with one more year at UK but it’s their lives and I wish them the best.

They are coming back! Cal loves to play jokes on BBN. Cal knew everyone would interpret the hug as a good bye. That’s the only reason he mentioned it. Welcome Back, Twins!

  17. RC
    11:09 am April 25, 2014 Permalink

Leaving will be a HUGE mistake for the Twins, IMHO. You need to read Rex Chapman’s overview on just how many legit prospects are in this draft. It’s staggering. There are 45-ish legit first round prospects vying for 30 slots. Forget Lottery, the Twins will be lucky to get picked in the first round.

The only possible reason to leave now is that by getting drafted late in the 1st or anywhere in the 2nd round, the Twins are more likely to end up in good organizations instead of the dumpster-fire situations that a lottery picks goes to. If the Twins each want to play for an organization like the Spurs or Bulls or Mavericks then not being a high draft pick is to their advantage.

Of course, there’s ZERO guarantee that Andrew or Aaron can make a roster like the Spurs or Mavericks next year. They’re just not NBA-ready. Not yet.

Can you blame them after how some of our own fans treated them? It would make it hard for me to come back if I was in their position. If I struggle then they will hate me and tell me they wish I’d left. Who wants to be treated like that?

    • JC
      11:16 am April 25, 2014 Permalink

Why so negative? Have they said that they don’t want to be here? People speculate way too much. Could it be that they had a difficult decision? Could it be that career decisions aren’t just that easy? Could it also be that they had classes and other things going on besides obsessing over the decision like most people have been doing? Damn. We are crazy fans if we’re stalking the every move and trying to read the minds of two 19 year olds.

  27. Sheeeeiiit
    11:24 am April 25, 2014 Permalink

I think they want to go pro real bad. It surely is their dream to be in the NBA. I bet they hoped one year at UK and boom they are lottery picks. But they didn’t play well enough all of last year to solidify that high selection. I think they have been searching for a team or anyone to tell them: here’s how you go pro now and get that dream. Unfortunately no one has told them what they want to hear. Now it’s a big risk to go pro. Who knows if they will gamble or play it safe.

  28. Dandy Don
    11:26 am April 25, 2014 Permalink

I don’t think these guys hate Kentucky/college and want to get out of here. This may be the biggest decision of their lives. Why wouldn’t you explore every option and find out as much as possible before making the decision. Sounds smart to me. Also, of course the twins want to go pro, but so does every other college basketball player in America. If EJ Floreal was projected 1st round draft pick, would he go. Bet your last dollar he would. I think if these kids think they won’t be drafted first round, they will come back and have a great sophmore year. Just remember, these kids are 18 years old and its a humbling experience from going to best guards in their class and projected lottery picks to potentionally being a two year college player.

I don’t think you can read more or less in to this than what was actually said. Here is what we know: these guys want to play in the NBA, they want to go sooner than later, they don’t want to make a decision that would harm their career, Cal will support them either way. All I see in this quote is underlining those things that we already knew. If they go, they go. If they stay, they stay. We will all know by Sunday night.

I can not get over the fact that everyone on here thinks they know how to read between the lines of every word Coach says…opinion are like butts, everyones got one, encluding me…Not going to try and be a mind reader, but I have enough brains to understand just what these kids are going through right now. Think about it,,,They came in, with what many called the best recruiting class ever put together, and talks of a 40-0 season and preseason ranked at the #1 team in the land. Then to fall far short of 40-0, and finish 6 full games behind the league winner after 18 games. Then to put a great NCAA run together, that gave everyone a small glimpse of what could have been, and couple bad breaks that kept them from winning the schools 9th National Championship finishing in the runner up spot..If you add all this up, the Wins, the loses, the NCAA Tournament Run, and are still being told that they need to return to school for a 2nd year to improve their game..Not what these two guys were looking to hear, at the end of this season, but in their minds, they feel like they done enough to prove they can make itat the next level. However, its the NBA coaches and scouts who have believe this, and right now, I can’t name one team willing to take the risk on either of the twins at the next level. The problem is their parents have to be convenced of these facts as well..I believe their Father is pushing for them to leave UK and take the chance on the draft..Even a 2nd round draft pick gets paid, even in the D league. Its my guess, both are leaving, and getting the small pay check every week is the reason why…They can improve their game in the D league, while getting paid, and at UK, they get Zip, while hoping they can play another full season without getting hurt, and improving the skill levels good enough to warrant a 1st round pick in 2015….So with that said, I say both are gone and thats all there is ….The Twins left their mark here at UK, with special games by both during the season, so remember those, because there is no more to come….

    • backwordsben
      11:40 am April 25, 2014 Permalink

That makes a lot of sense except it’s been said multiple times and is pretty obvious that the Harrison’s aren’t financially burdened so I doubt they are seriously concerned about a D league check if that’s the route they took. Can get even better in practice at UK

  33. Ben
    11:35 am April 25, 2014 Permalink

If they go, then it is their mistake to make! Cal can say he supports them, no matter their choice! What about what is truly best for their future? Is it smart to take a chance on grabbing for the gold ring, when all the experts say to stay another year. You do not tell them to go and be called a player first person, when you are really just a yes man. If I was their father, I would tell them that your best chance is to return for a year and then go pro. Do not risk a once in a lifetime opportunity for a little instant gratification! In life, you work to improve your situation and then take the necessary risks.

  34. backwordsben
    11:36 am April 25, 2014 Permalink

I know people have discussed if one of them goes then the other goes in order to not feel inferior. What about a scenario where Aaron may stay because Andrew is not ready to make the jump? All kinds of ways at looking at this decision. And for everyone saying “just make the decision,” this is by FAR the biggest decision these kids will probably EVER make in their lives…EVER! Their decision is the most complicated one out of all of our freshmen so yeah obviously they are taking the longest.

  35. Here's the deal...
    11:37 am April 25, 2014 Permalink

If they go, they get maybe 600 grand, BEFORE taxes. That being said, one more year of college and they’ll make more next year than during the whole contract they’d be under now, should they go.

This is what they’re hearing and no matter how bad they want to go, they’ll be back for another year.
    Now you know….

  37. Greg
    11:47 am April 25, 2014 Permalink

I’m ok either way and here’s why: if they go, that has been their dream and focus all along. It is a stretch for them to declare, so if they go, that means it was the right choice for them. I really don’t want them to return if it is like putting a square peg in a round hole. But if they return, it means the decision was well thought out and they see the value of returning and investing more in development. So I think it is good either way. If they go, maybe Ulis and Booker, though more
Inexperienced and not as talented, may provide for better team chemistry.

    11:53 am April 25, 2014 Permalink

If you’re going to parse and read tea leaves, do it based on what Cal actually said and not on Drew’s indirect two-sentence summary.

“I met with both brothers because I was going to leave town and I just wanted to grab them and give them a hug and just let them know that I support them. My thing to these kids, whatever decision they make, 50 years from now, what will Kentucky basketball be? Will it change? No. You do what you need to do for you and your family. This program will be fine. I’ll figure [out a] way. It’s not going to change my life, but that decision they make could change their life. And that’s how I approach this.

“When I met them this morning, I said, ‘How many meeting have we had?” They said two. ‘How long were those meetings?’ Five minutes. Do you understand, I am not going to do the brainwashing four hours, ‘I can make you better free throw shooters, I’m going to play you different, I’m going to get you more shots, we’re going to highlight you more.’ I don’t play that game.” * * *

“I want them to come back because they want to come back. Or, I want them to go pro because they want to go pro. And then I’m going to help them be drafted in the first round.”

Thanks to Darrell, No. 11 above, for the link. Go to the 12:09 mark.

I think they are going. I think Tyler Ulis may have been the deciding factor. He is going to get playing time. He brings an element missing to the team, unreal quickness, ball hawking ability that will bring 2 or 3 steals a game. With everyone returning this team will be expected to win it all. Lot of that pressure will once again fall on the Harrison’s, If the team doesn’t produce, they again will take the brunt of the heat, if the team does win they will get little credit, because the team was expected to.
