Calipari hints that he might start Dominique Hawkins

Dominique Hawkins was behind Kentucky’s first half rally today, and for the past month or so, has smoothed over the Cats’ struggles at the guard position. According to John Calipari, that may be enough to earn him the starting nod. On his postgame show, Cal said that he’s considering starting Dominique the next game in hopes it will help Kentucky get off to a faster start.

“So, maybe Dom starts. Then, which one of you three is coming off the bench?” Cal said, referring to the current starting backcourt of De’Aaron Fox, Malik Monk, and Isaiah Briscoe.

I hate to say it, especially since he had eight assists today, but maybe you have Briscoe come off the bench. Kentucky looked pretty good with Fox, Monk, and Hawkins running the show this afternoon, and maybe Briscoe as the sixth man is the tweak this team needs. Calipari said he’s going to use the next week of practice leading into the tournament to figure it out.

“We’re just not there yet,” Cal said of his squad. “There are spells in the game where I say, ‘Okay, we’ll be fine.’ There are other times when I say this will end fast.”

Is starting Dom the right move? He’s certainly earned it.

If the point is to save Kentucky from a slow start why would he sit Briscoe? Monk and Fox are the ones who haven’t shown up to play till about 17:43 in the second half 2 games in a row.

And honestly the offense looked better with Briscoe at the 1 spot today. We made that first half comeback when Fox sat down.

Plus Hawkins started on Tuesday and we didn’t exactly get off to a fast start. I think having as the first guard off the bench is fine.

We also started. Mulder, Willis. I think it isnt a bad idea, but who do you sit? I say Fox. For the reason to be that he seems to play better when he comes off the bench. Plus, he is lightening fast and could add additional spark when he enters the game.

We don’t have to bench a starter just because a bench player plays well.

Briscoe brings more to the table than the freshman. Start Hawkins and Briscoe! And they all need to look to Bam more, he’s way more efficient than Monk and Fox!!

What about completely switching it up and going with a more traditional type lineup of either Fox or Briscoe as the one, Monk as the 2, Willis and Gabriel at the 3 and 4, and Bam. To me it makes no sense to have 2 point guards out there, especially one that has no outside shot when a lot of teams play zone against us. Also, having Briscoe in there guarding a 3 position is a big size disadvantage.

People’s opinions of what is going on don’t seem to match the actual stats.

Briscoe has played well to me. I don’t get it.

Briscoe is playing exactly how we need him to play.

I don’t know who to sit. Certainly Dom has played better at times, than all three of the others. Today I watched Monk just walk through the motions. His head was definitely not in the game. He sure acted like he did not want the ball. I think sometimes that conference play is a poison for these young Cal teams. And it’s always the other team that has something to gain from a win.

Monk was active on Defense and the glass. Its good to know before tourny starts what we look like without Monk scoring. If he hit his avg today we win by 23.

Start the 3 Seniors, Bam, and whoever has fire coming out of their ears at the end of the shootaround. Evidently the “shoot around” can now be called the “fart around” because our guys are just not ready to play. Hitting 1 for the first 15 shots and spotting the opponent a huge lead will send us packing against the formidable teams that await us. Come on man!

It’s a little late to be experimenting with different staring line-ups and team chemistry. Should have done that long ago. Might work out but could back-fire…

Personally I think they should do about 4 minutes of wind sprints to get their heart rates up and wind in their lungs to start the game then they won’t take the first 10 minutes getting warmed up!
