Calipari calls into Mike Francesa’s show to critique Francesa’s critique of him

John Calipari went on the Mike Francesa show yesterday, and after his appearance, Francesa said he doesn’t believe that Cal is a great X’s and O’s coach and that his strength lies in recruiting and getting talent to play together. Calipari didn’t like that one bit, and called into the show as “John from Kentucky” to argue with him. “Are you saying I can’t coach? Why didn’t you say that while I was sitting next to you?” Cal laughed. “You said ‘he’s not great at X’s and O’s.’ That’s basically saying I can’t coach. You know what they call me? A magician. ‘Cal the magician.'”

The clip is hilarious and you should stop what you’re doing and listen:

Lot of interesting things in that clip. Coach Cal with the fake voice at first, then Cal quoting his own nickname, then Francesa just dropping Cal like he was a regular caller. Wows all around.

You can’t trust anyone’s basketball IQ who says that Cal is only a recruiter and motivator. That’s such a regurgitated media falsity. That’s what you say if you don’t know anything about basketball and just want something to talk about. If Francesa knew anything about basketball (and watched an actual Cats game), he’d see the switching of the defenses at key times, the complexity of the offense, and the perfectly timed set-plays. As well as the knowledge to know when to let the guys play through bad stretches and when to get involved. To say Cal doesn’t know X’s and O’s is just uninformed.

    • Yeah but...
      4:22 pm August 21, 2014 Permalink

Switching defenses at key times… Like in the NC game when they were killing them playing zone but he inexplicably played man most the 2nd half.

The complexity of the offense… Like his “tweak” that literally was telling his point guard to PASS the ball rather than look for his own shot.

Knowledge to know when to let guys play through bad stretches and when to get involved… Like when he “expected” guys to just sub themselves in and out as needed.

The guy has a point. Cal is not a top tier Xs and Os guy. He is very good but still far from great. He has racked up all his wins based on the fact that he is an excellent motivator and plays with the best players in college basketball every year.

He said that because he was on KSR. Lol

It isn’t wrong to call a spade a spade. He didn’t say Cal couldn’t coach or draw up Xs and Os. He said he isn’t great at it. I agree. As someone pointed out above, it’s about the Jimmys and Joes not the Xs and Os. Cal knows this. One of the worst things you can do with great talent is put limits on them with “Xs and Os”. That is like a tied up wild horse. You will never see it’s potential. You let it out, let run, let it roam, within a certain distance of course, but you let them be them. THAT is why Cal is a great coach. Not because he can draw up a better play than the opposing coach in 30 seconds.

Common trick for hosts of all types of shows. Softball with a guest while they are on, then run them down after the segment when they can’t defend themselves. See it happen all the time. Glad Cal called him on it.
As far as Cal as a bball tactician, whichever tactic wins is the best tactic. People think the coach’s fingerprints should be on every possession for a coach to be a “tactician.” Allowing players more room for creativity on the court is not a lack of tactics, it is a tactic unto itself. People like this host are stuck inside “the box” because they think running rigid sets is the only expression of strategy. The Redcoats felt the same way about battle –until they starting getting whooped by guerilla tactics. General Cal Washington gonna show ’em all.

Well, he did take 4 Memphis teams to the NIT. Didn’t start winning until the good teams left for the Big East and Wes started helping him (starting with Milt Wagner’s boy). He loses in the first weekend if he is coaching Uofl’s 2013 title team. Probably misses the dance on Uofl’s 05 team, which made a final 4 with a bunch of scrubs and Garcia.

Also, it was 3 Memphis teams. He also took over a team called Memphis that was average at best and had to turn things around. They were in a weaker conference too.

Explain the 1992 UMass team he took to the Sweet 16. A 30 win team with marginal talent. Also don’t forget the Elite 8 and Final 4 with UMass. Did I mention it was UMass? That’s the University of Massachusetts. He took them to the Final 4.

      11:43 am August 21, 2014 Permalink

I fail to see how you’re the voice of reason. The only thing Francesca is correct about is there are different aspects that make up the overall job of coaching. Recruiting is one of them. Pitino being bad at recruiting (or developing top recruits ie Samuels, Caracter, Behanan, etc) shouldn’t be used to defend his coaching skills nor insult Cal’s. It’s part of coaching. A few times he’s overcome his poor recruiting to have success

Cal gets great players who are unselfish and have high character. Despite what some will have you believe, he doesn’t just take the best players as determined by some outside list. He’s selective and has passed on guys who wouldn’t fit those characteristics but were great players (Selby, Ledo, Q. Miller, C. Walker, Behanan to name a few).

He’s also implemented completely different systems/schemes each year to fit the players he has and had to teach (coach) them and essentially start over each year. To deny that to have the success he’s had at UK with such high turnover takes a lot of excellent coaching to go along with the recruiting/motivating is to just be blinded by your bias.

Are there better Xs & Os coaches out there? Sure. Are they better coaches overall? Not a chance. Is Cal a “bad” Xs & Os coach? Hell no.

I’ll remind you all that BCG was supposed to be some great Xs & Os guy.

What do all great coaches get measured on? Winning!!!! Not X’s and O’s, and even the biggest Cal haters in the world cant deny him his ability to win basketball games. Saying Cal cant coach is the equivalent of saying “you don’t have to be a great X’s and O’s guy to win in college basketball” if you step back and think about it. The bottom line is, great X’s and O’s coach or not, Cal is the man, and he wins. Win and nothing else matters in my book. This is the only tidbit these trolls can hate on Cal for. Cal said it in the Bahamas “Don’t let outsider criticism influence us this year.” Its already started. In one ear out the other, BBN.

Just ask Pitino if Cal can “do X’s and O’s.” If I recall, Pitino looked like he didn’t even know they were part of the alphabet, nor did his players, when Willie switched out to guard the perimeter in the tourney this past spring. I smile and laugh every time I think about it. Fran has always been just another radio host who loves the sound of his own voice, and nothing more since he is hardly knowledgable about anything. He said something that wasn’t just opinion, but utterly foolish, and to hear him backtrack sounds like a politician caught in a spin cycle. He has no credibility. One thing you ALWAYS hear about Cal from recruits is that he is honest, (Yes, I know he says crazy things sometimes) because he tells it like it is and makes no promises. Funny how the most dishonest people have issues with him, huh?

No balls move by Francesca to make the statement after Cal had left. But I do have to agree that being deficient in X’s & O’s does not mean you are a bad coach. There is more to the job than X’s & O’s. Cal excels at most of the other aspects, but frankly, I agree he is not one of the best at X’s & O’s. But it’s not the way he approaches the game, especially on offense. He relies on superior talent and the dribble drive, rather than traditional set plays.

How many NBA stars did that team have? Not many…. A.Walker then everyone else had a cup of coffee in the league and they were gone! UK certainly didn’t have a Camby on their team. With that being said, Edgar Padilla and Carmelo Traviaso were DYNAMITE players, ask Coach Cal! He told the Harrison’s boys that they reminded him of them when he recruited them out of high school. He is always looking better ways, to adapt plays , to an;d for players and his teams. This makes him ELITE in my opinion. Maybe he i:s not known for one particular X and O Art , because he tweaks everything to make better and is given little credit. Calipari is one of the top 5 coaches in basketball. He has proven this by being able to adjust to his teams. No team at UK has been exactly the same as the team the year before. Josh Harrelson and DeAndre Liggins are both good examples of him being able to get the most from a player. I remember him coaching at UMass. He beat the 1996 team in regular season and came very close to beating it again in the tournament. Pitino is 1-6 vs Cal while he has been at UK. NCAA tournament record at UK 18-3. Three Final fours and one NCAA title. For all of those that say it’s the recruiting… is one of the most important parts of being a college coach.

Some UK fan are calling Cal a quality coach. No, Cal’s a great coach and all anyone has to do is look at his record over the years. Cal’s record speaks for itself and guys like Francesa has other motives when they won’t address their opinions to Cal face to face.

Saban has been called by some the greatest of the great. But Saban sits in heart of the hot bed of college football at Alabama. He rules the recruiting of the deep south and the Bears’ offspring in Alabama flock to him. Cal has always had to recruit outside of his home state and that alone makes his record even more remarkable. Fans should understand there is a vast difference in recruiting between the two sports.

Both Saban and Cal are at the top of their professions and it would be a fools guess to try and pick the greatest in any sport. I’m glad we have Cal.

Lol. Saban goes all over the country, too. Alabama isn’t the greatest state for football recruiting. He has to go into Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Tennessee and Texas. Cal isn’t a better coach than Saban, bud. Sorry.

On what planet are Cal’s accomplishments more remarkable than Saban’s? Not a one. Even the people at KSR have said Saban is the best coach in all of college sports, including Matt Jones.

if it were as simple as recruiting top talent, last year’s team would’ve went undefeated. Coaching is why we were in the championship game.

And what happened to Coach K, who had a pretty darn good recruiting class last year + returning talent?

What about UNC? Kansas (who some argued had the better recruiting class last year)?

Pitino has two titles. One with the most talented team in history (96 cats) and the 2013 Cardinals which boasted a minimum of 3 McdAA’s and Gorgui Dieng, not to mention Harrell coming off the bench.

    So, who can’t coach?

      4:59 pm August 21, 2014 Permalink

The 96′ cats weren’t THAT talented, Antoine Walker was the only one to have a REAL NBA career. A. Delk, W.MCarty, Ron Mercer and a bunch of others I can’t remember ALL FLAMED OUT EARLY.

Delk did last for 10 years in the Association. Not an All-Star but a respectable career.

The most telling thing about Francesa is that he hung up on Cal. Apparently he’s only a great radio host when no one disagrees with him. Make him face his own bullsh*t and he bails. that’s basically what he did, he ran away from the fight. Coward

Can’t believe that piece of sh!t cut Cal off. He knew he was out of his league and took the easy way out. I’d take Cal over any coach is basketball pro or college. UK will have more championships than UCLA before Cal retires and that you can take to the bank. We have the BEST coach period Francesa or whatever your name is. In CAL we trust. Go CATS

I don’t know who Mike Francesa is and I frankly don’t care. After Cal called in the dude got very defensive and started talking in circles to cover his a$$. Cal was literally laughing at him and the guy drops him like the northeastern elitist prick he appears to be.
I gotta agree with another poster, Jay Bilas…who freakin played the game under Coach K would seem to be a far better judge than some no-name, east coast, radio talk show host.
