Calipari believes Derek Willis and Marcus Lee will eventually help UK win games

With the bench proving to be a very vital teaching tool this season, John Calipari can deliver a strong message to his players: We can win without you.

On this morning’s SEC coaches teleconference, he pointed out that Kentucky has managed to win games without Julius Randle, Andrew Harrison, Aaron Harrison or James Young.

“Now what’s important about that is those guys know: If you don’t come to play and compete and battle, you’re not quite ready, you’re out and we’ll win without you,” Calipari said of his star players. “That is very important for a team to know and I’ve made it a point to let them know that. Whether it’s Julius or Aaron or Andrew or James — we have enough.”

Calipari called Derek Willis one guy he has to get engaged because he has been playing so well in practice. Willis is averaging three minutes per game with six DNPs.

“I’ve gotta get him started a little bit,” Cal said. “He and Marcus Lee are the two that we’ve gotta keep engaged, because I really think before it’s all said and done, they’re going to help us win games.”

The issue is finding them opportunities to prove it.

Quote from the Poppy Seed episode of Seinfeld:
Jerry’s got nothing. Newman’s got nothing. You’re the only one I know who’s got the good stuff, and I need it bad, baby, cause I feel like I got bugs crawling up my skin. Now you gotta help me out.

This is exactly how I feel about the Podcast….I can’t listen at work. I depend on this 80 minutes to get me through my exercise ritual, drive home, etc.

He has been saying that all year. So he isnt going to get them any game experience and just wait unitl everybody is in foul trouble and throw them to the wolves…….. They should have been getting many more minutes early in the year to prepare them, i know lee has had some medicle issues but what is the excuse for Willis.

Same blow he used on Willis prior to uofl game, he played about 35 seconds. Maybe he’ll get 40 seconds Wed night.

This is my least favorite “Calism” because he says it repeatedly then never follows through with it. Plenty of chances for him to sit the first 7 and he hasn’t. Keeps talking about Lee’s energy and each game (or half for that matter) we get off to a slow start and still no Lee.

We have heard the same old bull before about Lee and Willis. It is time to put up or shut up with these kids. I am a die hard cat fan for 65 years. So don’t tell not to be negative.

It’s simple “coach speak”. He can’t tell the truth, which would be “I like to play an 8-man rotation, but these guys are working hard and doing very well in practice, so I need to continue to motivate them for next year and the year after that. I also need to continue to motivate Dakari and Alex, so I’ll say positive things to send the right signals to everyone.”

Cal will have a chance with the SEC being pretty weak this year…wed night should be a convincing win..plenty of time to give these guys some minutes..Miss ST, Georgia, Vandy, A and M and South Carolina are all horrible and these guys need the time on the court to get comfortable in big games where they MIGHT be needed.

more Cal “speak” bs…… maybe stop playing Young or Randle the last five minutes when we’re killing it the first few games to keep the “double double bs” or the 25 points bs going….. Cal does not know what to do with all this talent…. instead of pressing all game and playing 8-9 or even 10 players, most of which would be defensively, he’s staying with 7 and 60 seconds or less for the 8th player rotation.

      3:42 pm January 6, 2014 Permalink

Maybe Cal keeps Young and Randle in the game in the last minutes of a blowout to teach them to play for 40 minutes.

I agree an 8 or 9 man rotation would be better, but I’m not one to agree with letting guys have mop up minutes in every blowout. If you’re blowing people out mid-January, sure, but not in the crucial November time when these guys are learning to play together as a team.

      3:50 pm January 6, 2014 Permalink

I agree, Rae. Randle and Young (and Andrew and Aaron) needed the experience, too. Let’s make sure our starters are developed and ready when we really need them and then we can worry about the bench.

  15. cdc_uky
    3:30 pm January 6, 2014 Permalink

He can’t play those guys yet. If you haven’t noticed, the starters/first guys off the bench are still reaching their potential. Everyone is learning the system and how to play together. The best players need to be on the floor as much as possible or the team will not come together.

James Cline and others who have been fans since horse and buggy…you can’t have a team of freshman studs and expect them to develop on the bench. Lee and Willis will get their time next year…he is just complimenting their work in practice in coach-speak.

Don’t remember saying or even insinuating I know more than Coach Cal. But I get tired of hearing his same 4 or 5 taglines during every press conference. You might as well put them all on a wheel and spin it when someone asks him a question.

Jim, you must be a simple-minded, easily distracted and fooled piece of work. People have opinions that they have the right to have. And if you look closely, a lot of others agree with. You keep enjoying the blue pudding that Cal and this website loves to feed.

not here to insult and be-little anyone….thanks for the tip Jim. wonder why (even) Cal has said he’s playing his starters too much and not realizing it?????? he has said- too many minutes, role players need to get in (Willis multiple times as well as Lee) but according to some that’s wrong “they’ve gotta stay in and gain cohesiveness”…… interesting some are know it alls and some are just assholes here…and some just point out Cal “speak” contradicting himself- that’s it.

I trust what Calipari has to say, thats why he gets paid $4mil a year.

Some people are never happy with whatever coach we may have.

We as UK fans should shutup and let Coach Calipari, be just that, he doesnt need anymore coaches on his staff.

How many times have we heard this already this season? Has anything changed? When the game starts Cal is incapable of adaptation. Either the six he always plays produces without any change to the game plan at all, or we lose. It’s that simple. The only time subs have gotten minutes and done well is from fouls, injuries or illnesses. It works more times than not when your 6 are future NBA players. But when they aren’t, or aren’t living up to the hype, you get last season and this season.
Cal’s a great salesman. Which translates fantastically in recruiting and motivation. He’s a good coach simple from doing it for 20 years. But their is nothing exceptional about his coaching ability.

uhhh…it’s called “put them at the score table,” that easy lol. So many times I’ve wondered why Cal will pull a gassed Randle or WCS when you have a fresh Willis or Lee. At least for a few minutes to give Randle and WCS a bit more of a breather. I mean, Randle was cramping up like crazy after the 1st half of the UofL game….let the kid get a little bit more of a breather by using a deeper bench and that doesn’t happen.
