Cal says offense is running at 50 to 60 percent right now

Kentucky has blown away the early competition this season and is already being considered one of the best teams ever. But to John Calipari, they’re a long way from reaching their ceiling, especially on offense. They have a long way to go.

Today he said, “Offensively, we’re at about 50 to 60 percent capacity right now. We’re just not there. Defensively, I would guess we’re 70 to 80 percent there. But we’re still not where we could be in either area. Offensively we’re behind where we are defensively.”

May I remind you, Kentucky is No. 1 in Pomeroy’s adjusted defense rankings and No. 3 in offense. And if Kentucky is at 70ish percent defensively, as Cal claims, Kansas is running for their lives if they end up anywhere near UK in the tournament.

More from Cal’s presser to come…

I agree with Cal. Aaron and Booker are finding their stroke but not necessarily looking to score like they are capable of. Lyles has a sweet looking jump shot but he has been off since the end of the exhibition games. The bigs have all shown sparks of scoring but no one has postioned themselves to be ‘that guy’ when we need a basket in close. As is the nature of Cal’s team I think we’ll see a big improvement after boot camp. Based on last night’s game neither Duke or Wisconsin appear to be interested in playing much defense. Things are looking good, stay healthy and stay focused !!
    GO CATS !

Agreed. I feel like most of our players can add to their individual offense.

If Marcus Lee learns to hit a jump shot, if Poythress ever learns to drive the ball, if Karl consistently makes good decisions, etc…

Cal won’t be happy until this team pitches a shutout.

I suspect Coach Cal is pretty happy with this team but that doesn’t mean he is going to stop working to improve their game. Scary has it may sound, we may have some games where we practically shut out the other team.

Kansas is going to get better all year just like every other team. And the more UK plays, the more other teams learn about how to play against them. No matter who the opponent is, every game will be a little bit more difficult than the previous game because there is more available data for every coach to analyze for their game plan.

Though I agree with the logic, all the film in the world won’t matter. It’s not as if teams don’t know what’s coming with our offense. We simply continue to push & execute, battling blow for blow, until the opponent drops their guard & an opening shows itself. And then , with five sets of fresh legs…knockout punch! They have systematically dismantled every opponent thus far with near surgical precision, & I feel that has more do do with teams wearing down over the last 10-15minutes of the game. Every game has been (relatively) close to/past halftime, but they only delay the inevitable! Cats end the game up 20+ every time!
