Cal says he’s proud his team didn’t quit

While Cal admitted that his team didn’t play perfectly–Willie Cauley-Stein was a “non-factor”–he did say that he was proud of his guys for the fight they showed down the stretch tonight in Fayetteville: “I hate losing, but I’m fine,” Cal said. “Those kids did not quit.”

However, there were good freshmen moments and bad freshmen moments.  Good: Andrew and James making threes to keep Kentucky in the game.  Bad: That last play. “My kid watched, my guy watched. And that guy ran by him and dunked it. He’s a freshman, that’s what freshmen do.”

How about the 60 personal fouls called throughout the game? “We were beating the crap out of each other out there. Hand-to-hand combat,” Cal said, pointing out that it was the first team Kentucky has played that’s taken more free throws than them. “You have to give them credit.”

Cal needs to recruit an actual point guard and teach his kids out to shoot free throws. Has he stopped trying after winning the elusive title or what?

Yeah, you’re right, Cal just quit trying after winning the title. It all makes sense now. He doesn’t want to win multiple titles and go down as an all time great, he’s content to lose. I know you’re being facetious with that comment, but from now on, maybe you should try it without being such an idiot.

Blaming officials is for losers. Win this game by 15 like you should and make the refs a non factor.

Not talking about Cal but MANY fans on here tonight.

UK lost to a team that will not make the tournament. All these games at Texas A&M, Missouri, Tennessee, not even talking about Florida (should be a loss really)…

Agreed about blaming refs. The foul count was about even, so even though there were some puzzling ones on our guys, it was a non factor. Turnovers and free throw shooting killed them tonight. Fundamentals, as usual, were the Achilles heel.

What a shame to see no defense during the final minute of the game, and that final Arkansas dunk to win by 2 did not have a single Kentucky player ready to stop that kid from going to the rim! What a let down, close game throughout other than the Arkansas 9 point lead at one point. Good fighting back by Big Blue, but could not finish an important game out!

Worse coaching I have ever seen! Is Randle the only “go to” guy we have????????????

    • love
      12:45 am January 15, 2014 Permalink

Yep,..right on!!!! Worst game coach I’ve ever seen. I told my wife with 12 seconds to go in the first half, I said, ” Cal has no one on the floor who will actually shoot the ball. No one! Poy “might” finish, if someone would actually draw his man off him and throw it to him and he’s wide open. If not,..we have no one on the court that will actually shoot the ball!!! If we lose by two,..it’s because Cal has no one on the court that will shoot it with 12 seconds to go in the first half. We will not get a shot off. Mark my word!!!” Course,…I was right. We did not get a shot off. We lose by two points. But that was NOT the only time Cal had 5 players on the court that are afraid to shoot the ball. That was just one of many times. Cal gives away 20 points per game. And he does not have Anthony Davis in there to make up for his poor game coaching. We have the advantage of size,..and many times tonight he had Lee, Willie AND Dakari on the bench. Let’s go small since they are small. How stupid is that. That you do not take advantage of your size. That’s Tubby stuff. You have games that you don’t shoot well. You have games the other tem has more talent. But seldom do you have 6 or 7 FIVE STAR players and shoot the lights out, you outrebound the opposing team in a major way,..and you still lose. Unless you are Cal. He’ll find a way to lose those kinds of games,…like he did tonight. Let’s play Poy, Hawkins, Lee, Polson and Andrew and then wonder why we did not get a shot
      s off. Simply brilliant!!!!!

      12:42 pm January 15, 2014 Permalink

You are right! Cal’s plays obviously didn’t work! I mean Harrison didn’t get a wide open three to send the game into overtime, he was afraid to shoot obviously, and Young didn’t hit a three to tie the score with 10 seconds left in OT, he must have been afraid to shoot too! No, it wasn’t Cal’s fault we lost this game, his play calls worked fine, it was a lack of production from the foul line and a bone headed failure to box out at the end by kids who were fatigued beyond anything you will ever know! I am sure it is cozy on your perch atop that big soap box, but these kids are doing things that you couldn’t do in your wildest dreams, and they are doing it at the age of 18 years old! What were you doing at the age of 18? That’s what I thought! If you have all the answers, maybe the next time there is an opening for head coach of the UK basketball team you should send your resume. I am sure you are more than qualified! I bet if you had the job the Cats would never lose again!!

I mentioned it in another thread. He was NEVER mentally in this game. His first foul came in the first 20 seconds of the game 85 feet away from the basket. His third foul came from just a guy over. Not sure if his medical condition was making him sluggish, but it was a poor performance. Still, without him, we fought hard. I think this is a turning point for this team. IF, and that’s a BIG IF, we learn to hit FTs, and we play this hard, I think we can go far.

Willis, Hawkins, Lee, and Johnson (at the least) will stay after this season from the current freshman class. What more do you want? If he gets more multiple year guys than that every year, we won’t have enough talent most years to even be in the title discussion at all.

Lets face it this is a good team but will NEVER be a championship team. Cannot depend on only 1 guy who cannot play further than 3 ft. from the basket. Poor shooting again from the foul line costs Cats yet another win. By end of season this will be a mid range seed at best. Regardless what Cal says you will never win big with so little experience. College basketballs most overated team and now will never make the top 10 again this year. I bet Ark. ends up in the NIT. This is a bad loss.

Can we get off the work on free throws kick? If practicing FTs made a huge difference Shaq would have shot 95% at the end of his career. FTs are mostly mental and concentration. It’s not like any of these guys have a Chuck Hayes hitch their motion. I’m sure call has told them to concentrate. If all these guys had poor form then yes correct that. But beyond minor mechanics and a Keep FOCUSED, what is supposed to be “worked on?”

I was very skeptical of this team but must admit that I really think the upside for this team is huge. Free throw shooting bad but we got jobbed tonight by officials. Like Carolina game. Does no one else think this was the most horrific game ever played by a starting pg? Aside from the 3 to tie what did Andrew do? I think 3 of his assists were loose balls he fumbled and luckily wound up in uk players hands for a basket. I see no progress in his game really. Go back and look at his expression when he lost the ball and randle got it an dunked it late in regulation. I wish I had a screen shot of it as espn went to the camera beneath the basket. How many possessions did he just take off out of control to the basket and aimlessly throw the ball toward the basket, and once late he drove left and threw a lob to no one, or a ghost. I don’t blame him because I know the circumstances I just wonder why he’s allowed to do this game after game. I’d bet he played more minutes than anyone tonight

I have said in numerous thread for weeks ago Andrew is not very good, but my main complaint was he was just flat out lazy. This is the first game where he played hard, really hard. The shots weren’t falling on his drives. WCS was sitting on the bench being a non-factor so no alley-oops. If he keeps playing this hard, the team will go far.

They didn’t. They gave up over 40 points to their guards, shot 20% from the outside, and 50% fromn the line. I was VERY critical of Andrew after that game. Lazy passes, bad D, walking the ball up the court, you were just too excited by the win to look at the actual numbers.

I think the Cats are going to be tough to beat on a neutral floor in March. So much length, and you’ve got quality depth this year. Hope you can stay injury free, and good luck the rest of the way in the SEC.
