Cal says he’s proud of Willie

willie15

Everyone’s excited Willie’s returning for his junior season, especially John Calipari. Cal tweeted this moments ago:

I’m happy for Willie and also proud of him for making the best decision for him and his family. Being in school for at least three years will get him closer to having a degree and will help him prepare for the next level and life afterwards.

UK also sent out an official statement about Willie’s return, in which Willie said his desire to win a National Championship and get his degree was too strong to give up for the NBA:

I want to come back and have a chance to win a national championship, while also getting closer to earning my degree,” Cauley-Stein said. “Being at the Final Four this year was special, but not being able to help my teammates on the floor was tough. I look forward to helping us get back there next year, while playing in front of the best fans in the nation.”

This feels appropriate:

Awesome news! I don’t think Johnson will return if WCS is…just too many bigs working for minutes. If the Harrison twins return…UK is is deeper than I can ever remember…maybe 96 was as deep (not debating talent here, just bench depth).

Could be the beginning of players staying 2 years too…with so much depth the freshmen will get reserve minutes and the two year guys will be the starters. I think Cal recruited that way last year with Willis and Hawkins but not sure he thought some guys would stay this year too.

So, Harrell coming back was a mistake and Rick is selfish. Yet, WCS is projected higher and it is great. LMAO.

    • Of course you are....
      7:16 pm April 14, 2014 Permalink

Harrell is not going to improve his stock by returning, so he should go – a la Russ Smiff 2013 (but he didn’t, and now he’s not going where he could have in 2013 after the weak draft+Tourney MVP).

WCS cannot do NBA work outs (which could potentially/will hurt draft stock) and he can actually raise his stock this year.

I know these things are confusing to you Tard fans, but trust the adults when we speak.

Hint: Rick wants Trez to come back for RICK, not Trez. That’s all you really need to know.

I am a uk dan and follow the draft. Russ smith was projected last year late second to undrafted. So, tough to say he was wrong to one back.

………. and he’s still projected mid to late second round.

Shoulda gone in a weak draft.

    • lonnieb
      8:51 pm April 14, 2014 Permalink

Russ was actually projected in the first 5 picks of most mock last year. So yes he should have went last year in theory. He will never matter anyway so…..Spain here russ comes. Small sg with a career field goal % around 40 don’t play in the nba sorry. Not from 3 either that’s his actual fg%

This is great news. And I have always expected Dakari to return for another year, although who could blame him if he moves on? But I get the sense he’ll return as well, and moreover I hope he does. He’s a pleasure to watch play. There are not that many old school low post players these days. He’s a dandy.

My favorite news in a long time. Can you imagine these big dudes playing a zone for goodness sakes??Next year is gonna be fun !!

    • lonnieb
      8:59 pm April 14, 2014 Permalink

No zone please……good teams don’t zone. You noticed we played mostly man to man at the end of the season sec and big tourney. Zone is a gimmick……Willie and Marcus lee are perfect for man to man…they are big fast and athletic and can guard whoever on the switches. There is a reason none of the elite teams ever play zone except cuse…..its weak and intelligent decent shooting teams can beat it all day

Of course Cal is holding these guys back for his own personal gain. The nerve. This ticks me off more than when he pushes guys to the nba draft to make his # of players in the nba go up. Why can’t he do things the right way? Dude is batting 1.000 and by 1.000 I mean .000

#24-Spit your brothers nuts out. Johnson really worries me, for his sake. I’m affraid he’ll disappear uf he leaves this year. He’s very slow and very limited offensively. He needs to come back..period.

Thank you Willie!! I sure hope Dakari stays because Willie needs to expand his game to the four position and an outside shot. Come on Twins, let’s finish what you guys help start.

  27. catfanmike

I can see Trez and Willie coming back because with another year they both could improve their jump shots and move up in what they are saying should be a weaker draft. No matter what, some guys like the college experience and I’m glad there are guys that aren’t afraid to come back even if they already are 1st rounders

I am truly thrilled that WCS is doing the right thing for himself, albeit we, as fans, get to basque in the reward of having another talented big man returning. I think that the Harrison twins would be smart to follow suit. The twins will likely never get to play with one another again in the event they decide to go pro this season. They improved so much in the last quarter of the season and in the tourneys. They would both be lottery next year and get guaranteed $. As it stands, I think Andrew is the only one in that position. No matter what, I wish to thank these young men for the huge turnaround and outrageously insane tournament experience they led.
