Cal reveals tweak #2 and #3

Screen Shot 2014-04-15 at 8.45.59 AM

Today, John Calipari is making the rounds in Bristol at the ESPN headquarters, and is kicking off the “carwash” with an appearance on “Mike and Mike.” Cal co-hosted an hour of the show, and used the opportunity to reveal tweaks #2 and #3.

Cal said tweak #2 was getting Julius Randle to do less offensively, which he did by showing him tapes of Zach Randolph and telling him to only score off passes from Andrew.

“We gotta narrow what you’re doing. Less is more, less is more. Let’s look at the tape of Zach Randolph, 6’9″, 6’11” wingspan, exactly like you and a lefty. We went through it, ‘tell me what you’re seeing.’ ‘He gets to his left hand.’ Yeah, because he doesn’t mess with the ball,” Cal said. “Julius, that’s you, but if you mess with the ball, they’re going to jump on that left hand and you’ve gotta go right. And then I said, ‘the only time I want you to score is off a pass from Andrew. You’re not gonna be out here trying to create all sorts of craziness because it’s creating turnovers for you and our team. Well, he ended up going double-double, double-double through the NCAA Tournament, and he passed more, which again led James and Aaron to open up their games.”

Tweak #3? Changing the offense against the zone before the Louisville game. “Here’s our offense versus zone, it is gonna be simpler, this is all we’re doing. Again, all I was trying to do is take the weight off their shoulders, make the game simpler, and make it so that ‘you just made the game easier for me, Coach, thank you.'”

It worked.

Yeah but, Zach Randolph has an enormous wingspan, like 7’3″ ,not sure where Cal got his numbers.

Wow. What a coaching genius! Can we ask him to turn his mighty mind to the Ukranian issue?

He was humble enough to admit that things weren’t working well enough to win and to make changes to fix those things.

He was smart enough to make the changes that needed to be made.

“Genius” – no. But it’s a lot better than previous coaches who sat on the sideline with befuddled looks on their faces (or smirks) while the one thing they wanted to do failed mightily.

The word used was “tweak”. Did you expect some elaborate information based on this word? It’s good for a big time coach to be willing to make adjustments based on personnel. I wonder what adjustments Coach K made this year in his defensive strategies since they had no size?

Tweak sounds too close to twerk. And, twerk makes me think of incurable pathogens.

I think the coach did an outstanding job this year. Took his young team down to the final game. He didn’t listen to his critics, he kept going and teaching his team, and making changes to try to help the team come together. More so he took ownership of things that were his responsibility and always tried to come up with a solution. What a class act. This team beat 3 of the teams from last year’s Final Four. Wichita State (35,0) Louisville(Former National Champions), and Michigan. Then on to beat a very talented Wisconsin team from the Big Ten. To finally meet UConn for the championship. I have to hand it to the coach, he knows what he is doing. It was another good year.

    Elite 8 in 2010, Final Four 2011, National Championship 2012, National Championship Runner-up 2014.

I don’t know of any coaches right now with that type of current working resume. He has done an outstanding job at Kentucky.

Coach Cal is an amazing take Freshman to the National Championship Game was simply amazing. If anyone followed the team, anyone knew it was a struggle from day one..What Coach Cal did was he tried several things during the year and nothing was working, then he finally found what was working and a good coach will always stick with what works. Terrific job Coach Cal..

Inbred UK fans will believe any crap that spews out of this eggheads mouth. There were NO tweaks and they certainly didn’t “WORK”..
It was simply a tactic to attempt to remain relevant as Calipari felt his program slipping into yet another >10 loss season with an exclamation point on the end with a first round loss.
UK played as crappy as ever… but had a “Very unlikely and lucky run” as described by every major sports commentator in the country. the only reason UK made it as far as they did is the other team beating themselves (missed freethrows) and a LOT of help from the fellas in Black and white. It was clear as day that the refs were cheating for UK and lot of commentators called them out on it.

The tweak didn’t “work”, as you put it, because if i remember correctly Louisville lead 38 of the 40 minutes of play. And UK’s “Luck” only started to show after 3 fouls were made up against Harrell to put him out of the game(Please see article, it is objective and and not written for any one team.. and there are plenty others like it).

    Most undeserved (Cheated) run ever.

As much as you tried to sound literate and educated in your post, you sounded like a butt hurt fan of a team that didn’t make it as far in the tournament.. saying that the refs were on UKs side is as insane as your mother deciding not to abort you. Everyone hangs on to Cal having wins revoked to make excuses for his success at Kentucky which again just shows a lack of intelligence.. If you knew this team, as true fans did, you would’ve seen the change in attitude and selflessness in these kids to come together and fight until the buzzer sounded. And they did fight until the end of every game because what you call luck others with a brain in their head call a will to win.. Sure they got beat by UCONN but so did 3 or 4 other teams that easily could’ve ended up winning the championship.. They played strong in every game and shot the ball well which got them a banner in their rafters, congratulations to Kevin Ollie and his team.. I’m not saying that every argument against Kentucky is wrong, I’m just saying yours was horrible..

You must’ve earned your doctorate from Louisville. What was it for? Posting cry-baby articles about bad officiating from “major” sports commentators on rival teams fansites perhaps? Take your doctorate and shove it.

It is amazing so many that want to put UK down and the team or teams they follow didn’t even get close to what the Cats did this year. Cats will be back next year and they will “WIN” it all!!
