Cal checks in from Florida, compares the process of recovery to building a team

calbeach

It’s only been about a week and a half since Cal had his hip replacement and went to Florida for rehab, but he couldn’t stay away from the BBN any longer. Cal wrote a post for his blog in which he compared the process of recovery to building a team. You have take each one step at a time:

The physical therapist came and met with me yesterday and we went out and walked for a bit. As we were getting done with physical therapy, he turns to me and says, “I know how much you want to skip steps and get this over with, but you just can’t. Your body won’t allow it. Just do a little bit more every day. If you get to the point where you’re trying to do too much, pull back.”

He then looked me dead in the eye and said, “No matter how much you want it to, you’re not going to make this go faster than it’s supposed to go. It’s a process”

Sound familiar? I told him, “Jeez, this sounds like building a basketball team with a bunch of freshmen.”

Leave it to Cal to find a coaching lesson in everything. Don’t walk too fast to that fro-yo line now, Cal. One step at a time.

He looks like a relaxed man, I have never seen that side of him! A little R&R will be good !

Except it might not be the best idea to “fail fast” in this scenario. “Enjoy the ride”?

My mom had a hip replacement in April of 2013. During the surgery she ended up with what was referred to as a drop foot. It took her seven months to recover and it was very difficult. Cal needs to follow every step and complete his rehab in an intelligent way. Good Luck!

Anthony Davis had the fifth most points on the team, we’re a young team, I like my team, I’m coaching 18 year olds, this is a process, but I like my team.

Generally speaking, hip replacements are the easiest to recover from. Knees replacements are a different story. Been there, done that with amazing success.
