BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Who Is The Player Who Makes You Hate Tennessee?

There is something about living in Louisville that makes being a UK fan a different experience than the rest of the state.  On the one hand, yes, you are around UL fans more and thus see the negative side of their fanbase more often.  And those negative people do exist, just as they do in our fanbase.  But, on the other hand, you also deal with some great UL fans often too.  Hell, I have a bunch of them in my family.  They are great fans of their team, but it just happens to be our main rival.

For me, the fanbase that I hate the worst in TENNESSEE.  I hate them because their attitude is undeserved.  Look, UK fans are cocky about their basketball team.  And we’ve earned it with 8 national titles and 181 conference titles.  Tennessee, on the basketball side, seems to have a cockiness that is undeserved.  Have they ever been to the Final Four?  Bruce Pearl got that program to a very respectable place, and he cheated to do it.  On the football end, they WERE a once great program, but I’m sorry, that time has passed.  San Francisco once won 2 straight national titles but I don’t hear their fans squawking.  Then on top of that, the players they usually have on the basketball team have been the most unlikeable in the SEC.  Wayne Chism, Scotty Hopson, Ron Slay, just to name a few.  But my guy who made me hate Tennessee more than anyone was Tony Harris.  Here is what I wrote about Tony Harris during Tennessee Hate Day on this website a few years back:

“Yeah BI***!!  I am whippin your a** (as he scores his 4th point of the game with 3 minutes to go).  You ho’s can’t stop me (as UT claws it’s way back within 15 of UCONN).”

And then Harris would proceed to cheap shot somebody for his 5th foul, and then continue to talk sh** to everybody who would listen, which would be nobody.

And the thing about Harris too was he had Pacman Jones syndrome.  He wasn’t that great, yet thought he was the most awesome player since Wilt.  And he did it all while on a mediocre UT team.

Here’s another analogy:  Tony Harris was like Don Barzini in the Godfather.  He was cocky, thought he was the best Don, and tried to murder Don Corleone (in this case Tayshaun Prince).  But then he gets shot by the Corleone’s coming out of courthouse.

I’ll be honest, I don’t care if you talk smack.  Lebron James can talk smack, Tyler Hansborough can talk smack, Jodie Meeks can talk smack.  Tony Harris CAN NOT talk smack.  Wayne Chism CAN NOT talk smack.  JP Prince CAN NOT talk smack.  The only guy I can remember that could talk smack at UT was Chris Lofton, and he never did AND battled cancer.

Tony Harris is Tennessee athletics for me.  I don’t have daily interaction with their fanbase so I can only develop why I hate them from the worst of the worst.  Much in the same way that many of you out in the state only develop your UL feelings from seeing and hearing about the worst of the worst.

So, am I in this boat alone that Tennessee is more hate-worthy than Louisville, or are there many of you that feel the same way?

I don’t really care enough about UT basketball to hate them. As for football, I’m madder about our tendency to give the game away than anything to do with their team. My in-laws cheer for UT, so I definitely want to win to shut them up.

I am of the belief that a good SEC football fan supports the conference as a whole, but I also think you get 1 team that you always want to lose. Auburn and Alabama probably choose each other, Ole Miss and MSU choose each other. For me, I choose to hate Tennessee.

Mississippi teams/fans also hate LSU, and the feeling is mutual.

It’s their fan base and home town media. In any situation, they spin it so they are the greatest ever.

I liked slay, but Harris was obnoxious. Those teams were incredibly talented, should have done more with what they had. Honestly, the person that makes me hate Tennessee the most is CMS for habitually getting his ass handed to him in those games. I saw him at keeneland spring meet in 2019, standing in the concourse with his security detail desperate to be noticed by fans. I greeted him, which made him very happy, and let him know I’d appreciate it if he’d stop giving away games to terrible Tennessee teams. All I got for a response was his trademark dumbass deer in the headlights gaze.

No one. They would have to be on the same level as Kentucky Basketball for me to even care.

This is the only correct answer. I’m not sure why I hated him so much (his teams were only 2-6 against Kentucky in his career), but it seemed like he played at Tennessee for a decade.

Charles Black. Dirtiest player in CBB history. Voted dirtiest in the SEC by the players. Tried to seriously injure Ron Mercer
with an illegal, and cheap shot, screen.

Everybody that has, does or ever will play for any team the dirty vols field. I lived in Franklin, KY and Scottsville, KY two godforsaken towns that have the bad fortune of being on the TN border…the fans that pull for UK bball then pull for UT football are the worst!
