BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: SEC Power Rankings, Week 3

#14. (LW: 14) South Carolina (7-12, 0-6, RPI: 144)
This Week: Lost at Georgia by 21, Lost at Missouri by 8
-SEC Pillow Fight of the Year against Auburn on Feb. 5.  Won’t be many wins before or after that.

#13. (LW:13) Auburn (8-9, 0-6, RPI: 193)
This Week: Lost at Mississippi State by 8, Lost at Arkansas by 19
-Losses by just a little less than USC, so they remain out of the cellar.  For now.

#12. (LW: 12) Alabama (9-10, 3-3, RPI: 86)
This Week: Lost to Florida by 6, Beat LSU by 2
-Had a chance for signature win against UF, but blew it.  Slipping past LSU saved week.

#11 (LW: 11) Vanderbilt (10-8, 2-4, RPI: 84)
This Week: Lost to Ole Miss by 11, Won at Texas A&M by 11
-Weirdest team in the league to predict right now.  Even still, this team is headed to the CBI or worse.

#10. (LW: 9) Mississippi State (13-6, 3-3, RPI: 135)
This Week: Beat Auburn by 8, Lost at Ole Miss by 19
-Smoke and mirrors a bit by the Bulldogs.  But when they lose, they lose big.

#9.  (LW: 5) Texas A&M (12-7, 3-3, RPI: 131)
This Week: Lost at Kentucky by 17, Lost to Vanderbilt by 11
-Worst week for any SEC team, maybe some flaws finally being exploited.  Vandy loss very poor.

#8. (LW: 8) Arkansas (13-6, 2-4, RPI: 75)
This Week: Lost at Tennessee by 7, Beat Auburn by 19
-Mike Anderson is now 4-108 on the road at Arkansas.  You can fact check that, but I think that’s right

#7. (LW: 10) LSU (12-6, 3-3, RPI: 62)
This Week: Beat Missouri by 6, Lost at Alabama by 2
-You HAVE to beat Alabama to be a contender in this league.  They didn’t.

#6. (LW: 6) Georgia (10-8, 4-2, RPI: 119)
This Week: Beat South Carolina by 21, Lost at Kentucky by 25
-The UK game exposed this team is still not an elite squad.  But they have proven to be a top half of the league team.

#5. (LW: 4) Tennessee (12-7, 3-3, RPI: 52)
This Week: Beat Arkansas by 7, Lost at Florida by 26
-Florida was a statement opportunity that turned into a statement thud.  Not sure this team is NCAA-caliber yet.

#4. (LW: 3) Missouri (15-4, 3-3, RPI: 56)
This Week: Lost at LSU by 6, Beat South Carolina by 8
-Frank Haith is their coach and everything average about them says Frank Haith.

#3. (LW: 7) Ole Miss (14-5, 5-1, RPI: 58)
This Week: Won at Vanderbilt by 11, Beat Mississippi State by 19
-This team is going to try and make the NCAA Tournament again the way they are playing.

#2. (LW: 2) Kentucky (15-4, 5-1 RPI: 12)
This Week: Beat Texas A&M by 17, Beat Georgia by 25
-After dominating week, clear the league is a 2-horse race.  But until Florida loses, Cats stay at number 2.

#1. (LW: 1) Florida (17-2, 6-0, RPI: 5)
This Week: Won at Alabama by 6, Beat Tennessee by 26
-This team still isn’t the greatest offense in the world, but they defend better than anybody in the league by far.

There are only 2 NCAA caliber teams here and if any other get in it is out of pity for the SEC

They said that last year and Ole Miss beat Wisconsin in the tourney…

4 to 5 teams are good enough to play in the tourney. For some reason SEC teams choke against terrible schools and make themselves look horrible when they really aren’t that bad.

But the SEC as a whole is still a pretty weak conference.

When you have to fill out a 68 team bracket, you get some not so great teams, no matter what conference.

ESPN classic will replay the UK-LSU basketball game from 1989 at UK, at 1pm-3pm ET today. They will also show the UK-LSU game from 1994 at LSU, at 5pm-7pm ET today.

Ole Miss lost at home to Dayton. The SEC is horrible.

If UK wins the next 3 games and in convincing manner, then I will truly believe they have turned the corner. As it has been said many times, UK is everyones “biggest game” and usually play out their minds. So if they play as a team, play solid, and win these games. Then I think they can do do some real damage in the tournament. Of course, if they look bad and timid, then they probably wont make it past second round. Thats just my opinion. The next week or so will tell me so much …

I disagree that they’re a second round out if they look bad in these next few games. The Knight team didn’t really turn the corner until just a few games before the SEC tourney, and that season ended well. I think every team just matures at their own speed when you have such a young group every year.

I am pretty sure that the SEC as whole was much better then. So losses were expected. Losing to LSU, well … no way it should happen. But, I hope you are right. I really do.
