BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: SEC Basketball, It’s FAAAAAANNNNNtastic

Outside of Florida and maybe Missouri, SEC basketball has been less than impressive in the first 2 months of the season.  Take a look at each of the 13 other SEC teams, their quality wins, losses, and current RPI.  The

Quality Wins: Ummmmmmm……Texas Tech?
Losses: Oklahoma, Duke, Drexel, South Florida, Wichita State, Xavier
RPI: 129

Quality Wins: Ummmmmmm…..Clemson?
Losses: California, Gonzaga
RPI: 54

AUBURN (6-3)
Quality Wins: Ummmmmm…….Boston College?
Losses: Northwestern State, Iowa State, Illinois
RPI: 195

Quality Wins: Kansas, Memphis…..thank god
Losses: Wisconsin, UCONN
RPI: 15

Quality Wins: Ummmmmm……..Wofford?
Losses: Georgia Tech, Davidson, Temple, Nebraska

LSU (8-2)
Quality Wins: Butler (if we consider them quality anymore)
Losses: UMASS, Memphis (Kentucky likely to make it the Calipari triple in January)
RPI: 20

Quality Wins: South Florida??????
Losses: Utah State, TCU
RPI: 192

Quality Wins: UCLA
Losses: Illinois
RPI: 25

OLE MISS (8-3)
Quality Wins: Ummmmmm……Georgia Tech?
Losses: Kansas State, Oregon, Mercer
RPI: 48

Quality Wins: Hahahahaha……
Losses: Baylor, Clemson, Oklahoma State, Manhattan, USC-Upstate
RPI: 174

Quality Wins: Xavier???
Losses: Xavier, UTEP, Wichita State, NC State
RPI: 94

TEXAS A&M (8-3)
Quality Wins: Comically we will say Houston
Losses: Missouri State, SMU, Oklahoma
RPI: 146

Quality Wins: Once again….Georgia Tech?
Losses: Butler, Providence, Texas
RPI: 70

So Cats fans, are we disappointed once again with the quality of SEC basketball?  I know I am.  Kentucky has not shown us much in big games this season, and unfortunately they won’t face many more opportunities in the conference play.  Two games against Florida and one against Missouri might be it.

Know it’s not much, but South Carolina beat St. Mary’s last night. They were 9-0, but no impressive wins really.

Didn’t Florida lose to Arizona and not Wisconsin?

Florida lost to Wisconsin, but they were missing Wilbekin, and will be a dangerous team when healthy and when Chris Walker joins them since they are well coached.

Not the toughest league for sure but you can count on just about every team being fired up and playing their best game against UK. Some random guy will hit a career high in most every game. Doesn’t help our strength ratings but does make our guys tougher.

Your pessimistic post are terrible. I come to this site to read positive news about my team, not your doom and gloom crap. They should remove you and the not jerry Tipton guy.

You’re right, the SEC is awesome. My bad. Good response.

our quality wins this year? there’s a difference between pessimism and realism.

There are a few teams in the conference like LSU that are on an up-tick. They just beat UAB (who beat UNC) by 23. Granted it is UAB.

    Arkansas also beat Minnesota.

Alabama has struggled to get wins, but they were right there with both Duke and Wichita State. So they’re not completely awful.

There will probably be one or two more chances for a quality win in the SEC tournament. Kentucky is going to have to impress against unranked opponents. I wouldn’t mind seeing them destroy a few.

Ole Miss lost to Oregon in OT. It sucks, but a lot of these teams were right there in some of their bigger games and just couldn’t finish. Like South Carolina vs. Baylor, Ole Miss vs Oregon, Alabama vs. Wichita State, Vandy with Butler and Texas

I have been trying to get the Email address of Mike Slive with no results. He needs to do something about the annual weakness of SEC basketball. It seems that all he cares about is FOOTBALL.
It is time to set some goals that have rewards and penalties. SEC basketball has been Kentucky and maybe one other team for decades. We need a Comish that cares about more than one sport.

My job is the same as the writers of this website–cater to the markets and consumers of the teams in this conference. Unfortunately for you Mike, the fans of this conference are football consumers by a mile–hell I could probably get better tv ratings off a recruiting special this time of year than some of our crappy basketball games. I understand it sucks for you as a UK fan but if you really want to be in a basketball conference you should have propositioned the ACC to take you instead of Louisville.

The conference was down last season, and has a few teams that are getting better. However, 2 years ago the SEC was not that bad in basketball. You’ll see some bad losses, but you’ll also see a lot of good wins. A few off the top of my head, Georgia beat Notre Dame, Arkansas beat Michigan, Florida beat Florida State, UK beat everybody they played, Marquette and Vandy beat Marquette, I think Bama beat Purdue, and Wichita State, UT beat UConn…

Also, the SEC has 6 championships over the past 19 years. The Big 10 (for reference) has 1 since 1990.

Only 3 schools care about basketball period! Kentucky, Florida, and Vandy but they tank recently. Living here in Alabama, most Bama mock basketball as a quote “sissy” sport. What is crazy to be living in such a football driven state it produces really good basketball talent but most choose to go out of state to schools that actually care about hoops.

I meant to say LSU beat Marquette

Just another reason that Cal might want to balance recuiting a bit to assure a better mix of freshman talent and good experience. Not winning against the quality teams in the pre-conference schedule could be the difference in a 2 or 3 seed and a 4 or 5 seed in the post season. I believe they will be tough in March, but I’d like to see a lower seed than they likely will have. There’s alot to be said about balance-just sayin.

How do you think UK has 2,000 wins? They’ve been beating up on football schools for 100 years.

I only see three SEC teams making the tourney this year; Forida, Kentucky and Mizzou. The rest of the league is pretty mediocre to terrible. Fourteen teams and only three decent ones, that’s crazy.

==== You obviously haven’t seen very much SEC basketball compared to yours truly and that’s a fact jack !

The SEC teams just lie in wait for the Cats all year ……… teams that draw 5,000 fans for a conference foe suddenly have 12,000 for a visit from the Cats !!!!

Any SEC team can beat another on any given night ………….

Tough games lie ahead ….. wait and see
