BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Is the UL Game Just “Gravy”?

I don’t think it’s any insult to the players or coaches to say the last couple weeks of UK results have been surprising.  The loss at Florida at the end of the year did not give fans much confidence in what the SEC and NCAA Tournaments would possibly result in.  But the last 2 weeks have truly been a joy to watch, even with the loss to Florida in Atlanta thrown in there.  This team is finally playing up to it’s potential and now, all of the sudden, a Final Four is not out of the realm of possibility.  But following the win over Wichita State yesterday, I saw a sentiment repeated several times on social media that “everything from here on out is bonus”.  That’s essentially because this team has “overachieved” from where we thought they could go 2 weeks ago – any more success would just be bonus.  The word used often is gravy.

Others I am sure would argue that now that this team is playing at a much higher level, the expectations have changed.  That losing to a UL team you’ve already beaten and who didn’t exactly look like world beaters in their first 2 games would be a disappointment.  And the fact it is Louisville we will be playing only adds to this feeling.  Some fans would argue whether Kentucky is a 5 point underdog or a 55 point underdog, losing to Louisville is never OK.  I’d like to think if Kentucky was playing Arizona in the Sweet 16 that fans would be more willing to look at the big picture and consider this run a success even with a loss.  But if the Cardinals are the team that ends your season, it will be a sour taste.

Personally, I think now that we have seen just how good this team can be, the expectations have to change.  And with those changing expectations come the belief that losing to Louisville will not be OK.  Doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate what the last 2-3 weeks will mean.  It just means this team will have left some wins on the table.  I mostly don’t want to lose to Louisville because it basically eliminates the win from earlier in the season AND takes away a little bit of the joy of beating them in the 2012 Final Four.  That being said, if the Harrisons play like they have been, I see no reason the Cats will not win on Friday night.

So, what about you?  Has the bar changed for this team or is anything that happens from here on out just bonus from where this team finished the regular season?

The bar can’t be moved up and down. We strive for excellence and expect it. This is Kentucky and we don’t settle. If we did our neighbors up the road would call us little brother instead.

Are you keeping track of this tourney? Hell No, the rest isn’t gravy! With UK’s talent, size, coaching and momentum….they can win this whole thing. My expectations were not real high for the Wichita St game, but they are now. I would be very surprised if UK loses to UL….really surprised. UK has a major size advantage in the front and backcourt. UL has struggled against Manhattan/St. Louis, and this UL team was swept by Memphis. Memphis gave them problems inside and with penetration from the PG into the lane. I see UK by double digits against UL and in the elite 8, we can defeat Mich or Tenn! WE ARE THE MOST TALANTED TEAM LEFT, WE ARE THE BIGGEST TEAM LEFT, WE ARE THE BEST REBOUNDING TEAM LEFT. Gravy???? NO

    • 2mites
      9:34 am March 24, 2014 Permalink

I agree whole heartily that UK is now in a very favorable position. UL will be tough but I really expect the Cats to win by at least 8. The only team left in the tourney that UK could have real problems with is the Gators. Can they make it to the final 4 if so it could be another match up for the 4th time and then expect another classic.

I have posted on more than one occasion here that these players were going to get it. This is not the same weak-minded team of last year. This team was much more akin to 2011.

I posted several times how this team would get it, just like the Fab 5 did in their Freshmen year after losing 9 games and being a 6 seed with little expectations of making a title game.

Too many trolls come to this site and pose as UK fans, it’s true….but there WERE plenty of UK fans including Drew and Matt that had lost all hope. Sometimes you gotta step back, breathe, and hit delete instead of send.

Maybe its just because I live 30 miles from the KU campus and my “Kentucky basketball is superior to everything else” brain kicks in but I always look at anything less than a final four as a disapointment. Any thing less than Sweet Sixteen is embarrassing. I do not think this next game is gravy for them. I do think they will win as Louisville struggles with long athletic teams. But it won’t be an easy win. Their will be no easy wins for the rest of the year. If they get by Louisville. Michigan and Tennessee are playing great ball and then you have the final four. There are no easy wins in the final four.

The bar has changed but that’s because the coaches and players raised it. They proved they are great. Whatever round we go down in (if we go down) I want to go down playing our best and with the best effort. Then regardless of who it is, this season will feel like a success.

I was driving through Florence this weekend and the most white trashed up Mustang I have ever seen passed me in the left lane; matted black paint, smoked plastic covers on every light, tinted windows – the whole package. The driver was wearing a flat brim cap and pulling a Detroit lean while talking on his cell.

The car passed on by and I saw U of L vanity plates and thought to myself “Well, obviously”.

I would have agreed with the gravy thought all year but the total incompetence of the ncaa selectors has changed that conception. Now we are left with almost a repeat of the SEC tourney and our regular season so we have a great opportunity to exceed prior reasonable expectations, especially considering the current rapid improvement we have seen. If these young kids ever put 2 halves together any opponent will be in serious trouble.

Ultimately, when and if we lose, it will be an upsetting day. After beating Ohio ST in 2011, was anyone satisfied at that point? No. We had UNC looming and everyone could taste the FF. After winning we got UConn again and that loss hurt as bad as any. Knowing that the title is within grasp will always trump any moral victories or provide “gravy” on top of the potatoes. Why not win the whole thing? I want Florida in the championship. How sweet would it be to beat them to complete the title run?

Let’s Review what Cal’s done since he arrived:

    Elite 8
    Final Four
    NIT crash & burn
Sweet 16 (If it ends Friday)

15-3 in NCAA Tourney Since he has arrived on the UK Campus.

A loss Friday (and last year’s debacle) would leave us all bad burb to taste, but peeps.. that is quite a 5 year meal. The man is delivering! Already, it is hard to find many 5 year spans to match it in UK history.

A vote for GRAVY with a twist. But since it would be U of L twice in 1 season and the 2nd in the NCAA Tourney, I would say a most delicious DESSERT on hardy 5 year run for Kentucky Basketball.

We are Kentucky. Our expectations don’t change with our opponent, which tournament we are in, or how and where we are seeded. We expect victory. To win the championship, we have to beat three or four really good teams. We shouldn’t care what name is on the jersey. Just play hard and win. We are UK!!!

Expectations do change. If you expect the title or final four every year you’re delusional. I expected a couple losses and a good shot at the title this year. After a little while, I had to lower my expectations. Sometimes I raise my expectations if the team starts clicking better than expected. Either way, I’m a big fan and I enjoy the ride every season and want it to go as long as it can.

The kids have done well! Go CATS. Playing with a compressed expectation for freshmen to play like seniors is a tall order. Suffice to say, did anyone ever doubt that Kentucky will beat Wichita State? There were many but few would have the guts to come forth and acknowledge their lack of faith in this team moving forward. Even Matt Jones in his pregame show with Oscar Combs vacillated between beating the shockers and losing to the shockers. I for one reminded many of my friends to give the kids a chance to play and felt like the game was theirs for the taking if they so desire to. The kids have done well. As we cheer them on, the goal to beat the Cards and to move on to the finals must remain their goal and if it is, they will win it all. They have the talent and the support of a great coaching staff and an awesome fan base. Yes they are young but now is the time to shine! Go CATS.

Based on their overall performance this season, I stated at the start of the tournament that a sweet sixteen appearance would be “over achieving” and be something worth celebrating. I am sticking to that. This team improves, yes. It also gets worse. We could easily beat UL Friday, and we could just as easily collapse. I really hope we beat UL, but if we don’t, i am already impressed with what the team managed to pull together in the end. Go Cats.
