BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: History Says Georgia Has No Chance Tonight

This is a very specific stat but it definitely applies to tonight’s game against Georgia.  There have been 15 times in the Calipari tenure where his teams have beaten an SEC opponent on the road and then had a 2nd game in Rupp Arena that same season.  Fifteen times where teams had a chance to get some revenge on the Cats on their home floor.  And in those 15 occurrences:

2010
FLORIDA: Game 1 – Win by 12, Game 2 – Win by 8

2011
SOUTH CAROLINA: Game 1 – Win by 9, Game 2 – Win by 31

2012
TENNESSEE: Game 1 – Win by 3, Game 2 – Win by 25
GEORGIA: Game 1 – Win by 13, Game 2 – Win by 30
VANDERBILT: Game 1 – Win by 6, Game 2  – Win by 9

2013
VANDERBILT: Game 1 – Win by 2, Game 2 – Win by 4
AUBURN: Game 1 – Win by 22, Game 2 – Win by 10

2015
ALABAMA: Game 1 – Win by 22, Game 2 – Win by 15
SOUTH CAROLINA: Game 1 – Win by 15, Game 2 – Win by 34
FLORIDA: Game 1 – Win by 7, Game 2 – Win by 17

2016
ALABAMA: Game 1 – Win by 16, Game 2 – Win by 25

2017
VANDERBILT: Game 1 – Win by 6, Game 2 – Win by 6

2018
VANDERBILT: Game 1 – Win by 7, Game 2 – Win by 2

2019
AUBURN: Game 1 – Win by 2, Game 2 – Win by 27
FLORIDA: Game 1 – Win by 11, Game 2 – Win by 9

UK is 15-0 in rematch games at Rupp Arena when UK has won the 1st meeting.  Average margin of victory in the 1st game: 10.2.  Average margin of victory in the 2nd game: 16.8.  Kentucky is not good enough to take any opponent this year lightly.  Evansville and South Carolina should have taught them that.  But Calipari teams typically do quite well in rematch scenarios, especially when they already won the first game.

I think that run at Arkansas could prove to be the turning point in this season, as almost all Calipari teams have, where they go from work in progress to March threat.  This will not be one of Calipari’s best teams no matter what.  The talent just isn’t there.  But this is also a very down year in college basketball and from what I have seen there is no reason this team isn’t good enough to make a run at a Final Four.  But they certainly would need to continue the trend above to keep that opinion moving forward.  And I have no reason to believe they want.  Take the Cats and the points tonight!

If Cal gets kicked out again they won’t.
