University of Kentucky Basketball, Football, and Recruiting news brought to you in the most ridiculous manner possible.

BREAKING: Devin Askew will transfer from Kentucky

Kentucky freshman guard Devin Askew has decided to transfer out of the program.

In an interview with Travis Branham of 247Sports, Askew says he will put his name in the transfer portal to “explore a new opportunity” elsewhere.

“I am thankful for the opportunity I had to play basketball at the University of Kentucky,” said Askew. “I am also thankful for the coaching staff as they provided an experience that contributed to my development in this game I love. My teammates will be my friends forever and I appreciate how they pushed me day in and day out to get better.”

“With that being said,” he continued. “It will be part of my growth in this game to explore a new opportunity and enter the transfer portal.”

This news comes just over three weeks after Askew’s father, Brian, told KSR the former five-star prospect was “locked in” for the 2021-22 season.

“Yes sir, (Devin) is locked in for next season,” Askew told KSR on March 12. “… Dev is doing well. Sucks they lost but can’t dwell on it too long. Have to get back to work and get ready for next year.”

Despite penciling himself back into the rotation immediately after the season, Kentucky has continued to recruit point guards at the high school level and through the transfer portal, an indication that John Calipari remains uncertain about the immediate future of the position. He expressed his concerns publicly on numerous occasions throughout the season.

Following Kentucky’s loss at Georgia back in January, the UK head coach said Askew needed to dribble the ball less and find spot-up shooting opportunities as an off-ball player.

“Here’s how I want Devin to play so you all know: I don’t want him to have a lot of dribbles,” Calipari said at the time. “I want him to get it up and get away from the ball. The reason I like that is because away from the ball, he can make plays and he can make shots. On the ball where everyone is watching him, he’s not effective. He’s just not.

“… Less dribbles, get rid of the ball, go away from the ball and when it comes to you, make plays. Again, he’s a respectful kid, I just don’t know if he’s hearing what we’re trying to get him to do. He will.”

As a freshman, Askew finished the season averaging 6.5 points on 34.5% shooting, 27.8% from three and 80.6% from the line to go with 2.9 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 0.9 steals in 29.0 minutes per game.

Despite Askew’s first-year struggles, the freshman guard originally told KSR back in March 2020 that he refused to follow in the footsteps of past West Coast talent who decided to transfer out of the program, promising to “fight through adversity” as a Wildcat.

“I’m different. I’m way different,” Askew told KSR at the time. “I live on the West Coast, but I don’t play like a West Coast player at all. Nope. I play like an East Coast kid. I like to be physical, that’s just my game. Even though those are all great players (Johnny Juzang, Jemarl Baker and Kyle Wiltjer) and they all had fun while they were at Kentucky, they just wanted to do something that was better for them. But I’m different.

“… I know I’m going to fight through adversity,” Askew continued. “If I don’t get out after one year [to the NBA], I’m staying at Kentucky. I’m going to grind it out for sure.”

Originally brought in to be a multi-year player, the former five-star prospect will explore his options after just one season in Lexington.

UPDATE (4:08 PM): Kentucky has confirmed that Askew has entered the transfer portal to continue his career elsewhere.

“This is the part of the business I hate,” UK head coach John Calipari said. “I wish I could coach every kid for four years, but I have to respect Devin’s decision and I do. I will always be here to help him. My hope – and I told him this – is that he takes the fight he learned here with him wherever he goes. He was a great teammate and improved in so many ways as the season wore on. I will be rooting for Devin as he takes this next step.”

How about we show a little class. It wasn’t Askew’s fault that he did not have the skill set needed to play point guard at a high DI school. It was a bad recruitment decision and that’s on the staff. To his credit, Askew played hard and maintained a great attitude. He deserves our respect and best wishes. Good luck young man.

You can’t blame any UK Basketball Player who wants to get out of Lexington and away from Coach PROCESS and his PROCESS!

Reporters, analysts, broadcasters, and most of BBN -with the exception of a few who missed the bus years ago… WE ALL know what and WHO is promoting the exodus from Lexington…

The only issue? It’s the players who are now leaving and NOT THE COACH!

Kinda like tossing out the fine China, and keeping the dishwater!

You can call it bad or being a toxic fan, but this is easily a good choice for both parties. There’s never been a worse player to play 30 minutes a game at UK and why calipari played him so much is beyond me. He wasn’t going to improve that much over one year and if Cal decided to play him a lot of minutes next year you best believe UK fans would let him hear it. Please let this be the last west coast player that comes to UK, at least in the Cal era.

    • ComfortablyNumb94
      4:28 pm April 5, 2021 Permalink

I agree about the West Coast. Too easy to want to transfer closer to home if things don’t go your way (which is always understandable for a kid) but the style of play is just so different – gimme the scrappers from Chicago or NY like your Davises or Quickleys, that physical play with a chip on your shoulder is what we need.

You guys celebrating Askew leaving are the same idiots complaining and one and done. No question that he didn’t live up to his billing as a freshman but that’s the type of kid you want to stick around and show improvement each season – exactly the type of kid you all complain we don’t have.

@Dave. Big difference between constructive criticism and downright bashing an 18 year old. He obviously wasn’t great this year and fans have a right to be frustrated. The no sense of commitment issue is also frustrating. But it’s the “don’t let the door hit ya” and “I’ll help you pack” comments that are pathetic coming from grown men.

If playing hard and being locked in were good enough my 55 year old fat azz would be out there on the team, but its not good enough and Askew is not good enough to play at Kentucky either. A point guard who cannot beat defenders off the dribble just is not good enough to play at Kentucky. Good luck Devin, it is ok not to be good enough.

It’s amazing you aren’t an NBA coach with skills like that. I bet you’d go through staff quickly and end up worse than you started. Maybe you’d figure that part out after 6 games though.

All of Louisville’s coaches thought he was good enough to play when he committed there first. All of Kentucky’s coaches did when he later committed to UK. It didn’t work out for the kid, the school, or the coaches. It’s unfortunate. He may or may not have improved much, but all I’m saying is I wished it would have worked out here. I’m not sure there’s much to gain by acting like a turd and badmouthing him. You think players and/or recruits don’t read comments? Nevermind Coach HighBallSuck, you got it all figured out!

Players leaving for whatever reason and the lack of continuity is the reason this team was so bad this past season. Askew played like a freshman. He will get progressively better and be a great college basketball player if he stays in school 3-4 more years. A 2nd year freshman Askew is going to be an asset to wherever he goes. Meanwhile we are right back in the same position. No experience at the position we need it most.

I wish him the best. It was pretty obvious that he bit off more than he could chew when he came out here last year.

Best of luck to Devin! I hope he continues to work and play hard wherever he goes!

Wow, almost 200 comments, overwhelmingly positive; there’s some good will he can take with him. He played hard, gave everything he had every play; many people noticed and appreciated that. He will succeed somewhere.

Yes I think he will too rg. We’re going to see him in a couple years and wonder how we let him get away…kinda like Juzang

To bad Cal put him in the spotlight so much. Wish him good luck but unlike most post on here glad to see him do this.

Kentucky is not for everyone. It became blatantly clear Askew did not possess the physical attributes to be successful at UK. Most of which you can’t teach, you either have them or you don’t. That doesn’t mean he cannot, or will not find success else where and I for one hope that he does. Just not a good fit for the individual, or the program.

He is an 18 year old kid, who to his defense, never ONCE said he was coming back! His DAD said so, but not the kid himself! He sees himself getting recruited over and wants to go play! I don’t blame him one bit!! I DO wish Cal would encourage players to stay and develop, but that’s NEVER gonna happen. If we were in Baylor’s shoes this morning, MOST of y’all would be talking out the other side of your mouth!!

Good luck to him. Perhaps he will get some quality coaching now.

He wasn’t a good fit. Cal hates it when they aren’t good enough to go pro after a year.
