Bluegrass Boys Knocked Out in First Round of The Basketball Tournament

The comeback tour didn’t last long for a group of former Kentucky players. The two-seeded Bluegrass Boys were knocked out of the first round at The Basketball Tournament by seven-seeded D2, 77-62.

Making up the Kentucky portion of the roster was Ramon Harris, Dominique Hawkins, Marcus Lee, and Kevon Galloway. But it was team D2 (uncoincidentally comprised of mostly former Divison II athletes) that came away with the game-winning shot to advance into the second round.

*Josh Harrellson and Derek Willis did not play despite being listed on the initial team roster*

The atmosphere – even for a 9 p.m. start time – was typical Big Blue Nation fashion, cheering on their former Cats until the bitter end.

Lee finished with 15 points and eight rebounds for the Bluegrass Boys while recent Norther Kentucky University graduate Drew McDonald added another 16 points and six rebounds for the blue and white.

The Kentucky boys might be out, but at least we still have DeMarcus Cousins (and Chris Lofton?).

We’ll have more from this game and more on Saturday during round two of The Basketball Tournament.

    Wow, very surprised and disappointed.

      Really? Like… You’re serious???

I’m going to file this in the ‘saw this coming from a mile away’ section.

Surprised that you think just because these guys say the bench at UK, that makes them a level above everyone else.

Ridge… I can appreciate your UK fandom and defending them until the death but this team was never going to win much. The talent isn’t there. They weren’t exactly a good team when they were at UK. I’ll cheer hard as hell for them to win next year but with the same team they won’t get out of the second round.

Cokely, I understand completely about our talent or lack of. Let me put it this way… look at who and where they were playing. I’m old, overweight, and lost a step but if I’m playing one on one against lesser talent and in my driveway around family… guess what, I’m favored.

Ehhh.. I’ve lost more than 1 step – like 5+

Hope they raised money. Instead of Trophy.

That was a pathetic, sloppy and sad showing. What bothered me the most, other than wasting my evening watching, was listening to Greenburg and company constantly referring to the UK alumni team. Four players that spent very little time on the floor while at Kentucky. Kevin Galloway was atrocious, surprise. No offense, no scorers, and apparently no ball handling skills. Let’s be real, all our alumni, can you call one and doners alumni, play some form of professional basketball. That was a team of Kentucky college players, four of them bench guys at UK. Hyped by this sight once again, out in the first round…again. First time as the one seed, this time the two. Let’s do UK a favor, and not associate them as a representative of UK basketball. We’ll form a real “alumni” team with our NBA players and create the second coming of the Dream Team and restore our reputation as the best tradition in basketball. Go Cats!

Dude, calm down. Current NBA players aren’t allowed to play in the tournament.

I’m guessing you wanted Kyle Macy to be the player/coach of this team?!

You are so right. Looked like a bunch of elementary players. Very sad. Couldn’t pass or shoot.

      Hyped by this site… yes.

Overall a bit crude. But I can’t say you’re wrong with any of it.

fen360, I’m aware NBA players can’t play. Sarcastic example to restore face after two years of embarrassment, like losing olympic gold and needing the Dream Team to restore American face.

Game winning shot? They won by 15?

They have a weird “Elam Ending”. After the first dead ball after the 4 minute mark. The winning team only needs to score 8 more points. Very strange, so technically it was a game winner bc of the rule. Nonetheless, it was a bad showing. They did the same last year. Players didn’t play in the first round and we lost.

They haven’t been able to put balanced teams together for this tournament unfortunately. They really needed more guards and overall offense.

Not surprised. Wasn’t exactly a Who’s Who of UK hoops alumni. Appreciate the effort boys !!

2 seed losing to a 7 seed playing in front of home fans isn’t surprising? Okay.

With the talent they amassed? No…

I’ll be honest. Every announcement they put together on this team, when they announced guys who were coming back, I told a few of my friends who read the site, “Uh. This team is gonna get throttled.” They all agreed. Who was going to score the ball?

Personally, I think all the guys were good guys. Skill wise? There was no offense.

You should have spouted your keen insight before the game. UK fans are extremely loyal. If you had talked trash with them you could have made a fortune. But, I guess you didn’t see that part coming.

    Shouldn’t have been a 2 seed apparently

Krebs seems like a real good dude. However it’s clear he doesn’t have the pull to put together a great team. He’s never going to have the pull a guy like DMC has. This result isn’t too surprising.
