Big Blue Bahamas Update: Jay Bilas Speaks with the Cats

“You have a chance to do something historic in this game this year.  Not good, not really good, you have the chance to make history.”

If the video is sending chills up my spine, I can’t imagine being in the room.  The Bilastrator spoke with Cal’s Cats to give them some unique perspective from his point of view.  Hopefully these lessons won’t be forgotten anytime soon.

Jay said pretty much all the right things. This talk could be one of the more important things that took place on this trip in the context of the entire season.

definetly agree with all the points he said.. but it is not a might or maybe about being the most disected team in america. we will be over analyzed after w’s after l’s everything

This was awesome, I love me some Jay Bilas. I hope fans were listening to this as well.. don’t worry about who’s getting minutes and who’s not! It’s not up to us, we just need to focus on wins and losses! Of course we all know UK fans turn into coaching “experts” as soon as the season starts so I’m sure someone out there will complain “Derek Willis needs to get in the dayum game! CAYTS!” You sir, are who Jay Bilas is talking about. Just stop.

Wow…that was awesome. I can imagine that being replayed sometime during the season. Could you imagine if a former UK player gave that speech to Duke? Bilas is one evolved human being.

The only difference is Duke fans don’t care about UK nearly as much as UK fans care about Duke.

I had the good fortune to talk with Jay Bilas at the USA Basketball Camp this year. He is a fine gentleman, a respected broadcast journalist and a fun guy to be around. He is honest in all his comments, but he certainly is not one of those who blasts the UK program solely because of his personal college basketball allegiance or bias. I told him in my estimation he is the UK fans’ favorite Dookie. He suggested that might not be such a high compliment, all things considered. I’m impressed he spoke to our team.

Very good speech. Hopefully he doesn’t tell people he got it from Coach K or something. 😉

Hmmm from Cal’s Fb (and prob Twitter too, haven’t been there yet) : When I get time to myself, you know I can’t help but think. Well, I’ve come up with one of my best ideas yet. It’s crazy, ridiculous. Hum diddy diddy. BUT, I’m not going to tell you until it’s ready to be executed. When I put it together, you’ll say, “That was the idea he was talking about.”

      Ideas for what Cal means:
      –Another tweak
–More motivational speakers to talk to the team a la Bilas (former players, coaches, media personalities — anyone who can remind them to work together and ignore the hype/haters)
–Some kind of JV team or way to get the guys more experience within the confines of the rules
–Yet another significant tourney a la Champions Classic and others
–A new flavor of ice cream

I’m no conspiracy theorist but if you listen to that speech backwards it sounds like: “Miss it. Miss it. Misssss the shot. Miiiiis the shot. Miiiiisss it. Miss it.” Wonder what that means?

Excellent! In many ways he was restating what Cal had said earlier about ignoring the “sabotage”. I’m glad that this was recorded so that fans can see it as well. It not only gives us all another chance to see what a stand up guy Jay Bilas is (I love the way he calls out the NCAA), but also to be reminded that the media gets paid to overanalyze teams like UK. It sells papers and magazines, drives up ratings and leads to more hits on websites. When stories aren’t there, stories will be “created”. Too many fans get sucked in as well, either to defend the team against a “non-story” or to join the media in criticizing the team or coach. Sabotage!

Good talk and a great reminder!

Words of wisdom that should go a long way for these young men. They truly hold their destiny in their own hands. I am so very glad I got on the list for Final Four tickets the day after the Twins said they were returning! See you in Indy errrbody!

One dukie you have to respect . I’m sure it will be played again for the team during the season, but more importantly the fans need to here it . KSR can do a REMEMBER THIS post every couple of weeks for all the ” experts ” to replay . The man is telling everyone what will happen and why . But hey this is the BBN and how easily we forget.

Thats awesome they were able to get Julius Randle in there to hold the sound boom too. I love how the former Cats embrace the program.

Three things I got from that. 1) He admits what no other sports ‘expert/analyst’ will admit. They really don’t know. 2) People need to get beyond his ‘Dookieness’ or what ever. He has moved well beyond that. He is intelligent, articulate, honest and is willing to say the truth even when it’s unpopular or it’s going to rub some people the wrong way. 3) That was a great message, I hope the kids take it to heart. I think the veterans understand what he was trying to tell them, it’s just a matter of laying down expectations for the freshman.
    GO CATS!

Wow….that is some heady stuff for these young guys. Great message and I hope they take it to heart. I wonder if Jay offered or if Cal asked him to talk to the team? Either way, brilliant. Bilas is the best. (and I never noticed what nice eyes he has).

hoping after this year that this UK team is considered the best ever assembled…my guess is that’s a tall order, but attainable…excited for the season to begin…and with good football too…oh my, what a time to be a UK fan…

Matt Jones: Please don’t post any more pieces that make Dookies look smart and likable. Life wouldn’t be as interesting if we found out they are all that way.
