Most fans said their goodbyes to Big Bertha on Alex Poythress day back in March, but a select few will get to see it one more time during UK’s commencement ceremonies in two weeks on May 8.
After being a part of the UK basketball tradition for almost 40 years, it will be different walking into Rupp next season and Big Bertha not be there.
Next season, a new fancy schmancy scoreboard will loom over the court. According to the Herald-Leader’s Beth Musgrave, the scoreboard will be a part of the $15 million upgrade to Rupp Arena.
“The new scoreboard will be 27 feet tall and 34 feet wide. It will have viewing screens on four sides and will weigh 43,524 pounds. It will be delivered in September and will be ready in early October before the UK men’s basketball season.
The new LED screens will give the arena more advertising real estate, said Bill Owen, president and CEO of Lexington Center Corp., which oversees Rupp Arena.
“It also gives us more opportunity to directly engage the fans,” Owen said. “It really adds excitement to an event.”
