Big Bertha will make its final appearance for UK’s graduation

Most fans said their goodbyes to Big Bertha on Alex Poythress day back in March, but a select few will get to see it one more time during UK’s commencement ceremonies in two weeks on May 8.

After being a part of the UK basketball tradition for almost 40 years, it will be different walking into Rupp next season and Big Bertha not be there.

Next season, a new fancy schmancy scoreboard will loom over the court. According to the Herald-Leader’s Beth Musgrave, the scoreboard will be a part of the $15 million upgrade to Rupp Arena.

“The new scoreboard will be 27 feet tall and 34 feet wide. It will have viewing screens on four sides and will weigh 43,524 pounds. It will be delivered in September and will be ready in early October before the UK men’s basketball season.

The new LED screens will give the arena more advertising real estate, said Bill Owen, president and CEO of Lexington Center Corp., which oversees Rupp Arena.

“It also gives us more opportunity to directly engage the fans,” Owen said. “It really adds excitement to an event.”

Farewell, Big Bertha.
*also don’t Google Big Bertha without adding Rupp at the end of it.

They need to sell parts of it. It would be a cool thing to have for a man cave.

Why so small? I want a BIG Scoreboard like they have in Quicken Loans Arena for the Cavs. We are Kentucky….we deserve better than this puny thing they are installing.

Agreed. Just build a damn on campus arena by the football field already! Plenty of parking plus the school can use it for all types of things and easily make their money back.

My first time in Rupp as a student, I expected better than that in the center of the court, and that was ’02. I’m glad it’s gone – it’s not a good look, especially if Lexington is going to continue to bid to host NCAA tournament games.
